The Festival de Cante Flamenco \u201cEl B\u00facaro\u201d <\/strong><\/em>traditionally closes the season of flamenco festivals in the province of Seville. For a few years it has been taking place at Hacienda Santa Cruz<\/em>, the old sugar factory located next to the railway station, which became the nucleus of San Jos\u00e9, a district in the municipality of La Rinconada. Thirty-five editions attest to its quality, and that of its aficionados, who know how to enjoy and listen to traditional cante jondo<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s a b\u00facaro<\/em>, dad?\u201d, asks a kid with big eyes who doesn\u2019t take his eyes off Antonio Carri\u00f3n\u2019s guitar. \u201cIt\u2019s a clay vase used to keep the water fresh in the field. Farm stuff, you won\u2019t see any in the city\u201d. Thirteen kilometers away, the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla<\/em> attempts to fill up wells and puddles, pile up pitchers and jugs, something to do with parity, apparently. At the Bienal de Flamenco<\/em> they don\u2019t know what a b\u00facaro<\/em> is, either.<\/p>\n

On stage comes the spring water we all shall drink. It\u2019s Jos\u00e9 Antonio Carri\u00f3n S\u00e1nchez \u201cCarri\u00f3n de Mairena\u201d<\/em><\/strong>, born in Mairena eighty-six years ago. He is the father of the evening host, the guitarist Antonio Carri\u00f3n. Nephew of Cancuna, first cousin of Cascabel de Mairena and Ni\u00f1o Segundo, that blessed cantaor of Mairena who served wine por sole\u00e1<\/em> on Castilla street. With his white hat and his face devoid of any wrinkles, he came to the festival to say farewell to cante<\/em>., leaving us the fresh water of his soleares:<\/p>\n

Y amanec\u00ed esta ma\u00f1ana<\/em>
\na pedirle al Nazareno<\/em>
\nque me quiera esta gitana.<\/em><\/p>\n

I woke up this morning<\/em>
\nAsking the Nazarene<\/em>

After the tribute to Carri\u00f3n, by his granddaughters, the palmeras<\/i> Concha and Mar\u00eda Carri\u00f3n, and by La Rinconada City Council and Seville\u2019s Provincial Council (long life to the public administrators who spare some money for flamenco), a big name of cante<\/i> climbs on stage. It\u2019s Alfredo Tejada<\/b>, who comes with his L\u00e1mpara Minera<\/i> award lighting up his voice.<\/p>\n

From M\u00e1laga, although settled in Granada since he was ten years old, Alfredo left his shirt in rags after he sang the sole\u00e1 de La Roezna<\/i>, closing as Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula in the style of Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n. He did it with the guitar bridge on eight, as Antonio Carri\u00f3n played on his left, in a little space where hardly a child would fit. Before that, Alfredo had shown his superb skill por canti\u00f1as<\/i>, tientos<\/i> with traditional lyrics, very well done in his own style, and the lyrics of Enrique Morente\u2019s La leyenda del tiempo<\/i>, finishing the session with a round of tangos by that master from Granada. Then, por buler\u00edas<\/i>, he came to Santiago and left by San Miguel without stopping on Porvera street, \u201cwithout signing a document\u201d and \u201cwith love broken and worn out\u201d, as the lyrics of Fernanda and Bernanda go.<\/p>\n

The baile<\/i> of the young Isaac Tovar<\/b>, from La Rinconada (who was a pleasant surprise for the presenter of the festival, Manuel Boh\u00f3rquez, as he \u201cdressed like a bailaor<\/i>, something very unusual these days\u201d) swiped the dust off the stage before and after the intermission. He did well por alegr\u00edas<\/i>, accompanied by the cante<\/i> of Juan Mairena, and was even better por sole\u00e1<\/i>, where he gifted us with his beautiful postures and an elegance that reminded us of a bygone era.<\/p>\n

We could sense the expectation when it was announced, around 2 AM, that the next performer would be David Palomar<\/b>, the unquestionable king of the cante<\/i> of C\u00e1diz. David knows how to own the stage from his chair, to which he seems attached by an invisible elastic band, as he tries to get up at the end of each verse por alegr\u00edas<\/i>. There is joy in his face, reflected in the public, when he remembers Chano Lobato, La Perla and his teacher Mariana Cornejo. His tanguillos de C\u00e1diz<\/i> are impressive, unparalleled nowadays. And last night he managed to change his smirk when he nailed solemnity to the chilling scream of the seguiriya<\/i>, I don\u2019t know how I came up with such simile.<\/p>\n

And when it seemed that the night could only decline, with so many pinches with oles, and so much sugar candy, in short, so much fresh water coming out of the steep vase, come to palacia with another Mining Lamp, oh, my love , with a guitarist from San jose. They are Miguel Ortega <\/strong> Y Manolito Herrera <\/strong> , respectively. When they finished the series of soleares apol\u00e1s, server had already run out of plasters.
