Seville’s City Council, through the Urban Habitat, Culture and Tourism Delegation, which oversees the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, will keep the original dates for the 21^st edition of this international flamenco festival, to be held between September 4^th and October 4^th, 2020. Thus, the Bienal, according to the current prognosis, is sticking to its initial schedule, despite the changes to the city’s cultural agenda prompted by the state of emergency declared by the COVID-19 health crisis. As in its previous editions, the festival will offer a rich, extensive and diverse program coordinated by Antonio Zoido which will include both seasoned, renowned flamenco stars and emerging artists who will have an opportunity to showcase their talent before a national and international audience.

The Urban Habitat, Culture and Tourism delegate, Antonio Muñoz, highlighted the importance of the Bienal as part of the city’s identity, not just due to the high artistic quality showcased year after year, but also due to the national and international renown that makes this event a first-rate promoter of Seville’s culture and tourism. In these troubled times, the festival could also become a key piece in reactivating the city after the current state of emergency is over. “Culture, and the Bienal as one of its leading exponents, is part of the identity of our city, which is being hit hard by the serious health crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of the municipality is to make all efforts to enable businesses, cultural agents and artists to recover from the consequences of this pandemic as soon as possible. In order to achieve this, it’s essential to keep prioritizing the Bienal de Flamenco in the re-programing of the city’s cultural events”, explained Antonio Muñoz, who also pointed out that the flamenco artists taking part in the Bienal are a key element in the promotion of Seville, Andalusia and Spain and the festival is also vital for supporting and showcasing the artists’ work on stage.

“The flamenco artists and art companies involved with the Bienal need this festival for material and emotional reasons as a launching pad for their creations. Thus, from Seville’s City Council we want to announce that, despite the uncertain outlook of the health crisis we’re currently experiencing, the Bienal is planning to celebrate its 21^st edition as scheduled”, continued Muñoz. The program of the 2020 edition includes over 70 shows, 20 of which will be world premieres.
