At that time, my concept of <i>cante<\/i> was something else. As my understanding of flamenco matured, I began to assimilate new interpretative horizons. Nowadays, Enrique Morente is one of my favorite <i>cantaores<\/i>, whom I never get bored of, and from whom I\u2019m always learning new things, because flamenco is so complex and vast that it\u2019s always full of surprises. The great guitarist Manolo Sanl\u00facar once said:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cIf you don\u2019t like something, ask yourself if it\u2019s really worthless, or if maybe you\u2019re just not ready to feel and understand it yet, because arrogance closes the doors of knowledge\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Wise Don Manolo!<\/p>\n<p>Enrique Morente Cotelo (b. Granada, 1942 \u2013 d. Madrid, 2010), or simply <i>Enrique Morente<\/i> in the art of flamenco, has an extensive discography, a monumental work including the popular and the intellectual, tradition and experimentation, the memory of the old masters and his own mastery. The album we\u2019re discussing today was produced by the flamencologist Jos\u00e9 Blas Vega and includes the brilliant guitars of Manzanita, Luis el Habichuela and Amador. It was released in 1975 with the title <b>\u201cSe hace camino al andar\u201d (Clave-Hispavox 18-1342 S)<\/b>, evocative title meaning <i>\u201cThe path is made by walking\u201d<\/i>, inspired in Antonio Machado\u2019s well-known poem <i>\u201cCaminante no hay camino\u2026\u201d<\/i> (\u201c<i>Walker, there is no path\u2026<\/i>\u201d), basically a statement of intent by Enrique, who after exploring and learning from the old masters like Pepe el de la Matrona, Aurelio de C\u00e1diz, Bernardo el de los Lobitos and Rafael Romero, decides to forge his own path, step by step, making his own path by walking. The album features a text by Jos\u00e9 Luis Ortiz Nuevo which is worth quoting:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cMorente, brave in his innovative maturity, young and old like the authentic tradition of those who were not satisfied with repeating again and again the old cantes who once were new, and which can also become anew in our days\u2026\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>So much so that in this album our protagonist names four different <i>cantes<\/i> after himself, like the first track: <b><i>\u201cA la hora de la muerte\u201d (Tangos de Morente)<\/i><\/b>, a true delicacy for our ears, where Manzanita and Amador convey a galloping rhythm between <i>tangos<\/i> and <i>rumba<\/i>. Enrique fills this <i>cante<\/i> with innovative twists and turns, with original \u201c<i>ayeos<\/i>\u201d in the intro, and also at the end of the verse \u201c<i>A mi lengua le ech\u00e9 un nudo<\/i>\u201d, where he seems to evocate the typical \u201c<i>ayeos<\/i>\u201d more proper of of <i>ca\u00f1as<\/i> and <i>polos<\/i>. Then we can hear Morente cheering on Manzatina, as the accompaniment by the six strings of this late composer, singer and guitarist would give goosebumps to the coldest aficionado. At the end of these <i>tangos<\/i>, \u201c<i>Abierta estaba la rosa\u2026<\/i>\u201d I simply have no words to describe the amazing creation of Enrique Morente with the lyrics of Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca (who incidentally was also born in Granada). Impressive. The next track, <b><i>\u201cVoces doy al viento\u201d (Siguiriyas de Morente)<\/i><\/b>, Enrique is accompanied solely by Manzanita, who in the intro reminds me of the omnipotent Paco de Luc\u00eda. Morente handles these <i>seguiriyas<\/i> with a lot of personality, although he perhaps gets a bit too creative in the verses, in my humble opinion, of course. That\u2019s still a far cry from the formidable \u201c<i>seguiriy\u00f3n<\/i>\u201d he sang with the guitar of Juan Manuel Ca\u00f1izares in Carlos Saura\u2019s movie \u201c<i>Flamenco<\/i>\u201d, but we know the path is made by walking. The following track is <b><i>\u201dGranada, calle de Elvira\u201d (Fandangos de Granada)<\/i><\/b>, with an \u201c<i>abandolao<\/i>\u201d rhythm by Manzanita and Luis el Habichuela accompanying this <i>fandango<\/i> attributed to Frasquito Hierbabuena. Morente, Manzanita and Luis el Habichuela continue with <b><i>\u201cLlor\u00e9 m\u00e1s que Jerem\u00edas\u201d (Soleares)<\/i><\/b>, with the sounds of Alcal\u00e1 and Triana ending the side A of this record. In the first track of side B, <b><i>\u201cYo ser\u00e9 como la mimbre\u201d (Tientos de Morente)<\/i><\/b>, this <i>cantaor<\/i> from Granada gives us a mixed bag, that is, he performs the first verses in the traditional way and then switches to his own style. Incidentally, the last lyrics that Enrique sings in these <i>tientos<\/i>, which give the name to this track, were performed many years later by Camar\u00f3n de la Isla. These two geniuses admired each other, without any trace of racial prejudices, something which sadly is still latent in 21st-century flamenco. Then comes <b><i>\u201cMinerico barrenero\u201d (Taranto)<\/i><\/b>, a <i>levantica<\/i> that Enrique, Manzanita and Luis el Habichuela adjusted to the rythm of <i>taranto<\/i>, where we can appreciate Morente\u2019s full voice range. Deadly! From Spain\u2019s Levante, we travel to C\u00e1diz with <b><i>\u201cSale el sol\u201d (Alegr\u00edas)<\/i><\/b>, as the sounds of that ancient city could not be absent from this album, although in this occasion Morente follows more traditional parameters, wrapped by the guitars of Manzanita and Amador. The album continues with <b><i>\u201cContando los eslabones\u201d (Fandangos de Morente)<\/i><\/b>, where this <i>cantaor<\/i> sings fandangos with a <i>taranto<\/i> feel, an original innovation by Morente which oddly was first recorded by Camar\u00f3n in the song \u201c<i>Ni que me manden a m\u00ed<\/i>\u201d (1975), although in my opinion, De la Isla had already recorded something similar a year earlier with \u201c<i>Se pelean en mi mente<\/i>\u201d. The album ends with <b><i>\u201dTrabajar y madrugar\u201d (Mineras)<\/i><\/b>, where Morente is accompanied solely by Manzanita, and where he sings the well-known lyrics \u201c<i>Me llaman Pedro el Morato<\/i>\u201c, which were also performed by his mentor Pepe el de la Matrona.<\/p>\n<p>Summarizing, like the poem by Antonio Machado says:<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i>Walker, it\u2019s your steps<br \/>\nThe path, and nothing else<br \/>\nWalker, there is no path<br \/>\nThe path is made by walking.<\/p>\n<p>By walking the path is made<br \/>\nAnd when we turn around, looking back<br \/>\nWe can see the track<br \/>\nThat will never be walked again<\/p>\n<p>Walker there is no path<br \/>\nOnly wakes on the sea.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
