I now live near\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Mazaco<\/i>\u00a0in Coria, and I will take advantage of this fortunate circumstance, because the best place to enjoy a good recital of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0is in a traditional\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>, just like this one. Coria is a town that I really like, for reasons I believe I already explained in this blog, and yesterday there was a recital by the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Rubito\u00a0<i>hijo<\/i>, accompanied by the guitarist Ismael Rueda, who is from the province of M\u00e1laga. It was not a good time, 3 PM, but the fact is that the small venue was packed, and we had a good time listening to traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel Gonz\u00e1lez Cabrera,\u00a0<i>Rubito<\/i>, from La Puebla de Cazalla (Seville province), is a singing heart. There are few\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0so commited to authentic\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>\u00a0like himself, without ever taking a break and having a spectacularly powerful voice. It\u2019s true that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0it\u2019s not just about commitment and voice, but I agree with Chac\u00f3n: when he was asked which were the three qualities a good\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0should have, and he replied \u201cvoice, voice and voice\u201d. On the other hand, Caracol said that voice wasn\u2019t as important, and that singers with soft voices had been able to make important contributions to\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Opinions for all tastes.<\/p>\n<p>Rubito is from the same town as Francisco Moreno Galv\u00e1n, Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla, Jos\u00e9 Menese, Miguel Vargas and Manuel Gerena. That is, a town with a long tradition in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. He\u2019s the son of a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Paradas, Rubito de Par\u00e1. Rubito\u00a0<i>hijo<\/i>\u00a0didn\u2019t need to go anywhere to learn\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, then, because he had a teacher in his own house. Later he learned from everyone, perhaps like most\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, being a particular fan of Miguel Vargas, Menese and Antonio Mairena, without forgetting another\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who is almost like a god to him, Paco Toronjo.<\/p>\n<p>Rubito gave a long recital, with very good details in\u00a0<i>soleares de Alcal\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>soleares de Triana<\/i>,\u00a0<i>alegr\u00edas, tientos-tangos, seguiriyas grana\u00ednas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>. Yet, he started with particularly powerful\u00a0<i>ton\u00e1s<\/i>, which is an unusual way to start a recital, because this is really hard on the voice. There are not many\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0left who are so committed and who sing so fiercely.<\/p>\n<p>I also liked the guitarist, Ismael Rueda, because he refrained from showing off and was always at the service of the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, having a clean technique and a bright sound. The public gave them a standing ovation, because besides performing several good\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, they were brave to do it at three in the afternoon, just after lunch, when a sleepy laziness sets in. These two great professionals were able to enliven us.<\/p>\n<p>This recital, by the way, was part of a circuit of the\u00a0<i>Federaci\u00f3n de Entidades Flamencas de Sevilla<\/i>, dedicated to the\u00a0<i>maestra<\/i>\u00a0Cristina Hoyos. The\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/i>, dear readers, are still essential.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
