\nImpressive, in one word, and also in two. That\u2019s the adjective used to define great occasions, and the hyperbolic word that comes to mind after leaving the theater, dancing. \u201cDon\u2019t write anything now. Wait until tomorrow, when you\u2019re more focused. After all, it\u2019s just flamenco<\/i>\u201d. As if it were so easy to tell apart this genre these days.<\/p>\n

\u201cD\u00e9jame que te baile<\/i>\u201d is not a new show. Mercedes Ruiz and Santiago Lara already premiered it in London, over two years ago, a few days before performing it at the Festival de Jerez in 2016. Thus, it has many hours of flight, of hard work and practice, although it came to Seville fresh, very fresh, like a child knocking on your door with a basket of fruits. It\u2019s hard to believe that nowadays it\u2019s a wonder being able to attend a show of\u00a0flamenco<\/i>, as it seems like one word is no longer enough, and now it must always be joined with another term: flamenco\u00a0something<\/i>;\u00a0something<\/i>\u00a0flamenco\u2026<\/p>\n

Mercedes Ruiz<\/b>, born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1980, wanted to dance, and she danced. She danced like she knows better: refined, elegant, classic and upright, mostly, and mischievous and amusing when required. This time she dispensed with conceptual\u00a0baile<\/i>, drama, and contemporary dance, where she possesses extensive experience and knowledge, drawing upon her power and her flawless skill to carry out one of the best performances we\u2019ve ever seen of her.<\/p>\n

She stuck to the basic\u00a0cantes<\/i>, with the sole exception being the opening act\u00a0por milonga<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0garrot\u00edn<\/i>, by the beautiful voice of\u00a0David Lagos<\/b>\u00a0(born in Jerez in 1973), which woke up the public, preparing the spectators for what was to come. A double ration of traditional flamenco was served by\u00a0David Carpio<\/b>\u00a0(born in Jerez in 1975),\u00a0por seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0martinetes<\/i>, the latter face-to-face with the public, when Mercedes, in a masculine and colorful short outfit, got her feet in the sixth gear, evoking Carmen Amaya with her hardened face.<\/p>\n

Cante<\/i>\u00a0was center-stage and never played second-fiddle to\u00a0baile<\/i>, it was rather the other way around. Lagos once again delighted us with a couple of\u00a0pregones<\/i>: the\u00a0preg\u00f3n del frutero<\/i>, popularized by Manuel Vallejo, and the\u00a0preg\u00f3n de los caramelos de Macand\u00e9<\/i>. Back to C\u00e1diz, Santiago Lara\u2019s guitar called the\u00a0bailaora<\/i>,\u00a0por buler\u00edas<\/i>, and she obliged, spreading art and flavour all over the theater with her perfect turns in her\u00a0bata de cola<\/i>. Rounded arm movements, delightfully slow, endless, looking up to the balconies at Palma street.<\/p>\n

After the flamboyant round of\u00a0fandangos<\/i>, with got to the mother of all\u00a0baile<\/i>: the\u00a0sole\u00e1<\/i>. Watch out, all are from Jerez, but looks like they\u2019ll give it a try: David Carpio, the Gypsy from La Plazuela with a piercing voice, escaped for a second to the nearby Castilla street, returning with Triana\u2019s\u00a0soleares alfareras<\/i>, those of Antonio el Arenero, to be precise. Mercedes Ruiz, with a long black-and-gold dress, drew upon the whole range of her strongest\u00a0baile<\/i>. Her toned arms infatuated, he eyes bewitched. Her feet disappeared.<\/p>\n

We got to the fiesta, but this\u00a0bailaora<\/i>\u00a0from Jerez was brave, picking\u00a0buler\u00edas romanceadas<\/i>\u00a0from Utrera. It smelled like traditional Gypsy\u00a0baile<\/i>\u00a0by the old\u00a0flamencas<\/i>\u00a0from Nueva street. David Lagos then sang the C\u00e1diz styles, including the\u00a0zambra \u201cCalcelero, carcelero\u201d<\/i>, and Carpio took over the guitar from Lara, so he could do his little dance, and maybe here it got a bit long, with so many\u00a0pata\u00edtas<\/i>. Yet, the public was enthralled and cheered all the way until the very last clap. I can assure you that if Mercedes didn\u2019t put a stop of to that last standing ovation, we would be still there, clapping<\/p>\n
