Ya saben mi edad. Aunque en realidad empez\u00f3 mucho antes, de ni\u00f1o, en Palomares del R\u00edo, donde escuchaba cantar a mi madre aquellas milongas de la posguerra mientras lavaba en el lebrillo del corral. Y donde me quedaba absorto oyendo a los viejos en las tabernas, con aquellas voces quemadas por el vino pele\u00f3n que eran capaces de emocionarme con sus historias. Pero a los 17 a\u00f1os me fui a vivir a una barriada de Sevilla, Su Eminencia, donde se fund\u00f3 la <strong>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca El Chozas<\/strong>, que a\u00fan existe. Y ah\u00ed comenz\u00f3 todo. De noche, mientras intentaba dormir, escuchaba a los aficionados cantar en esta pe\u00f1a y algo me llamaba. Me levantaba de la cama, me vest\u00eda y entraba en el local para comprobar qu\u00e9 era eso que me presionaba el pecho y que me hac\u00eda pensar en cosas que jam\u00e1s hab\u00eda pensado. Que me emocionaba hasta l\u00edmites que desconoc\u00eda hasta ese momento.<\/p>\n<p>El primer cantaor al que comenc\u00e9 a seguir fue precisamente <strong>El Chozas<\/strong>, el titular de la pe\u00f1a, que no tiene nada que ver con <strong>El Chozas de Lebrija<\/strong>. Era un nuevo cantaor del sevillano barrio de Los Carteros que acababa de grabar su primer disco, mi primer elep\u00e9. M\u00e1s tarde vi en esta pe\u00f1a a cantaores como <strong>Antonio Mairena<\/strong> y su hermano <strong>Manuel, Naranjito de Triana, Luis Caballero, Lebrijano, Ni\u00f1o de Fregenal, el Gordito de Triana<\/strong> o <strong>Cepero de Cantillana<\/strong>, entre otros muchos. Entre todos me metieron dentro el cante y quise ser cantaor, aunque lo dej\u00e9 porque todo era darme la entrada una guitarra y sudar como un pollo en una era. No val\u00eda para cantar delante del p\u00fablico. Una noche lo hice en la Pe\u00f1a Flamenca del Cerro del \u00c1guila, en Sevilla, en un concurso, con los ojos cerrados, y cuando los abr\u00ed se hab\u00eda ido la mayor parte del p\u00fablico. Fue entonces cuando decid\u00ed, con 20 a\u00f1os, que ten\u00eda que ser cr\u00edtico de flamenco. De eso hace ya treinta y siete y aqu\u00ed estamos, con doce libros escritos y miles de cr\u00edticas hechas en teatros y festivales de medio mundo. Podr\u00eda decir que con la misma ilusi\u00f3n que el primer d\u00eda, que queda siempre muy bien, pero la verdad es que estoy un poco cansado. A veces reflexiono y llego a la conclusi\u00f3n de que no tiene sentido esto de escribir sobre un arte tan complejo, tan dif\u00edcil, pero pongo un disco de <strong>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/strong> o <strong>Manuel Vallejo<\/strong> y le veo todo el sentido del mundo. No podr\u00eda vivir sin escribir de flamenco, porque adem\u00e1s lo convert\u00ed en mi profesi\u00f3n. Soy de los pocos cr\u00edticos profesionales que viven de esto exclusivamente, de escribir, en un pa\u00eds, Espa\u00f1a, donde escribir es llorar.<\/p>\n<p>Toda mi vida gira en torno al flamenco: me levanto cada ma\u00f1ana pensando en qu\u00e9 voy escribir o qu\u00e9 voy a escuchar. Y me acuesto repasando todo lo hecho a lo largo del d\u00eda, sin poder conciliar el sue\u00f1o, con el comp\u00e1s metido en la cabeza y los versos de una sole\u00e1 invit\u00e1ndome a cantar con sentimiento. El flamenco te atrapa y ya no te suelta jam\u00e1s. Y te mueres con \u00e9l metido en las entra\u00f1as. Y te vas de este mundo, supongo, pensando en que te perder\u00e1s a ese genio del cante, del baile o del toque, que est\u00e1 a\u00fan por nacer. Siento haberos aburrido hoy con esta efem\u00e9ride, en vez de haber tocado alg\u00fan tema de actualidad, pero necesitaba compartir con vosotros el sentimiento de llevar cuatro d\u00e9cadas ligado a un arte que me cambi\u00f3 totalmente la vida y que me ha permitido conocer a genios como Valderrama, Mairena, Sabicas, Morente, Camar\u00f3n, Farruco, Paco de Luc\u00eda o Manolo Sanl\u00facar. Es un privilegio que no s\u00e9 muy bien si merezco, pero que agradezco con toda el alma.
