The 22nd Bienal de Sevilla will host 68 shows and 28 premieres
The Bienal de Sevilla will be opened with a speech by Laura Garcia Lorca, along with the delivery of the ‘Giraldillo Internacional de Flamenco Ciudad de Sevilla’. The program will end with its final show in the Port of Seville. Tickets are available from May 25th.
The 22nd Bienal de Flamenco was presented on the morning of Tuesday 24th of May at the Teatro Lope de Vega, a scenic space with ties to the Bienal since its origin. The mayor of Seville, Antonio Muñoz, commented that he was delighted to be able to present “a Bienal full of great events that blend a variety of classic artists who cannot be missed”. Muñoz described Seville as “a city dedicated to flamenco that will once again capture everyone’s attention to show a living and constantly evolving art through the hallmark of our land, the very best flamenco”.
The 22nd Bienal de Flamenco will be held from September the 8th to October 1st. Every two years since 1980, the city of Seville has been transformed into an open stage to present the most current flamenco productions. 68 different events will take place over 24 days, including the delivery of the prize ‘Giraldillo Internacional de Flamenco Ciudad de Sevilla’, which for the first time will have an economic endowment consisting of €10,000 in cash. The judges awarding the ‘Giraldillo’ will be made up of representatives of the institutions that collaborate with the Bienal: El Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y la Música (INAEM) del Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte; la Junta de Andalucía, along with la Consejería de Cultura, and the Diputación de Sevilla. The winning artist will collect the award on September the 8th in a ceremony that the organization is currently developing.
Coinciding with the celebration of 100 years of ‘Cante Jondo’, a singing contest from Granada in 1922, the Bienal de Flamenco has invited Laura García Lorca to deliver the opening speech of the 22nd Bienal de Flamenco. Laura is the niece of Federico García Lorca and has been the president of the Federico García Lorca Foundation since 2005. Along with Federico, many others attended the event 1922, including composers such as Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Turina, as well as poets like Juan Ramón Jiménez to painters such as Manuel Ángeles Ortiz. Protagonists also included bullfighters such as Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, all of which have now gone down in history as inspirational figures. They were guided by ‘Cante Jondo’ masters such as Pastora Pavón, Antonio Chacón and Manuel Torre. On June 13th and 14th of this year, we will witness a celebration and milestone of Andalusian culture, bringing together modernity, along with the great intellectuals of today, as well as a cultural event related to the flamenco world, a contest of ‘Cante Jondo’.
«The program of the 22nd Bienal de Flamenco will offer 28 premieres. Among them, will be world premieres by Eva Yerbabuena, Olga Pericet, María Terremoto, La Tremendita, Marina Heredia, Accademia del Piacere and Dani de Morón, María Moreno, Rafaela Carrasco, Pastora Galván or Marco Vargas and Chloé Brûlé»
In the words of the director of the Bienal, Chema Blanco, “it was essential that a real effort be made to turn the Bienal de Flamenco into the most important event and space in the city with regards to its freedom of creation, which was also equally important when considering the programming. The Bienal must be a free space for creation”. The program will consist of more than 60 shows that will take place in nine different scenic spaces in the 24 days of continuous celebration: Real Alcázar, Teatro de la Maestranza, Teatro Lope de Vega, Teatro Alameda, Espacio Turina, Central Theatre, Hotel Triana, Church San Luis de los Franceses, Factoría Cultural, and the Port of Seville.
Another feature of the program has been its collaboration with other shows, institutions, and flamenco festivals. This has been seen in the support and sponsorship of major events such as the Festival Flamenco de Madrid, the Festival Flamenco Mont de Marsan, the Festival de Biarritz, the Villa de Paris Theatre, the Bienal de Venecia, the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada, as well as the Condeduque Center for Contemporary Culture, the Canal Theatre, the Nimes Theatre, or the Grec in Barcelona, among many others. The director of the Biennale wanted to “reach out to other directors and cultural shows to value and recognize them”. In addition, he spoke on his commitment to ensuring “new ways of presenting shows and creative processes, thus overcoming the idea of a genre separate from the rest of the artistic practices which converge in what we call contemporary. The Bienal must provide a contemporary vision of flamenco, honour the heritage and respect it. It is a way of enriching this mark of identity from knowledge, from other perspectives and from other prisms. It’s a way of freeing up flamenco, opening the door to new ways of understanding the art, whilst maintaining the most absolute respect for this tradition”.
The programming of the 22nd Bienal is as extensive as it is varied. Among the performances will be what has been called Guitarra Desnuda ‘Naked Guitar’, which will be in the Espacio Turina. Moreover, On Friday nights there will be a ‘magic hour’ in the Alameda, consisting of open conversations with other disciplines. In addition, there will be a morning program that will take place in room B of Teatro Central. And not to be missed, is the singer Gratia Plena, who will perform on three Sundays in September. These performances will take place at 12 o’clock in the San Luis de los Franceses church. There will also be sponsorship of talent at Factoría Cultural del Polígono Sur in the disciplines of singing, dancing, and playing, where well-known figures will accompany the artistic premiere of three young people. The Hotel Triana is reserved for the Territorios.
«The 22nd Bienal de Flamenco will be held from September the 8th to October 1st. Every two years since 1980, the city of Seville has been transformed into an open stage to present the most current flamenco productions»
The closing show cannot be forgotten and will be performed in the Port of Seville. It is the ideal place, the market of the Port, to develop a flamenco show mixed with other musical disciplines. This concert has been created with the artistic coordination of the Alhambra Monkey Week Festival and the collaboration of the Autoridad Portuaria de Sevilla.
The program of the 22nd Bienal de Flamenco will offer 28 world premieres. Among them, there will be world premieres of Eva Yerbabuena, Olga Pericet, María Terremoto, La Tremendita, Marina Heredia, Accademia del Piacere and Dani de Morón, María Moreno, Rafaela Carrasco, Pastora Galván, Marco Vargas and Chloé Brûlé. There will be five major co-productions with premieres in Seville. They will be signed by artists of the stature of Patricia Guerrero, David Coria, Ana Morales, Israel Galván and Rocío Molina. Along with the official program, there will also be other similar exhibitions, literacy readings and cinematic projects.
Tickets go on sale on the 25th of May. They can be purchased at the box office of the Teatro Lope de Vega from the 25th to the 31st of May and from the 1st of September at the Centro Cerámica Triana, and from the venue of the Bienal de Flamenco in the months of June, July, and August.
