El tenor canario era un enamorado del cante flamenco, como lo fueron <strong>Gayarre<\/strong> o <strong>Fleta<\/strong>, admiradores de <strong>Chac\u00f3n<\/strong> y <strong>Vallejo<\/strong>, respectivamente. A Alfredo le asombraba de Enrique que sacara a veces los registros que sacaba tras estar mudo y harto de copas y tabaco. \u201cEs algo milagroso \u2013me dijo\u2013, porque yo para estar al cien por cien no puedo ni beber agua antes de una actuaci\u00f3n\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Comprob\u00e9 eso m\u00e1s de una vez, c\u00f3mo Enrique estaba mudo en un concierto, pero en la segunda parte sacaba una voz incre\u00edble. \u00c9l conoc\u00eda su voz muy bien, que es algo fundamental. <strong>Pastora<\/strong> se quedaba muda, se limpiaba la boca con un pa\u00f1uelo y era capaz de cantar una grana\u00edna. Hay un cantaor joven de buena escuela, al que ya ponen de genio, que tiene graves problemas de voz porque no conoce bien su registro. Por tanto, tendr\u00e1 problemas a lo largo de su carrera, si ya los tiene, siendo tan insultantemente joven.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00abLos cantaores son genios, todos, porque sin educaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica ninguna, solo la flamenca, la natural, son capaces de tirar un tono por el aire y recogerlo con una habilidad innata incre\u00edble\u00bb (Alfredo Kraus)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Enrique Morente tuvo tambi\u00e9n algunos problemas de voz, tantos que se plante\u00f3 dejar el cante y poner un negocio en Sierra Nevada, un tablao. Eso se le pod\u00eda ocurrir solo al maestro. Pero fue corrigiendo su afon\u00eda y la convirti\u00f3 en una cualidad para sus muchos seguidores. Kraus me dijo que ten\u00eda unos recursos de voz incre\u00edbles, capaz de pasar de una octava alta a una baja sin despeinarse. Pero se asombraba de ver c\u00f3mo se castigaba la garganta con alcohol y tabaco, encerrado en un s\u00f3tano sin apenas ventilaci\u00f3n, como <strong>El Candela<\/strong>. \u201cLos cantaores son genios, todos, porque sin educaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica ninguna, solo la flamenca, la natural, son capaces de tirar un tono por el aire y recogerlo con una habilidad innata incre\u00edble\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Enrique, adem\u00e1s, lo mismo se fumaba un cigarro rubio o negro que se beb\u00eda un cubata o un mosto de Umbrete, le daba igual. Lo vi a veces fumarse un puro como un pepino, aunque de los buenos, y al rato empalmaba ducados como un condenado. Le met\u00eda mano a todo lo que ardiera. Y ten\u00eda una hernia de hiato desde joven, que al final desemboc\u00f3 en algo m\u00e1s serio, caus\u00e1ndole la muerte. Pero le daba igual, no pod\u00eda alternar sin beber y fumar, aunque jam\u00e1s le vi borracho. No hab\u00eda manera de tumbarlo. Creo que en eso se parec\u00eda tambi\u00e9n a su maestro <strong>Matrona<\/strong>, que se llevaba tres d\u00edas de borrachera y cuando ya no pod\u00eda m\u00e1s, dec\u00eda: \u201cLlevadme al garaje\u201d. O sea, a casa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Don Alfredo me dijo tambi\u00e9n que era capaz de adivinar cu\u00e1ndo un cantaor fing\u00eda estar enduendado. \u00abSon unos actores magn\u00edficos, me quedo turulato. Un cantaor de Barcelona me pidi\u00f3 una noche m\u00e1s dinero si quer\u00eda cante con duende. Le dije que no y cant\u00f3 para matarlo. Me chantaje\u00f3 con el duende\u201d, me dijo el gran tenor, entre carcajadas.
