{"id":7676,"date":"2018-08-24T17:13:10","date_gmt":"2018-08-24T17:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/samuel-serrano-profeta-en-su-tierra\/"},"modified":"2019-02-16T14:26:23","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T13:26:23","slug":"samuel-serrano-profeta-en-su-tierra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/chronicles\/samuel-serrano-profeta-en-su-tierra\/","title":{"rendered":"Samuel Serrano, prophet in his own land"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Monday was the start of the Chipiona\u2019s 9th Cultural Week, honoring the singer Roc\u00edo Jurado, the most universal artist from that city of C\u00e1diz province. This event was held at Andalusia Square, across City Hall, which through its Culture Council organized this show together with <i>Asociaci\u00f3n RJ La m\u00e1s grande<\/i>. Admission was free, and half of Chipiona came to honor their great Roc\u00edo.<\/p>\n<p>This event consists of two very distinct parts. The first is a tribute to this singer from Chipiona, done by a great friend and admirer of her, the renowned fashion designer <b>Agust\u00edn del Moral<\/b> from the <i>Azabache<\/i> house. Agust\u00edn praised the memory of this artists from an emotional perspective and often shared his tears with the public, who responded with <i>ol\u00e9s<\/i> and applause. The local singer <b>Cintia Merino<\/b>, winner of a famous TV talent show, emulated \u201cThe Greatest\u201c with some of her top hits, such as \u201c<i>Con ruedas de molino<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>En el punto de partida<\/i>\u201d and \u201c<i>Qu\u00e9 no dar\u00eda yo por empezar de nuevo<\/i>\u201d, ending with Roc\u00edo\u2019s lyrics <i>por fandangos<\/i>. Cintia has a gifted voice, we shall keep an eye on her.<\/p>\n<p>The second part, well, we were expecting half of the public to get up and leave. Yet, no one moved from their seats. <b>Samuel Serrano<\/b> was coming to sing <i>flamenco jondo<\/i>, the authentic kind, and he\u2019s known to be a very good singer, besides being from Chipiona himself. Not only that, <b>Paco Cepero<\/b>, the great legend of Jerez\u2019s guitar, was going to accompany him.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I ever listened Samuel sing was about six years ago. That was in C\u00e1diz, in the final of the <i>Concurso Nacional de Cante por Alegr\u00edas<\/i>. He came out looking like a savage, with his long hair evoking a present-day Geronimo, and the crowd went wild with his warm-up <i>por seguiriya<\/i>. Those of us who were there still remember that piercing seguiriya, although it wasn\u2019t awarded any prize as a <i>cante libre<\/i>. Samuel didn\u2019t do well <i>por alegr\u00edas<\/i>, but even so he won the 2nd prize. Last Monday we were able to confirm that Samuel continues to excel <i>por seguiriyas<\/i>, and that his <i>alegr\u00edas<\/i> are much better than before. He sings the latter slowly, softly, until he runs out of <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>, with elegance and wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Serrano\u2019s <i>seguiriyas<\/i> by themselves are well worth the trip to Chipiona, enduring two loads of tributes if necessary. <i>Con la Virgen de Regla, estoy enojao, yo le he pe\u00edo la salud de mi mare, y no me la ha dao<\/i>. Just like that, with the melody of Paco la Luz, starting with an \u201c<i>ay<\/i>\u201d that got everyone holding to their seats, bracing for what was to come.<\/p>\n<p>Before that, the master Paco Cepero was accompanied by one of his disciples, the young guitarist from Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda <b>Paco Le\u00f3n<\/b>, opening the recital with his famous \u201c<i>Agua marina<\/i>\u201d, delighting the public. Then Samuel Serrano showed up, without his long mane, wearing an impeccable blue suit. They changed his image, of course, more commercial and all that. The public was enthralled as he sang Paco Cepero\u2019s tangos, and rumbas. Then came the martinetes, \u201c<i>La Plazuela est\u00e1 de luto, el alma la tiene rota<\/i>\u201d.
