La \u00faltima semana de junio, 2019, el flamenco perdi\u00f3 a un buen amigo. Brook\u00a0Zern<\/strong>, un hombre tan humilde y discreto que a menudo fue descartado como un guiri<\/em> m\u00e1s, aquella palabra despectiva que se aplica al extranjero que no acaba de comprender las maneras espa\u00f1olas.<\/p>\n

All\u00e1 por el 1944, el padre de Brook fue uno de los primeros aficionados a la guitarra flamenca fuera de Espa\u00f1a, e inspir\u00f3 el inter\u00e9s de su hijo en este g\u00e9nero. Zern hijo dedic\u00f3 su vida entera al estudio, apreciaci\u00f3n y conservaci\u00f3n del flamenco, siempre sin \u00e1nimo de lucro.<\/p>\n

Sus logros en cuanto al flamenco han sido muchos y variados.\u00a0En los a\u00f1os setenta, despu\u00e9s de una larga estancia en Sevilla, fund\u00f3 en Nueva York el Flamenco Center USA. En 1972, su art\u00edculo Flamenco for the Purist, it\u2019s a Ritual, not a Spectacle<\/em> publicado en el New York Times recibi\u00f3 el Premio Meli\u00e1 al periodismo concedido por Jos\u00e9 M\u00aa Pem\u00e1n<\/strong>. En 2004, a instancias de Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo<\/strong>, redact\u00f3 la petici\u00f3n estadounidense a la Unesco para que el flamenco fuese declarado Patrimonio Cultural, y en 2014 promocion\u00f3 la emisi\u00f3n de un sello de correos para conmemorar a Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/strong> que falleci\u00f3 en febrero de aquel a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

Escribi\u00f3 acerca de los guitarristas Javier Molina, Diego del Gastor, Carlos Montoya<\/strong> y Mario Escudero<\/strong> para la web DeFlamenco.com<\/em>, adem\u00e1s de docenas de art\u00edculos citados en libros destacados de expertos como \u00c1ngel \u00c1lvarez Caballero<\/strong> o Juan Jos\u00e9 T\u00e9llez<\/strong>, entre otros, y aport\u00f3 incontables ensayos a una variedad de publicaciones especializadas. Tambi\u00e9n hablaba de flamenco en m\u00e1s de cien programas de radio, y algunos de televisi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Zern dio numerosas charlas y conferencias acerca del flamenco en instituciones y eventos como el Festival Flamenco de Albuquerque, Universidad de Harvard, City University of New York, Columbia University y el New School, entre otros, y su Discograf\u00eda Flamenca Internacional: 1950-2003\u00a0<\/em>es posiblemente el registro m\u00e1s completo de esta naturaleza, con m\u00e1s de 3000 p\u00e1ginas.<\/p>\n

Otro logro importante fue su papel en la presentaci\u00f3n y aceptaci\u00f3n en Nueva York del cantaor Manuel Agujetas<\/strong>, en una \u00e9poca en la que una voz tan cruda no se hab\u00eda escuchado en esta capital cultural.<\/p>\n

Con la ayuda de la Smithsonian Institution<\/a>, Zern pudo localizar grabaciones anteriormente desconocidas de la d\u00e9cada de los 1940 de un joven Sabicas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

La admiraci\u00f3n que sent\u00eda Brook Zern por el flamenco tradicional le hizo comprometerse con la preservaci\u00f3n de material documental, m\u00e1s notablemente la serie Rito y Geograf\u00eda del Cante<\/em>, la obra maestra de Jos\u00e9 M\u00aa Vel\u00e1zquez-Gaztelu<\/strong>. Durante quince a\u00f1os Zern luch\u00f3 para conseguir la adquisici\u00f3n de la primera copia de la serie para la Flamenco Collection que se estableci\u00f3 en la Universidad de Columbia.\u00a0Un proyecto similar financiado por Zern logr\u00f3 conservar las grabaciones originales de la serie Flamenco<\/em>\u00a0de Fernando Qui\u00f1ones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

En reconocimiento de su enorme aportaci\u00f3n a la protecci\u00f3n y difusi\u00f3n del flamenco, que Brook Zern describi\u00f3 como \u00abuna de las creaciones m\u00e1s grandes y poderosas del mundo\u00bb, en 2008 el Rey don Juan Carlos de Espa\u00f1a<\/strong> le otorg\u00f3 la Cruz de Oficial de La Orden de Isabel la Cat\u00f3lica.<\/p>\n
