Sevilla, February 13, 2019 \/ Photos: Vereas Negras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that all it takes to enjoy good wine is to clear our nose and palate, get the glass to touch our lips without any prejudice and enjoy the moment. Most people who have a hobby do likewise, without any further ambition. The same goes for those who attend a flamenco recital. Yet, as we get know more about the types of grape, the aging process in the cellar and food pairings, the enjoyment of that wine gets multiplied. This also happens in <i>cante<\/i>, without a doubt, in greater or lesser measure.<\/p>\n<p>What we experienced yesterday at Seville\u2019s Teatro Central can hardly be repeated. On occasion of the start of the series <i>Flamenco Viene del Sur<\/i>, organized by the <b>Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco<\/b>, three generations of the same family got on the stage to pay homage to their ancestors and restate the relevance of their <i>cante<\/i> heritage. It wasn\u2019t just any family. They are descendants of the family of Manuel Torres, considered the best <i>cantaor<\/i> of <i>seguiriyas<\/i> of all time. His brother, Pepe Torres, who preserved for posterity the <i>cantes<\/i> of El Planeta, was the father of Tomasa, who married Pies de Plomo (Manuel Giorgio Guti\u00e9rrez), and they in turn brought to this world Jos\u00e9 Georgio Soto, better known as Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa.<\/p>\n<p>There is Jos\u00e9, the living patriarch of the Georgios, opening the evening por <b><i>livianas<\/i><\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><i>Y el cante a m\u00ed me viene,<br \/>\njunto a la sangre, junto a la sangre,<br \/>\nhecho de fantas\u00eda, fatigas y hambre.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Cante comes to me<br \/>\nTogether with blood, together with blood<br \/>\nMade of fantasy, hardships and hunger<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p>His blood, that\u2019s a reference to his son Gabriel and his grandson Manuel. They come to the stage with two great but very different guitarists: <b>David de Arahal<\/b>, full of youth and sensibility; and <b>Paco Cort\u00e9s<\/b>, all expertise and tradition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_10049\" style=\"width: 659px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10049\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10049\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/jose.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa. Foto: Vereas Negras<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Manuel de la Tomasa<\/b> is just nineteen years old. A little over a year ago, he traded his guitar for his passion of <i>cante jondo<\/i>, and since then, he hasn\u2019t stopped singing all over Spain. He has achieved in a few months the renown that others take years to secure. His style of <i>cante<\/i>, full of inspiration and <i>pellizco<\/i>, is becoming extinct, so in a few months he has become a promising hope for true aficionados.<\/p>\n<p>In a <i>mano a mano<\/i> with is uncle Gabriel, the guitars play <b><i>sole\u00e1 por buler\u00edas<\/i><\/b> under the careful watch of the grandfather and master. Manuel picks the <i>cantes<\/i> of Juaniqu\u00ed de Lebrija and Rosal\u00eda de Triana. <b>Gabriel de la Tomasa<\/b> (b. Seville, 1980) prefers Ram\u00f3n el Ollero to flatter his district of La Macarena <i>por sole\u00e1 de Triana<\/i>, and he ends up paying homage to Manuel Torre in the style of Frijones. \u201cListen, listen, that\u2019s the <b><i>Romance de la Mora Moraima<\/i><\/b>\u201d. Uncle and nephew take us to Lebrija in a duet, carried by the elegant guitar of David de Arahal. Manuel faces his uncle, both with their profiles to the public and raising their arms they act up the dialog between Moraima and Moro Mazote. If I could only open wide the doors of the theater so everyone could see this! What an opening act.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s going on with the curtains? It\u2019s taking ten minutes to get them lowered. This will cool down things for sure.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed. The two <b><i>tarantas<\/i><\/b> of Manuel Torres under horrible lightning don\u2019t help to regain the previous excitement. One of Manuel\u2019s best qualities is his ability to communicate, which in flamenco language we call <i>doler<\/i> (\u201cto hurt\u201d). If you sit in front of him on stage, you\u2019ll know what I mean, you\u2019ll notice the fire in his eyes turning the puppy into a fiery lion. Yet, this evening I cannot see his eyes, the bad light darkens his whole face. After travelling to Alcal\u00e1, C\u00e1diz and Triana <i>por <b>sole\u00e1<\/b><\/i>, the <i>pellizcos<\/i> come back again, allowing the public to enjoy a little trip to Jerez <i>por <b>buler\u00edas<\/b><\/i>, with a lot of <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i> and gallantry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_10047\" style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10047\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10047\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/manuel.jpg\" alt=\"Manuel de la Tomasa. Foto: Vereas Negras<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s the turn of Gabriel de la Tomasa, who demonstrates his expertise dealing directly with the public. \u201cWe\u2019ll raffle some goodies later\u201d, he said, after excelling in <i><b>canti\u00f1as<\/b> de C\u00e1diz<\/i> and <i>de C\u00f3rdoba<\/i>, although not <i>por alegr\u00edas<\/i>, accompanied by the masterful <i>toque<\/i> of Paco Cort\u00e9s. That was after the <i><b>malague\u00f1a<\/b> de la Trini<\/i>and the <i><b>jaberas<\/b><\/i>. And after the round of <i><b>soleares<\/b> apol\u00e1s de Triana<\/i>, the <i>alfarera<\/i> and that of Charamusco. Look just how he creates as he sings, just like the grandfather, and like his nephew. How hard is to find this in our days.<\/p>\n<p>And what about don Jos\u00e9? His abilities are intact in the full maturity of his art. It\u2019s not that his talent has just been discovered, but many young people have never heard about him. He\u2019s a <i>cantaor<\/i> able to take a very ancient <i>cante<\/i>, a <i><b>Ca\u00f1a<\/b><\/i>, turn it around and upside down and serve it in a glass full of modernity. Fortunately, the kids give us a <i><b>seguiriya<\/b><\/i>, the anthem of the Tomasa family. Pure <i>cante<\/i>. From now on, even our eyelashes \u201churt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>After two <i><b>martinetes<\/b><\/i>, of those which numb our senses, his grandson Manuel shows up. He\u2019ll give it all today. Look at his face, now perfectly lit on stage. The fiery eyes, like a matador. <i><b>Carceleras<\/b><\/i> to be remembered and the <i><b>ton\u00e1<\/b> del cerrojo<\/i>, which made everyone in the theater cheer for one long minute.
