April at Los Gallos, Seville’s first tablao

The oldest tablao in Seville features three bailaores awarded the ‘Premio Nacional de Córdoba’ and two prized by the ‘Festival de La Unión’. The formula: traditional, non-commercial flamenco. Here’s their April program

ExpoFlamenco presents Seville’s Tablao Los Gallos April 2019 program. This is the oldest tablao in the capital of Andalusia, having been opened in 1966 by José Luis Núñez de Prado, from Madrid, married to a catalana from Puigcerdá. Nowadays it’s their younger daughter Blanca Núñez de Prado who has been leasing this venue for years.

Two daily hour-and-a-half shows are performed at Los Gallos, featuring a ten-people ensemble (‘cuadro’). The 35-euro admission includes basic food and drinks. The lineup this month is the following:

Cante: Juan MurubeNiño de Gines and Juan de la María

Guitar: David CaroJesús Rodríguez and José Pérez

Baile: Rosario Toledo (twice awarded Córdoba’s Premio Nacional de Baile), Rafael Campallo (awarded El Desplante prize of baile at the Festival de la Unión), Mercedes de Córdoba (awarded the Premio Giraldillo al Baile at Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco and twice awarded Córdoba’s Premio Nacional de Baile), Soraya Clavijo (awarded Córdoba’s Premio Nacional de Baile), Mónica Iglesias (awarded El Desplante prize of baile at the Festival de la Unión), Paula ComitreGloria del Rosario and Sara Jiménez.

During the fifty-two years it has been opened, this tablao has featured the best artists of its day, from cantaores such as Antonio Mairena, Chocolate, Naranjito de Triana, Juan Peña el Lebrijano, Perla de Cádiz and Paquera de Jerez to great masters of baile such as Farruco, Enrique el Cojo, Matilde Coral, Rafael el Negro, Merche Esmeralda, Pepa Montes and Cristina Hoyos. The formula has always been the same: traditional, non-commercial flamenco

Tablao Los Gallos is located at 11 Santa Cruz square in Seville, in the heart of the iconic Santa Cruz district. The two daily shows take place at 8:30 PM and 10:30 PM, from Monday to Sunday.
