La XXIII Biennial of Flamenco is already entering its final stretch. An edition that will be closed on Saturday 5th at the Teatro de la Maestranza (20.30 pm) with the world premiere of the latest work by the dancer and choreographer Israel Galvan, Carmen. With sold-out seats, in this proposal the artist puts his personal stamp on the opera Georges Bizet, putting the emphasis on the jondo and in the exotic, and counting on the participation of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, three lyrical voices, one flamenco and the peculiar Finnish choir of male voices Oulu city.
Galván, recognized, among other awards, with the 2005 National Dance Award in the Creation category, comes to La Bienal to put the finishing touch to 25 days of flamenco in all its expressions. And it does so with its particular vision of Carmen, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Bizet's work. A programme co-produced by his company with the Teatro de la Maestranza and La Bienal, in which Les Nuits de Fourvière – Festival International de la Métropole de Lyon also participates in collaboration with the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM).
As highlighted by the Director General of Culture of the City Council of Seville, Fernando Mañes“Expectations are high for this culmination, which comes from Israel Galván, one of the most international artists from Seville, and the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra. Without a doubt, it will be a magnificent end to an edition that has left us with historic nights and unrepeatable moments.”
As he already did with El amor brujo of Manuel de Falla and Spring consecration From Igor Stravinsky's work, Galván approaches another masterpiece, the one that has as its protagonist this Sevillian archetype created in France by Prosper Merimée, author of the novel of the same name, and later set to music by Bizet. And he does so by going to the essence of Carmen, defining her love story through the three main characters, three lyrical voices to which he entrusts the musicality of the piece (Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Jose Bros and Angel Odena) and to which is added that of the flamenco singer Maria Marin.
With these elements and the musical direction Maria Itkonen, Galván recreates the opera in dance form and supports the voices and choreography in the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville, while adding a fresh and innovative element from the Finnish male voice choir Huutajat Oulu, directed by Petri Sirvio.
