Until a few years ago, Conil de la Frontera was a small coastal town in the Campo de Gibraltar county which was famous for its little white houses and its endless deserted beaches. Eventually, it managed to cling to the wealth of tourism, betting on quality and excellence, and nowadays it leads the hotel and lodging industry of C\u00e1diz province.<\/p>\n

Among the best of that lodging there\u2019s the Blanco y Verde<\/i><\/b> hotel and restaurant, where the best retinto<\/i> stake and the best bluefin tuna in that county is served. In this place, Diego Trujillo and Antonio S\u00e1nchez Montilla, among other great aficionados of traditional cante<\/i>, set up a few years ago the Foro Cultural Flamenco Conil 2016<\/i>, which in turn took the initiative to create the Festival Flamenco At\u00fan de Almadraba<\/i>, whose first edition was held last Saturday, honoring Alonso N\u00fa\u00f1ez N\u00fa\u00f1ez \u201cRancapino\u201d<\/b>.<\/p>\n

This master from Chiclana always had the gift of conveying sorrow and anguish through his voice, hoarse due to walking barefoot, as the artists himself explained. On Saturday he sang a fandango with these lyrics: Ay, que mientras mi \u201cmoma\u00edta\u201d de mi alma a m\u00ed me viva \/ que dentro de mi casita tiene un sitio, ay, anda\u2026<\/i> (\u201cOh, as long as my dear mother lives \/ She\u2019ll always have a place at my home\u2026\u201d), and it was a privilege to see from the row of geranium flowerpots the eyes of Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez welling up. Because, being past seventy years old, Alonso\u2019s voice brings up the memory of a thousand guttings which wisely separate the meat of bluefin tuna in twenty-four blood-red pieces. Around that ritual, with two hours in front and two hours behind, much of the best of today\u2019s flamenco was gathered.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s impossible to describe it all. It was packed to the brim, around one thousand people in attendance, give or take a few. The sound quality was flawless, and the organization incredible, considering it was the first edition of a very ambitious festival. Perhaps a little too long for a public who mostly came from elsewhere and was more interested in flamenco than beaches. We didn\u2019t have a chance to even smell the famed tuna caught in these parts.<\/p>\n

We did enjoy the alegr\u00edas de C\u00e1diz<\/i> and the soleares de Alcal\u00e1<\/i> that Esteban Guerrero \u201cCaracolillo de C\u00e1diz<\/b>\u201d sang to break the fresh sunset breeze. It\u2019s high time that this cantaor<\/i>, who long ago achieved the category of master, becomes regularly featured in festivals and pe\u00f1as<\/i>, because he\u2019s overflowing with talent and wisdom.<\/p>\n

Regarding Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/b>, we like everything about him and nothing is wasted, just like in the gutting of tuna. There are no buler\u00edas por sole\u00e1<\/i> more typical of La Plazuela than his, and he pierced our souls many times singing por seguiriyas<\/i>, particularly when he took us from Porverita to the Santiago district, guided by the hand of Loco Mateo.<\/p>\n

The young Mar\u00eda Terremoto<\/b>, daughter and granddaughter of Fernandoes, caused a frenzy in the yard of La Chanca, the old cannery of Conil, with her fandangos<\/i> and her tientos tangos<\/i>. Yours truly really liked her buler\u00edas por sole\u00e1<\/i> where she was able to show off her great talent for cante<\/i>. Mar\u00eda\u2019s performance was followed by Carmen Herrera<\/b>, also from Jerez who danced superbly por fiesta<\/i> and por alegr\u00edas<\/i>, masterfully sung by Alfonso Carpio el Mijita de Jerez<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Before Pedro el Grana\u00edno<\/b> wrapped up this festival in La Chanca with superb alegr\u00edas<\/i> on the six and a half, the other Alonso, the kid, performed. I\u2019m not sure who I like better, the father or the son. Rancapino Chico<\/b>, who is just thirty years old, sang as always and as never before, surrendering to the emotion of singing for his father, who was the artist being honored that evening. Soleares de Mercedes la Sarneta<\/i> with the aroma of Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n, Aurelio\u2019s alegr\u00edas<\/i> and Torta\u2019s buler\u00edas<\/i>, the ones that go \u201cescucha, escucha, solo, me encuentro solo, debo de ser un solitario\u2026<\/i>\u201d (\u201clisten, listen, alone, I find myself alone, I must be a loner\u2026\u201d).<\/p>\n
