P\u00e9rez. Seville, March 18, 2018. Photo: Andalucia TV<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Flamenco aficionados once again got together last Saturday at noon, under a bothersome rain. Cante jondo never fills venues, they say. Yet, the\u00a0<i>Casa de la Cultura<\/i>\u00a0in Villanueva del Ariscal (Seville province) was pretty full this morning best suited to staying home by the fireplace than to attending a recital. El Boleco is coming, you know? Have you ever watched him perform? No? You\u2019re going to flip. There is a religious silence welcoming a 16-year old kid. Who is the guitarist? Carri\u00f3n? This is going to be great.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Laguna Medina<\/b>\u00a0(a.k.a. \u201cPepe El Boleco\u201d), born at La Puebla de Cazalla (Seville province) in 2001, has a fake ID. He\u2019s tall and skinny, like a reed that\u2019s just about to break. His head evokes a Gypsy patriarch, with dark skin and the grave expression of a concerned adult, his eyes dark as his throat. The voice coming out of that seemingly old and beaten-up throat chills the bones from the moment he starts singing a\u00a0<i>seguiriya<\/i>\u00a0until he finishes up with the\u00a0<i>tarantos<\/i>\u00a0of Camar\u00f3n and El Chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Pepe didn\u2019t have a good start\u00a0<i>por alegr\u00edas<\/i>, that\u2019s just the way it is. He\u2019s an unpolished black diamond and he\u2019ll have to clear his path from his teen years until he becomes a master. He knows that, his friends remind him of it, and M\u00e1rquez El Zapatero told him, from first row, with his eyes full of emotion: \u201cKeep a straight path, don\u2019t get sidetracked. You have what\u2019s more important: passion, and a great voice. When you reach my age, you\u2019ll be a hundred times wiser than I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pepe El Boleco then took the bull by the horns, after a superb introduction\u00a0<i>por sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0<b>Antonio Carri\u00f3n<\/b>(born in Mairena del Alcor in 1964). We can tell when Antonio feels at ease with a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, all we have to do is see the smile of satisfaction on his face as he plays notes for El Boleco. We could feel the spirit of Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez\u00a0<i>Chocolate<\/i>\u00a0in Pepe\u2019s contorted face, as he sang a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1 de Joaqu\u00edn<\/i>, a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1 de Juaniqu\u00ed<\/i>\u00a0and a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1 de Mercedes La Sarneta<\/i>\u00a0in the linked style of Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Then come the\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>\u00a0of T\u00edo Chocolate, very well performed, and El Boleco comes on top, even smiling for the first time. \u201cI\u2019ll dedicate this\u00a0<i>fandanguillo<\/i>\u00a0to all of you\u201d, he says, getting up, dismissing his microphone and showing off his talent, emulating Caracol with the word \u201c<i>oma\u00edta<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez\u00a0<i>Chocolate<\/i>\u00a0wasn\u2019t known for having a good sense of rhythm when he was accompanied by a guitarist, and the town of La Puebla is not known for its buler\u00edas cortas. Thus, we were pleasantly surprised by the ease with which El Boleco sang this\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>. Before we noticed, he had gone to Jerez de la Frontera and back, after soaking his mouth with the darkest sounds of La Plazuela neighborhood, singing the echoes of Viejo Agujetas and T\u00edo Borrico.
