We could smell the scent of peppermint (<i>yerbabuena<\/i>) as soon as we got out of our cars, because even the security guards had peppermint leaves pinned on their lapels to celebrate this town\u2019s festival. \u201cFive euros, that\u2019s all\u201d, was the greeting of one of the friendly ladies selling the tickets of this festival which was held last Friday, the night of July 6, at <i>Sant\u00edsimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz<\/i> square&#8230; There were people from Lebrija, Utrera, Cuervo, and Jerez and also aficionados from the surrounding area who came to enjoy the <i>cante<\/i>, <i>baile<\/i> and <i>toque<\/i> performed by the featured artists, mostly from Jerez. The high artistic level of the lineup was apparent, surpassing previous editions. The artist who was given the <i>Yerbabuena de Plata<\/i> award was the painter <b>Fernando Bravo<\/b>, which was presented by <i>professor<\/i> Juan Manuel Su\u00e1rez Jap\u00f3n. Manuel Curao was the festival\u2019s MC, introducing each artist, welcoming the public and the first performer, <b>Manuel Cordero<\/b>. This local artist was joined by the guitar of <b>Ni\u00f1o del Fraile<\/b>, and started por <i>peteneras<\/i>, oblivious to flamenco superstition. He ended with fandangos in a performance cheered by the locals, where we could hear the public\u2019s first <i>jaleos<\/i>.<strong>Fernando Bravo<\/strong><strong>Manuel Cordero<\/strong><strong>Ni\u00f1o del Fraile<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3361\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y01.jpg 526w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y01-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then it was the turn of <b>Tomasa<\/b>, her voice like a gale broken by the emotion and the memories of the golden age of flamenco festivals. She\u2019s able to take over the stage like few others and her voice range is suitable to whatever she feels like singing, from <i>tientos<\/i> and <i>tangos<\/i> to <i>sole\u00e1s<\/i> and <i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>. <b>Antonio Higuero<\/b>\u2018s guitar turned out to be unbreakable, solid and as good as the very best, with flavor and serenity, like a bullfighter of art. <b>La Macanita<\/b>, fresh from her great success at the <i>Potaje de Utrera<\/i> festival, settled her performance <i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>, with the feel of Jerez and the <i>palmas<\/i> of Chicharito, Macano and Jos\u00e9 Rubichi. This <i>cantaora<\/i> form Jerez\u2019s Santiago district is always evolving, even when she\u2019s at her best. She never lets pass any opportunity to leave her public breathless, and she has become an icon of the great women of <i>cante<\/i>. Accustomed to being the closing act in many festivals, he climbed on stage with that rock star attitude which excites young people, pleases children and is so familiar to the older public. Capullo can bring down any venue whenever he wants. He has charisma and the ability to attract public and to convey his emotions, plus a unique personality. Belonging to that same generation of the diamonds of Jerez\u2019s <i>cante<\/i> such as the late Torta, Luis de la Pica, Diego Rubichi and Manuel Moneo, he started his performance <i>por buler\u00edas para escuchar<\/i>, accompanied by the guitar of <b>Manuel Jero<\/b>, one of the most acclaimed that night. How much skill in those hands! There was focus and complicity between <i>cantaor<\/i> and guitarist, and between Jos\u00e9 Pe\u00f1a and Jos\u00e9 Rubichi, in <i>palmas<\/i> and percussion. \u201cWhoever can\u2019t sing like him, doesn\u2019t know how to sing\u201d, he stated, referring to the guitarist. The <i>fandangos<\/i> were a crowd pleaser, and the <i>tangos<\/i> got several people dancing. Dozens of people crowded together around the stage, eager to party with Capullo\u2019s lyrics. He ended his performance <i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>, like the artists of Jerez usually do, without forgetting to mention Paco de Luc\u00eda, \u201cthe best of all times\u201d, the trashy TV programs of <i>Telecinco<\/i> and Madrid\u2019s soccer player Sergio Ramos. A revolutionary, as always.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y05.jpg 537w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y05-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 537px) 100vw, 537px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y06.jpg 534w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y06-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/y06-128x86.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then it was time for the official ceremony and a break, a bit too long to allow the following performance to rouse the public. However, <b>Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/b> is always up to any challenge, and he earnestly committed himself to the passionate world of <i>seguiriyas<\/i>, with his powerful echo awaking the memories of older days. With the brilliant <b>Manuel Valencia<\/b> on the guitar and the <i>palmas<\/i> of Diego Montoya and Manuel Salado, Jes\u00fas sent the public to a higher orbit, because he has what it takes, and he has shown what a well-rounded artist he is, communicating with his singing, because there\u2019s no higher truth than the one taken from the deepest reaches of the soul. The <i>alegr\u00edas<\/i> managed to cool things down a bit, although they didn\u2019t lack <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i> and feeling. Jes\u00fas also remembered his land with <i>buler\u00edas para escuchar<\/i> and the <i>buler\u00edas<\/i> at the end. We can say that long festivals are becoming increasingly unpopular, and even as this wasn\u2019t particularly long, few people can stand to remain in their seats for three hours. Yet, the good aficionados knew that they should better stay to enjoy the fury of <b>Manuela Carpio<\/b>, who was superb in <i>alegr\u00edas<\/i>, <i>sole\u00e1s<\/i> and, of course, <i>buler\u00edas<\/i>. She also sang, because she\u2019s omnipotent. This matriarch of Jerez\u2019s <i>baile<\/i> was accompanied by <b>Manuel Ta\u00f1\u00e9<\/b>, the best of them that night, &#8216;<b>El Pulga<\/b>&#8216; and <b>Mar\u00eda Viz\u00e1rraga<\/b>, and the guitar of <b>Juan Diego Mateos<\/b>, of great quality. <i>Palmas<\/i> were by Iv\u00e1n Carpio and Israel de Juanillorro. Three suits, three! A complete performance by someone who had retired to her academy but decided to come back to the stages after some resounding successes in the last few years, performing in venues such as the Villamarta theater. Her maturity gives her self-confidence and allows herself to enjoy her own performance as much as the public does. She was spectacular on her feet and performed like the greatest.
