Not just because he\u2019s been the foremost <i>cantaor<\/i> of C\u00e1diz for many years, but also because of his total commitment and the splendor of his live performances. \u201c<i>David Palomar + Sexteto<\/i>\u201d, a production included in the series <i>Flamenco Patrimonio<\/i> (\u201dFlamenco Heritage\u201d) of the <i>Junta de Andalusia<\/i>\u2019s Culture Department, had the additional allure of including six of the best musicians in <i>arte flamenco<\/i> (six!).<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to create several summer festivals held in the old Roman Theaters of Andalusia, adding a touch of excellence to the musical production. The It\u00e1lica theater, located in Santiponce (Seville province), is perfectly suited for this, both for its fantastic acoustics and for its state of preservation. Looking at the lineup of musicians over the <i>pulpitum<\/i> surrounded by ten marble columns, with the half-moon reflected in the <i>orchestra<\/i> crescent, was enough to get the spectators\u2019 hearts pumping and the artists inspired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing what the Romans were able to do without cement, considering how hard is to build anything today\u201d, said David, greeting the spectators. He already had the public in his pocket, something he learned from his mentors, like Chano Lobato or Mariana Cornejo, whom he evoked the whole evening at every gesture. That was after a warm <i>nana<\/i> dedicated to his son, blessed vine, and a magnificent medley of <i>garrot\u00edn, cantes del Piyayo<\/i> and <i>tangos del Titi de Triana<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>seguiriyas<\/i> were somehow hurried and lacked the depth customary of this <i>cantaor<\/i> from C\u00e1diz. The one who achieved superb notes was <b>Juan Jos\u00e9 Alba<\/b>, who brought the darkest sounds of the ensemble from Chiclana. His <i>falseta de Javier Molina<\/i> earned <i>oles<\/i> and more <i>oles<\/i> from the public, so much so that David gave his all and saved face by singing Tom\u00e1s el Nitri\u2019s \u201c<i>Camino de Bollullos<\/i>\u201d. He then took us to the peak of his <i>cante<\/i> with the <i>soleares<\/i> of Ram\u00f3n Jarana, Paquirri and El Chozas de Jerez, which he performed with all his heart after the <i>tangos caeteros<\/i> of Ni\u00f1o del Mentidero and the slow <i>buler\u00edas<\/i> of Alfonso Gaspar, two of his role models.<\/p>\n<p>Then it was the turn of the tropical rhythms, as he announced to the public\u2019s delight. In those, David is unmatched. The transverse flute of <b>Diego Villegas<\/b> (Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda, 1987) called <i>por alegr\u00edas<\/i> and a touch of freshness was added by the voices of <b>Anabel Rivera<\/b> and <b>Roberto Ja\u00e9n<\/b>, who played hide-and-seek with his percussionist hands. David sang <i>canti\u00f1as de las Mirris<\/i> and the elegant figure of <b>Abel Harana<\/b> swept the 2000-year-old stage <i>a comp\u00e1s<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The intimate moment was provided by David and the violin of the Frenchman Alexis Lef\u00e8vre, as they whispered a <i>bolero<\/i> of Nelson Pinedo and then performed Sevillanas (<i>\u00a1flamenqu\u00edsimas!<\/i>) dedicated to Manolo Caracol, Lola Flores, Carmen Amaya and Camar\u00f3n de la Isla. All of this was seasoned by the soprano saxophone of Diego Villegas, who was amazing the whole evening.<\/p>\n<p>From there we got to two and a half hours of performance with <i>buler\u00edas, tangos carnavaleros, tanguillos de C\u00e1diz<\/i> and Chano Lobato\u2019s <i>rumba<\/i> \u201c<i>Cacharrito<\/i>\u201d. Then the king of <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i> from La Vi\u00f1a looked at the stands yearning for the approval of the spectators, who gave him their thumbs up.
