It keeps on celebrating its <i>Fiesta de la Buler\u00eda<\/i>, created by Juan de la Plata and the <i>C\u00e1tedra de Flamencolog\u00eda<\/i> exactly 51 years ago, although it\u2019s now organized in a more modern way, adapting to the needs of the people. There is still fried fish available at the bars, some people keep their snacks in their pockets and the quality of <i>cante<\/i>, <i>baile<\/i> and <i>toque<\/i> is as good as ever, but there are differences from the old days. The festival no longer takes place in one single day, but in three, and the performances are limited to two and a half hours, instead of six hours. Now there are numbered, covered seats have replaced the bullfighting-style of grandstands. This edition started on Thursday (August 23) with the presentation of \u201c<i>R\u00edo de la Buler\u00eda<\/i>\u201d, a production directed by the famed screenwriter <b>Juan Herrera<\/b> and the musician <b>Curro Carrasco<\/b>, which intended (and achieved in great measure) to show the strength of flamenco generation after generation, with the Santiago district of Jerez portrayed as a mighty river reaching all corners of the world. To achieve this, Curro summoned <i>cantaores<\/i> not featured often in this Festival such as <b>Jua\u00f1ares<\/b>, <b>Sorderita<\/b> and <b>Antonio Agujetas Chico<\/b>, the three artists of greatest renown that evening, together with the <i>bailaora<\/i> <b>Gema Moneo<\/b>. Younger artists such as <b>Maloko<\/b> and <b>Enrique Remache<\/b> took part in this <i>fiesta<\/i>, as well as a well-thought, all-women cast led by <b>Felipa del Moreno<\/b>, <b>Lela Soto<\/b> and <b>Anabel Valencia<\/b>. The latter, from Lebrija, brought a <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i> which originated in the farms of the countryside where labourers from these two cities worked together. <b>Jos\u00e9 Valencia<\/b> added mastery in a dramatized show immersed in new technologies, where <b>Diego Carrasco<\/b> and <b>Tomasito<\/b> shone with their witticisms, true to their styles, leaving us all enthralled. There were also kids, many kids, such as <b>Triana Jero<\/b> and <b>Juan Dieguito Valencia Carrasco<\/b>, who sent the public high into orbit. About one thousand people attended, just like in the second day.<\/p>\n<p>The second session, on Friday, was more than special due to its symbolism. It celebrated 150 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan, which became established some years before the arrival of flamenco in the city of <b>Shoji Kojima<\/b>. This master from Japan headlined a first-class lineup with artists from both countries, portraying the unity that has existed between these two cultures since long ago and which grows stronger every year. Under the direction of <b>David Lagos<\/b> and <b>Javier Latorre<\/b>, we immersed ourselves in a world of passion, love and unity. Representing Jerez were Lagos, <b>Londro<\/b> and <b>Melchora Ortega<\/b>, three powerful voices which are increasingly popular, giving life to moments that were a bit too dense. From C\u00e1diz, <b>Miguel Rosendo<\/b> wasn\u2019t left behind. The <i>baile<\/i> of <b>Miguel \u00c1ngel Heredia<\/b> and <b>Andr\u00e9s Pe\u00f1a<\/b> had a lot of character, the former with more presence <i>por seguiriyas<\/i>, <i>rumbas<\/i> and <i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, and Pe\u00f1a more measured in <i>buler\u00edas por sole\u00e1<\/i>. Yet, both of them excelled. However, the highlight of the evening was high level of the Japanese artists, <b>Hiroki Sato<\/b>, <b>Shiho Morita<\/b>, <b>Mayumi Kagita<\/b> and the <i>cantaora<\/i> <b>Yuka Imaeda<\/b>, who earned the highest acclaim that evening. The <i>baile<\/i>s were carefully performed, stylized and having a high technical level. Yuka sang <i>romances, corridos<\/i>, and left us speechless. <b>Fernando de la Morena<\/b>, with his <i>cante a comp\u00e1s<\/i>, although somehow weaker that usual, and the <i>bailes<\/i> of <b>El Zorri<\/b> and <b>Juana Carrasco<\/b> provided the vintage touch. The guitars of <b>Alfredo Lagos<\/b>, <b>Jos\u00e9 G\u00e1lvez<\/b> and <b>Javier Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez<\/b> were superb.<\/p>\n<p>The last day, Saturday, August 25, was a tribute to Manuel Moneo. It was a complicated day, as it would include the top five <i>cantaores<\/i> of Jerez in the same lineup, racing against time and having emotion as the driving force of the performance. Yet, <b>Manuela Carpio<\/b> was there to make anything possible and to get the show running smoothly. That explains the initial round <i>por martinetes<\/i> by <b>Barrullo<\/b>, <b>Luis Moneo<\/b>, <b>Macanita<\/b>, <b>Luis El Zambo<\/b> and <b>Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/b>. We all cried remembering Moneo, that evening of his. One after another, selected <i>cantes<\/i> were performed, mostly <i>sole\u00e1s<\/i> and <i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, but also <i>seguiriyas<\/i>. Jerez is the land of those <i>cantes<\/i>, there\u2019s no denying. Every and each of the <i>cantaores<\/i> were beyond great, being accompanied by <b>Diego del Morao<\/b>, <b>Manuel Valencia<\/b>, <b>Juan Manuel Moneo<\/b> and <b>Miguel Salado<\/b>. Four guitarists representative of the best moment in Jerez\u2019s flamenco guitar. The second part of the evening was more focused on <i>baile<\/i>, with Manuela Carpio <i>por sole\u00e1<\/i>, displaying her pure, tireless Gyspy fury, and a priceless <i>fin de fiesta<\/i>, remembering those years when the <i>Fiesta de la Buler\u00eda<\/i> was exactly this, a \u201cparty of the people\u201d. <b>Fernando Soto<\/b>, <b>El Bo<\/b>, <b>Diego de la Margara<\/b>, <b>Pepe Torres<\/b>, <b>Carmen Ledesma<\/b> and <b>El Torombo<\/b> topped this gala which represented a new era in this festival, started a few years ago and now becoming consolidated as attested by the public\u2019s attendance, about four thousand people in those three days.<strong>Juan Herrera<\/strong><strong>Curro
