Chac\u00f3n was ten or eleven years older than Torres, and when the latter arrived in Seville in the beginning of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, Antonio was already a renowned star, while the son of\u00a0<strong>Juan Soto<\/strong> and <strong>Tomasa Loreto<\/strong> was an unknown in capital of Andalusia, having only achieved some fame in C\u00e1diz and Jerez by then. I know that Chac\u00f3n helped to introduce Manuel in Seville\u2019s flamenco scene and he always supported him.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, one evening in 1908, according to story told to me by a descendant of <strong>Juan de Dios Dom\u00ednguez Jim\u00e9nez <\/strong>\u2014 director of Seville\u2019s <strong><em>Caf\u00e9 Filarm\u00f3nico<\/em><\/strong> and son of <strong>El Isle\u00f1o<\/strong> \u2014 Chac\u00f3n berated Manuel in public, complaining that Torres was more concerned about cockfights than <em>cante<\/em>. El Majareta, as Torres was known at that time in Seville, owned four or five prized gamecocks which he would take to the <strong><em>Caf\u00e9 Novedades<\/em><\/strong> for the cockfights, where a lot of money was at stake. The popular <strong>Juan Dulce<\/strong> was one of the organizers of those Sunday events in the popular hall in La Campana Street.<\/p>\n<p>That scolding of Chac\u00f3n to Manuel was much talked about, and the story even reached Jerez, where the reproach of the master to the young Gypsy <em>cantaor<\/em> wasn\u2019t well received. Despite their mutual admiration and their age difference, there was a rivalry between them. One evening, in a party hosted in the house of the bullfighter <strong>Fuentes<\/strong>, both <em>cantaores<\/em> argued, and I was told by that grandson of Juan de Dios that they almost got into a fistfight. It was thanks to Fuentes and <strong>Javier Molina<\/strong>, who played the guitar for both, that blood wasn\u2019t shed.<\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t look at each other for months, until one evening when Chac\u00f3n attended a performance of Manual in Madrid. Moved, he threw his hat on the stage saying, \u201cLong live the number one of <em>cante<\/em>!\u201d. Torres picked up the hat and returned the compliment by saying, \u201cAnd also number one of cockfights, don Antonio!\u201d. Then they both got drunk and the quarrel was over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
