No por esperada es menos dolorosa esta noticia. Lo digo porque llegu\u00e9 a tratarlo en Sevilla y era uno de esos cantaores que nunca te dejaban indiferente. Y ha muerto totalmente olvidado, como tantos otros. Gabriel no fue un hombre con suerte y no es porque no cantara bien, que fue una figura importante y con sello propio, sino porque la suerte no quiso estar nunca de su parte. Era hijo de <strong>La Carlotica<\/strong>\u00a0y naci\u00f3 en Linares en abril de 1941. Ten\u00eda 77 a\u00f1os y estaba ya retirado desde hac\u00eda a\u00f1os por sus continuas depresiones y un desencanto general. La \u00faltima vez que almorzamos juntos fue en Sevilla en compa\u00f1\u00eda de <strong>Juan Valderrama, Naranjito de Triana<\/strong> y <strong>Juan Antonio Valderrama<\/strong>. De eso hace muchos a\u00f1os y se sent\u00eda ya apartado de los escenarios antes de decidirlo. \u201cEsto se va\u201d, dec\u00eda con amargura este genial cantaor que presum\u00eda de haber tenido como referencias principales a Pastora y Tom\u00e1s, Marchena y Valderrama. Ah\u00ed queda eso. Lo ve\u00edas por la calle y sab\u00edas que era artista flamenco a dos kil\u00f3metros, porque era un hombre elegante, siempre vestido de manera impecable, cantara ese d\u00eda o no. Enseguida lo ibas a ver en un bar con un ch\u00e1ndal o en bermudas. Y hablaba de sus maestros como si lo hiciera de Dios, sin criticar nada de ellos, sino todo lo contario: los elogiaba constantemente. Como cantaor se colocaba \u00e9l mismo en la <strong>Casa de los Pav\u00f3n<\/strong>. O sea, de Pastora y Tom\u00e1s, sobre todo de Pastora. A ella le cantaba aquella letra por buler\u00edas que dec\u00eda:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Como cant\u00f3 Pastora<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>nadie ha cantao, nadie ha cantao, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>gitanos y flamencos la hemos llorao.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Como su familia se traslad\u00f3 a M\u00e1laga, se le tuvo por malague\u00f1o y all\u00ed comenz\u00f3 a cantar como profesional siendo un ni\u00f1o todav\u00eda. Emigr\u00f3 pronto de M\u00e1laga para irse a Norteam\u00e9rica, y luego lleg\u00f3 su etapa de cantaor de cuadro en los mejores tablaos de la capital de Espa\u00f1a, donde trabaj\u00f3 mucho con el guitarrista madrile\u00f1o <strong>Serranito<\/strong> y con la bailaora navarra <strong>Lucero Tena<\/strong>, la reina de las casta\u00f1uelas. El tablao era su escenario favorito, aunque cant\u00f3 mucho en teatros de todo el mundo, siendo de los primeros que lo hizo en Mosc\u00fa.<\/p>\n<p>Cantaor largo, destac\u00f3 en los estilos de su tierra, Linares, pero era un colosal int\u00e9rprete de los tangos y se defendi\u00f3 siempre muy bien en solares seguiriyas, ton\u00e1s y fandangos, con un estilo suyo muy dif\u00edcil de interpretar, de ah\u00ed que no vaya en el repertorio de los cantaores actuales. Un cantaor de los pies a la cabeza y, sobre todo, un artista que sab\u00eda estar en un escenario. Una gran p\u00e9rdida, sin duda, porque no quedan ya apenas cantaores de su generaci\u00f3n.
