Photos: Agust\u00edn Rodr\u00edguez Mart\u00ednez<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\nThe <i>Pe\u00f1a Flamenca \u201c<b>Torres Macarena<\/b>\u201d<\/i> is located in the center of Seville\u2019s Macarena district, originally a settlement outside the city walls which merged into four and a half streets across the Macarena gate, next to the <i>Cinco Llagas<\/i> hospital, which is now the seat of Andalusia\u2019s Parliament. Located on Torrijano street, it almost disappeared a few years ago, as a new neighbour, an enemy of flamenco, insisted on closing it down again and again, because this <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> apparently lacked a license for live music performances. Just think about it, on Torrijano street, the birthplace of no other than Pepe Pinto, who sang fandangos there with El Carbonerillo in his childhood. In front of that <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> lived and died the great Manolo Fregenal. Just imagine.<\/p>\n<p>This venue has existed for forty-four years, the same age of <b>Perico el Pa\u00f1ero<\/b>. Jos\u00e9 L\u00e9rida L\u00f3pez, born in Algeciras in 1974, has the surname of an old lineage of blacksmiths from Triana. His grandfather, Jos\u00e9 L\u00e9rida Cruz, a great flamenco aficionado, reportedly sold cloths (<i>pa\u00f1os<\/i>) for a living in Camas before he moved to Campo de Gibraltar and married Mar\u00eda Cort\u00e9s Cort\u00e9s, from Algeciras, who was a great singer of <i>seguiriyas<\/i>. The courtyard of the <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> is filled with members sitting around tables overflowing with food, and the buffet offers countless glasses of <i>manzanilla<\/i> in bubbly expectation. \u201cHave you ever seen performing live?\u201d, \u201cI did once, but on that occasion he was so-so\u201d. This <i>cantaor<\/i> from Algeciras is great when he\u2019s inspired. Many people compare him with the great Manuel Torres, you know\u2026<\/p>\n<p>As soon as he warms up <b>por sole\u00e1<\/b>, we realize that this evening he\u2019s in top shape. The guitar of Antonio Carri\u00f3n gathers the first cheers on the venerable boards of Torres Macarena. There are no microphones, as it should be. Here, the stage is a terrifying isthmus surrounded by demanding aficionados on all sides except one. On that 6-feet vessel Perico gets started with <i>soleares<\/i> sewn into his heart. Juan Talega, La Andonda, Juaniqu\u00ed\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i>Tengo pozo en mi casa<br \/>\ny ag\u00fcita no pueo coger<br \/>\nporque la soga no alcanza<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I have a well at home<br \/>\nBut I can\u2019t get any water<br \/>\nBecause the rope is too short<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Antonio Carri\u00f3n<\/b>\u2018s guitar summons a mourning <i><b>por seguiriya<\/b><\/i>. The religious silence that characterizes the aficionados of this <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> gives way to a deluge of <i>oles<\/i>. Very nice, Antonio, it\u2019s such a pleasure listening to you. Perico bends and unfolds the <i>seguiriya de Juanelo<\/i>, the one about the little cups of broth (\u201c<i>las tacitas de caldo<\/i>\u201d), leaving the public in the raw. He searches his repertoire and takes out a set of nuances. Juanito Mojama and Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n, but sung in his own style, without copying, creating as he goes.<\/p>\n<p>Next come some <i><b>fandangos<\/b><\/i> to settle the venue. He starts by Huelva, followed by Pepe Pinto, takes the first left by Rafael el Tuerto, and then I get lost. It\u2019s a challenge for yours truly, because Perico adds new nuances to the old melodies. This one sounds like El Carbonerillo, wait, no, that was recorded by Isabelita de Jerez, \u201c<i>ella es buena y volver\u00e1<\/i>\u201d. This one is that of Manuel Torre or Dolores la Parrala.<\/p>\n<p>After the snacks we get back <i>a comp\u00e1s<\/i>. The slow <b>tangos<\/b> of Enrique El Mellizo are spectacular, overflowing wit the flour of Antonio Mairena and eggs from the family tree. Carri\u00f3n\u2019s toque reaches its peak here. Then comes the <i><b>buler\u00edas por sole\u00e1<\/b><\/i>, where Perico sampled all the stars of Jerez, the Pav\u00f3n family and also his dear Antonio Mairena. He even gave us a playful wink singing the <i>buler\u00edas<\/i> of Rosal\u00eda. Rosal\u00eda de Triana, not the other one.<\/p>\n<p>Then it was time for <i>buler\u00edas cortas de Jerez<\/i>, which came out perfect, with <i>comp\u00e1s<\/i> to spare. After so much emotion, we were thankful for his stroll by C\u00e1diz, from La Perla to Juan Villar. This 6-foot tall Gypsy then stood up and the crowd went wild. The skinny, awkward guy wearing the black suit has the gift of flamenco in the way he moves. Look how he collects himself, how he breaks the air, and the incredible footwork before the sudden stop. He looks at people\u2019s faces.
