One of those albums with a special place in my heart was recorded by Jos\u00e9 Cort\u00e9s Jim\u00e9nez, better known in the flamenco world by his stage name\u00a0<i>Pansequito<\/i>, his family nickname, or also\u00a0<i>Pansequito del Puerto<\/i>, because even as Jos\u00e9 was born in La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n in 1946, he lived since an early age in El Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda, and it\u2019s very common in the flamenco world to add the artist\u2019s hometown to his stage name. That album, pictured here, was published in 1974 under the record label\u00a0<b>Movieplay (S-26.216)<\/b>, and it also featured the guitars of Juan and Pepe Habichuela (born in Granada, in 1932 and 1944 respectively).<\/p>\n<p>This was Pansequito\u2019s forth album, released after he took part in the seventh edition of the\u00a0<i>Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de C\u00f3rdoba<\/i>\u00a0(year 1974), where this artist was awarded a prize specifically created for this occasion: the Ministry of Information and Tourism\u2019s Creativity Prize (<i>Premio a la Creatividad del Ministerio de Informaci\u00f3n y Turismo<\/i>), because the singing style of Pansequito didn\u2019t fit at all within the standards of this contest in C\u00f3rdoba. As we can see in the album\u2019s image, this prize was publicized in the sleeve. Oddly, it was never awarded to any other artist, thus Pansequito is its sole recipient, something that speaks volumes. When we listen to this album, we realize right away what was the reason that prompted the jury in this contest of C\u00f3rdoba to award Pansequito such unique prize: the creative personality of this artist from La L\u00ednea and El Puerto.<\/p>\n<p>The first track of the album is his number one hit:\u00a0<b><i>T\u00e1pame<\/i><\/b>, widely known\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0which, together with the other two\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0in this album,\u00a0<b><i>Mi ni\u00f1o<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b><i>\u00a1Ay, qu\u00e9 mora!<\/i><\/b>, show Pansequito\u2019s mastery in this\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>, where he is absolutely outstanding, having an overwhelming rhythm, with unique forms and turns that have led aficionados to call such style\u00a0<i>Buler\u00edas de Pansequito<\/i>, since they\u2019re his own creation. The guitars of the Habichuelas are impeccable, with these two brothers of Granada showing the maximum concentration and taking the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0in their wings all along. The sole\u00e1\u00a0<b><i>Dejadme flores<\/i><\/b>, a solo with the guitar of Pepe Habichuela, is a monument. Yes, a monument. The first verse,\u00a0<i>Al pa\u00f1o fino en la tienda<\/i>, in the style of Alcal\u00e1, made famous in the voice of Manolito de Mar\u00eda, is performed by Pansequito in his own way, but it\u2019s the second verse\u00a0<i>Y corta, es que la v\u00eda era mu corta<\/i>\u00a0which blows our minds away. What a way to link the tercios! What a superb breathing control! It doesn\u2019t matter how many years have passed, even after listening to this\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0one thousand times, it still blows or minds away. Jos\u00e9 then continues with\u00a0<b><i>Es un suplicio el quererte<\/i><\/b>,\u00a0<i>por tientos<\/i>, the most conservative track in the album. The commercial bent is added in the following track,\u00a0<b><i>El cristal cuando se empa\u00f1a<\/i><\/b>, a fresh rumba which was also performed in those days by the band\u00a0<i>Los Chichos<\/i>. By including this rumba in the album, Pansequito perhaps wanted to make a splash like Paco de Luc\u00eda did the year before with his rumba\u00a0<i>Entre dos aguas<\/i>. The album continues with the\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>\u00a0<b><i>La L\u00ednea<\/i><\/b>, this time just accompanied by the guitar of Juan Habichuela. In these\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>, Pansequito sings to his people, once again showing off his powerful lungs, singing it all in almost one breath. The last two tracks of this album are the\u00a0<i>alegr\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0<b><i>No s\u00e9 si debo quedarme<\/i><\/b>, another style of cante that is unique to this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, and the tangos\u00a0<b><i>El puente al agua le dice<\/i><\/b>, both accompanied by the outstanding guitars of Juan and Pepe Habichuela, the universal artists from Granada.<\/p>\n<p>Nine tracks in total, where Pansequito renews and creates without any cheap or weird tricks, something which sadly is very common these days. It\u2019s been more than forty years since this album was released, and at that time Pansequito was a revolutionary. Today, he\u2019s a classic. His love for his art and his perseverance made this miracle happen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translate by P.
