Last week\u2019s article was about the great veteran singer Mar\u00eda Vargas, and here we go with another formidable lady: Mar\u00eda Teresa S\u00e1nchez Campos, \u201cLa Ca\u00f1eta de M\u00e1laga\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">By now you all know I take a dim view of feminism, so in actual fact, I\u2019m going to talk about Ca\u00f1eta, not because she\u2019s a woman, but because she is a great flamenco artist whom I\u2019ve admired since the 1960s, because on February 8th a street in Marbella received her name and because she is still active and dynamic in her eighth decade \u2013 and the word \u201cactive\u201d is to be taken literally. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">What\u2019s flamenco you say? Flamenco is a pulse, it\u2019s energy, beauty and non-beauty, unexpected sparks of emotion, spontaneity, humorous moments and poignant ones, and you can\u2019t always be sure which is floating to the surface at any given moment. Ca\u00f1eta is all of that. She has the knack of coloring everything flamenco. A specific kind of temperament tinged with home-spun authenticity and artistic innocence from a position of instinctive good taste cultivated over a lifetime. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Nothing frivolous here, this is no cute little old lady in polkadots, despite the predominantly festive nature of much of Ca\u00f1eta\u2019s repertoire. Her occasionally humorous buler\u00edas or tangos are, in essence, searing and plaintive if you scratch the surface just a bit. Isn\u2019t that how flamenco goes after all? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">A street in Marbella\u2019s neighborhood Divina Pastora, despite her coming of age in M\u00e1laga\u2019s historic flamenco neighborhood El Perchel, seems way too little when you consider some flamenco interpreters in other towns who have been worthy of life-sized monuments. But let\u2019s be gracious and celebrate the happy occasion; anything that\u2019s good for flamenco and its interpreters enhances the genre as a whole, and is cause for celebration by followers of the art. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">It would be impossible to name all the major flamenco stars Ca\u00f1eta has performed with. A condensed summary of her biography would have to begin with her mother La Pirula whose house was a sort of point of encounter for the flamenco community of the era according to elder M\u00e1laga artists. La Pirula died when Ca\u00f1eta was a young girl who then continued her basic orientation in the down-trodden but preeminently flamenco neighborhood of El Perchel, performing with la Repompa and other youngsters. After those hard-scrabble beginnings in the post-civil war years, Ca\u00f1eta went to Madrid early on, and was one of the first artists to perform at the legendary Corral de la Morer\u00eda in the nineteen-fifties, eventually making the rounds of the tablaos. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Then came her decades-long marriage to flamenco singer Jos\u00e9 Salazar (Premio de C\u00f3rdoba 1956), the man behind the woman for so many years, who encouraged her to sing when she had primarily been a dancer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Ca\u00f1eta and Jos\u00e9 recorded together, toured the world including a long contract in Japan before it was common for flamenco artists to go to that country, they have been featured at nearly every major festival, traveled with the company of Antonio Gades, opened two tablaos of their own in Puerto Banus, Marbella, and have quietly but steadily spent a lifetime contributing their great knowledge and experience to expressing a dimension of flamenco that at times seems to be slipping away. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">After the unveiling of the street sign that bears her name, and after much protocol and official photos with the mayor of Marbella, we made our way to the Sierra Blanca flamenco pe\u00f1a where guitarists Antonio Soto and Chaparro de M\u00e1laga accompanied a spirited fiesta por buler\u00eda, including Ca\u00f1eta\u2019s participation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Despite her having announced on several occasions plans to retire, we will be able to enjoy the art of Ca\u00f1eta de M\u00e1laga this coming August when she is set to perform at the 52<\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">nd <\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">edition of the Fiesta de la Buler\u00eda in Jerez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9116\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/caneta-su-hija-alcaldesa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"962\" height=\"767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/caneta-su-hija-alcaldesa.jpg 962w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/caneta-su-hija-alcaldesa-600x478.jpg 600w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/caneta-su-hija-alcaldesa-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/caneta-su-hija-alcaldesa-768x612.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s flamenco you say?
