Chac\u00f3n era diez u once a\u00f1os m\u00e1s viejo que Manuel y cuando Torres lleg\u00f3 a Sevilla, a principios del siglo XX, don Antonio era ya una figura y al ni\u00f1o de <strong>Juan Soto<\/strong> y <strong>Tomasa Loreto<\/strong> no se le conoc\u00eda en la capital andaluza, solo en C\u00e1diz y Jerez. S\u00e9 que Chac\u00f3n ayud\u00f3 a Manuel a introducirse en el ambiente flamenco de Sevilla y que apost\u00f3 siempre por \u00e9l.<\/p>\n<p>Pero una noche, en 1908, seg\u00fan me cont\u00f3 un descendiente de<strong> Juan de Dios Dom\u00ednguez Jim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, director del <strong>Caf\u00e9 Filarm\u00f3nico de Sevilla<\/strong> \u2013hijo de <strong>El Isle\u00f1o<\/strong>\u2013, le ri\u00f1\u00f3 en p\u00fablico porque no echaba cuenta del cante, nada m\u00e1s que de las peleas de gallos. El Majareta, que as\u00ed conoc\u00edan a Torres en Sevilla, ten\u00eda cuatro o cinco gallos de categor\u00eda a los que llevaba al <strong>Caf\u00e9 Novedades<\/strong> para las ri\u00f1as, donde se mov\u00eda mucho dinero. El popular<strong> Juan Dulce<\/strong> era uno de los organizadores de aquellas peleas domingueras en el popular sal\u00f3n de la Campana.<\/p>\n<p>Aquella bronca de Chac\u00f3n a Manuel trajo cola, llegando el eco incluso a Jerez, donde no se tomaron muy bien la reprimenda del maestro al joven cantaor gitano. A pesar de la mutua admiraci\u00f3n y de la diferencia de edad, exist\u00eda una rivalidad entre los dos. Y una noche, en una fiesta celebrada en la casa del torero <strong>Fuentes<\/strong>, se picaron ambos cantaores y me cont\u00f3 esta persona, un nieto de <strong>Juan de Dios<\/strong>, que casi llegaron a las manos. Gracias a Fuentes y a <strong>Javier Molina<\/strong>, que les toc\u00f3 la guitarra a los dos, no lleg\u00f3 la sangre al r\u00edo.<\/p>\n<p>Estuvieron unos meses sin mirarse a la cara, hasta que una noche en la que Manuel cantaba en Madrid, Chac\u00f3n fue a escucharlo y, emocionado, le tir\u00f3 el sombrero al escenario, dici\u00e9ndole: \u201c\u00a1Viva el n\u00famero uno del cante!\u201d. Torres recogi\u00f3 el sombrero y le devolvi\u00f3 la lisonja de esta manera: \u201cY de las ri\u00f1as de gallos, don Antonio\u201d.
