Such attention to detail\u201d. \u201cYes, too bad they left the outside unfinished\u201d. \u201cNo, it\u2019s not that. It was being renovated and they ran out of money\u201d. The fact is that they didn\u2019t finish the renovations in time for the most important cultural event of the year in the town of Arahal. This was the 17th edition of the <i><b>Festival Flamenco Al Gurug\u00fa<\/b>, Memorial Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/i>, celebrated each year in the Municipal Theater, attracting flamenco aficionados all over Seville province and beyond. Inside, six hundred brand-new seats vied to be picked by two hundred aficionados. With each ticket at eight euros, there was no way to balance the books.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s surprising, because the performance was be by <b>Israel Fern\u00e1ndez<\/b>, a trendy <i>cantaor<\/i> who is in the midst of a nationwide tour promoting his latest album <i>Universo Pastora<\/i>, honoring <i><b>Pastora Pav\u00f3n, La Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/b><\/i>, whom is truly worshiped in Arahal because this was the birthplace of her maternal family and also of her brother Arturo Pav\u00f3n, father of the great pianist. Arahal is one of the pillars which sustain flamenco in the province of Seville, but last Saturday it looked as if the aficionados were busier with more important things than attending their festival.<\/p>\n<p>People said he was coming from Zamora, and that the day before he performed in Valladolid, and that he looked tired and his voice was worn out. He started the evening with <i>sole\u00e1s por buler\u00edas<\/i>, every and each of those recorded by <b>Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/b> as <i>soleares bailables<\/i>, from \u201c<i>V\u00e1lgame Dios, no le temes<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>Que me mand\u00f3 Undeb\u00e9<\/i>\u201d, passing by \u201c<i>A la mare de mi alma<\/i>\u201d. Israel has a privileged voice and he dared to imitate each breath of the so-called <i>Prince of La Alameda<\/i>, which is laudable, because this incurs the risk of inviting comparisons with one of the best <i>cantaores<\/i> of all time, and no one would be able to resist such comparison for long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to sing with affection, with humility, with my heart and with all the love in the world for you all.\u201d, said this Gypsy from Toledo, who has traded the good-kid looks of his early days for a Camar\u00f3n-style mane and worn-out jeans. By his side, there was <b>Carlos de Jacoba<\/b> (born in Motril, Granada, in 1983), who made his guitar sound bright, preferring the clarity and quality of his strumming than theatrics, although his accompaniment seemed to lack the expressiveness required for such performances. Israel nailed Manuel Torres\u2019 <b><i>taranta<\/i><\/b> in the style of jos\u00e9 monge with the lyrics of t\u00edo rufino, and others by ni\u00f1a de los peines, that of carretero, to be precise.<\/p>\n<p>Then came Pastora\u2019s <i>tangos<\/i>, perfectly executed, although the hoping from Pastora to Camar\u00f3n, and then to Valderrama and Marchena deprived the cante from its content and its essence, which should not be confused with an attempt to find a unique personality. Exactly the same happened with the <i>grana\u00edna y media de Tom\u00e1s<\/i>, which was the dullest part of the evening.<\/p>\n<p>The moment of truth arrived with the call of the <i>seguiriya<\/i>, the palo which measures the depth of <i>cantaores<\/i>. Israel didn\u2019t disappoint this time, finally giving it all and enthralling the public as he sang the verses of Manuel Molina, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines and Diego el Marrurro, closing <i>por carceleras<\/i> with echoes of Juan Talega. Nothing much to add, as the public celebrated effusively until the end, particularly Pastora\u2019s <i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, performed very well by this <i>cantaor<\/i> from Toledo, and the <i>fandangos<\/i> of Pepe Pinto, El Rubio and Jos\u00e9 Cepero, closing <i>por Huelva<\/i>.
