The 2019 edition of the Goya Awards (Spain’s film awards) featured several artists and performances. One of the most popular ones was Rosalía’s cover of Me Quedo Contigo, made popular in the 1970s by the Gypsy rumba group Los Chunguitos.
The artist from Barcelona opened her performance dressed in red, having the Cor Jove de l’Orfeó Català, a renowned choir from Catalunya, accompanying her in the background. It was an intimate staging for a song that was part of the soundtrack of Carlos Saura’s 1981 movie Deprisa, deprisa.
Rosalía’s version of Me quedo contigo was arranged by Bernat Vivancos, who opted for a more mystical composition, instead of keeping the original romantic-pop feel.
Los Chunguitos reacted positively to the performance of this singer from San Esteban de Sasroviras. “There’s no better way to make it so beautiful. From now on we’re also your fans, Rosalía. We’d like to sing it together, Rosalía & Chunguitos”, stated the artists from Extremadura in their Twitter official profile. There have been other artists such as Antonio Vega and Manu Chao who have also covered Me quedo contigo, although never achieving the same level of success as Rosalía’s version. The song’s official video in YouTube has gathered over a million and a half views in only two days.
