This <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> is small and charming, in need of a little help so it won\u2019t close down, as has happened with many other flamenco cultural associations in the capital of Seville. It doesn\u2019t have a president. Before last summer, it was open every day, but nowadays it only opens if there\u2019s a performance. As stated in the event\u2019s ad: cold drinks, one euro. Calamari tapas, two euros. Being welcomed at the door by Antonio Reyes, priceless.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also priceless being able to attend a recital of such high level in the company of fifty other great aficionados. How boring have theaters become these days. They want to open flamenco to the wider public. What can I say? <i>Cante<\/i> is truly enjoyed when we\u2019re able to make eye contact with the artists in a small venue. That\u2019s what <b>Mari \u00c1ngeles Carrasco<\/b>, director of the <b><i>Instituto Andaluz del Flamenco<\/i><\/b>, tells me: <i>pe\u00f1as<\/i> have existed since before we were born, they\u2019re the cornerstone, the launching pad of young artists, the places where they can get some experience before turning professional. \u201cMari \u00c1ngeles, how do you feel about being the guest of honor in this celebration of the 25 years of <i>Pe\u00f1a El Chozas<\/i>\u2019 Cultural Week? \u201cWell, as you can imagine, it\u2019s a great honor, but in fact it\u2019s an honor for the whole team who works behind the curtains, decisively promoting flamenco through agreements and subsidies.\u201d So, bring in the money, Mr. Instituto, because Pedro El Grana\u00edno will perform on Saturday, and someone has to pay for it.<\/p>\n<p>There he is, standing up, warming up with a single round of <i>martinetes<\/i>. Without missing a beat, he links it with a <i>zambra caracolera<\/i>, to the rhythm of a Gypsy hammer, and then comes a bit of a <i>Romance de Juan de Osuna<\/i>, with the master in full control, <i>de Huelva vino un jinete con los ojos de aceituna<\/i>. He\u2019s linking <i>tientos de Caracol<\/i> in a <i>zambra<\/i>. I love this guy, I really do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood evening, I\u2019ll sing in remembrance of my land, C\u00e1diz, Chiclana\u2026\u201d He sings his usual slow <i>alegr\u00edas<\/i>, evoking Camar\u00f3n and entering through the Bay of C\u00e1diz, nothing new here. Then comes the <i>tangos<\/i>, where he\u2019s king. Sweetness runs down his throat, contrasting with the variety of flavors coming out of the guitar of <b>Diego Amaya<\/b> in <i>falsetas<\/i> based on accords from Jerez. It wasn\u2019t one or two, but at least twenty dishes he served, covered with <i>oles<\/i>. The <i>cantaor<\/i> from Chiclana stretches the <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>, doing the impossible to keep the beat, as the guitarist from La Plazuela nails those same dark notes and our hearts get filled with joy. Tell me, tell me\u2026 There\u2019s Juan Villar, who always attends the recitals of the masters from Chiclana. <i>A tu vera, Rosa Mar\u00eda<\/i>. It seems like Antonio is really making an effort to change his repertoire, something we celebrate with joy.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for his <i>soleares<\/i>, where he mixes traditional lyrics with uncommon ones, linking a lot and making a great effort. The moment of truth arrives, as Diego Amaya\u2019s <i>toque<\/i> still reverberates, because this <i>palo<\/i> is music to die for. <i>A clavito y a canela<\/i>, the version of Manuel Torres. A frightening cry beats up our souls and I pray to Heavens. Just look at the people\u2019s faces!<\/p>\n<p>From there until the end, it\u2019s all pleasant and joyful. Slow <i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, as there are no <i>palmeros<\/i>. <i>Fandango de Vallejo por buler\u00edas<\/i>, unbeatable. A couple of <i>fandanguitos<\/i>. <i>Ole, ole<\/i>\u2026 And then a beer for one euro. One euro, and someone else almost grabbed mine.
