Photos: Quico P\u00e9rez-Ventana<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nothing can exist unless it\u2019s true to itself, so the city of Cartagena, which is so <i>flamenca<\/i>, could not exist without having a flamenco festival.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca Antonio Pi\u00f1ana<\/i> came up with the idea of the week-long flamenco festival <i>Perlas a Millares<\/i> (\u201c<i>Thousands of Pearls<\/i>\u201d), having as its main goal to bring back the famous <i>Concurso nacional de cantes por cartageneras<\/i>, which had been taking place intermittently since 1921 (yes, a year before the iconic contest of Granada), with the first edition of that contest\u2019s new era ending last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cFlamenco Week\u201d included a course about <i>cantes mineros<\/i>, with particular emphasis in the <i>cantes por cartageneras<\/i>, with experts speaking about different areas of flamenco research, such as Manuel Boh\u00f3rquez, Paco Paredes, Jose Francisco Ortega Castej\u00f3n and Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ednez Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/p>\n<p>On June 8, flamenco performances took place, featuring Antonio Ayala <i>El Rampa<\/i> (accompanied by the guitar of Pepe Pi\u00f1ana), Curro Pi\u00f1ana (accompanied by the guitar of his father, Antonio Pi\u00f1ana) and finally the company of baile <i>La Truco<\/i>. Curro Pi\u00f1ana was the most successful artist that evening; the majority of his performance centered on singing various styles of <i>cantes mineros<\/i>, honoring his grandfather, who gave those styles such renown. In the ensemble of the <i>bailaora<\/i> from Madrid, the sorrowful and powerful <i>cante<\/i> of Chelo Pantoja was outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>June 9, 15th and 16th focused on the contest of <i>cante<\/i>, where the prize for the most well-rounded <i>cantaor<\/i> was awarded to Antonio Porcuna <i>El Veneno<\/i>, who is very well known by the aficionados of this land, since he won the famed <i>L\u00e1mpara Minera<\/i> prize in the year 1999. The victory of this <i>cantaor<\/i> was self-evident, as he easily surpassed the level of all other contestants.<\/p>\n<p>The prize for the best <i>cantes por cartageneras<\/i> was awarded to Jos\u00e9 Garc\u00eda Vilches <i>El Petro<\/i>, and the prize for the best <i>cante de comp\u00e1s<\/i> ended up in the hands of V\u00edctor Palacios, from Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>Marian Fern\u00e1ndez and Miguel \u00c1ngel Lara Solano were finalists, but didn\u2019t win any prize. Marian, the only <i>cantaora<\/i> (female flamenco singer) in the final round of the contest, was also its great revelation, despite her youth (she was born in 1992), and her voice evokes the echoes of an experienced <i>cantaora<\/i>. Her participation in this contest has made her known among the local aficionados, upon whom she left a very good impression.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>The award ceremony for the contest of lyrics for <i>cantes por cartageneras<\/i>, honoring the local lyricist Gin\u00e9s Jorquera, took place in the evening of the <i>cante<\/i> contest finals. The winning lyric was written by Rafael Dom\u00ednguez Villa, who used the maritime theme that is so common in these lyrics (together with those relating with the work in the mines). It goes like this: <i>Al lado del rompeolas\/ mi coraz\u00f3n a\u00fan te espera\/ donde empieza la escollera\/ donde la playa est\u00e1 sola\/ las noches de primavera<\/i> (<i>Besides the breakwater \/ my heart still awaits you \/ where the pier begins \/ and the beach is desolated \/ in the spring evenings<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Organizing a flamenco contest in our days is a courageous undertaking. Some of the goals of this festival, such as preserving and promoting the <i>cartageneras<\/i> and other <i>cantes mineros<\/i>, are already well covered by <i>Festival del Cante de las Minas de La Uni\u00f3n<\/i>, so there was a need to go beyond and inundate Cartagena with flamenco. And they achieved this. While the public\u2019s attendance wasn\u2019t massive, it was respectable, considering it was a program of flamenco art, which should already be an incentive for the organizers setting their sights on 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The directors of the <i>Pe\u00f1a Antonio Pi\u00f1ana<\/i> can be proud of their work and their achievements. The public institutions of this city and this region would do well not just in continuing the support they gave this first edition, but increase it and bet decisively on an event of this kind, which has a tremendous potential.<\/p>\n<p>A fair share of the performances had as their main stage one of the icons of Cartagena\u2019s architecture, the Faculty of Business Sciences (<i>Facultad de Ciencias de la Empresa<\/i>), whose building was originally a prison. Yes, it\u2019s the celebrated Cartagena Penitentiary, that \u201ccemetery of living men\u201d, as the well-known verse goes. According to the poet Garc\u00eda Lorca, this was the birthplace of the \u201c<i>playera or pla\u00f1idera, characteristic of this fertile jail of Cartagena, as well as the authentic Gypsy martinete<\/i>&#8220;.
