P\u00e9rez. Seville, October 29, 2018. Photos by Carmelo Camino. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>A recital of <i>cante jondo<\/i> on a Sunday at 1 PM. I\u2019m really liking this flamenco during the day thing, it\u2019s like Seville\u2019s Fair during the day, not as tiresome as the late-night performances, and I even have time to attend the noon mass. Tripe and chickpea tapas. Flamenco aficionados gather at the bar, ticket on hand. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen this kid performing live\u201d, \u201cYou\u2019ll be amazed\u201d. Some members of the <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> get on their seats and others remain standing, leaning against the door.<\/p>\n<p>First comes the opening ceremony (the third one in a short time), of the new venue of the <i>Pe\u00f1a Cultural Flamenca<\/i> of Bormujos, an important town in Seville\u2019s Aljarafe district. This <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> is named after the veteran flamenco critic <b>Miguel Acal<\/b>, journalist from Granada who grew up and lived in Bormujos until his sad passing in 2002. His widow Nani was there, and she read an unpublished and emotional piece by her late husband about flamenco, his great passion. Ending with his trademark \u201c<i>Salud y libertad<\/i>\u201d (\u201cHealth and freedom\u201d) the sign-off words in all of his radio shows, we got the goosebumps which stayed with us for the whole recital.<\/p>\n<p>It was a real a privilege watching this scrawny kid of eighteen in an oversized suit climbing on the stage in front of Joselito de Pura, the most robust guitarist from Chiclana de la Frontera. It\u2019s a very small <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>. \u201cPlease, take those mics away\u2026\u201d. All of us are already captivated, particularly the ladies. I don\u2019t mean to be sexist, but Alonso N\u00fa\u00f1ez Heredia \u201c<b>El Purili<\/b>\u201d (born in La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n in 2000) has been blessed with grace and angel, and that makes him quite handsome, I can\u2019t deny it.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso has been an artist since he was a child. He sits down and the public goes silent. He warms up with the depth of Antonio Mairena, his <i>lerele lele<\/i> evoking C\u00e1diz and Caracol, with a nod to Juan Talega. He then sets forth to Mairena\u2019s Plaza de las Flores and comes back by the hand of La Andonda, <i>toma esa escalerita de vidrio, por una suben las penas, ay, por otra baja el alivio<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>After the explosion of joy by those aficionados who can\u2019t quite believe what they\u2019re listening to, comes the guitar of <b>Joselito de Pura<\/b> (born in Chiclana de la Frontera in 1987), who by chance has the same surnames as Alonso. Although he has the skill of a concert guitarist, as we could attest by listening to his album \u201c<i>De Chiclana a la Carboner\u00eda<\/i>\u201d, released last year, he\u2019s the dream accompanist for any start of <i>cante<\/i>. He\u2019s always attentive, always waiting and ready, and has that sound between Jerez and and Mor\u00f3n which moves us at each note. He continues <i>por sole\u00e1<\/i>, in a style between C\u00e1diz and Alcal\u00e1. The people on first row can barely handle it.<\/p>\n<p>The broth <i>por seguiriyas<\/i> is boiling. Alonso becomes a gloomy man like an evening storm. \u201cManuela, my dear, he\u2019s so good in the lower notes\u201d, \u201cIn the medium notes too\u201d, \u201cI know, I know, but I really like his low notes\u201d. With a shriek that would break the hardest of hearts, it feels as if T\u00edo Jos\u00e9 de Paula himself had appeared in the room, and <i>oles<\/i> bounce up and down everywhere. \u201cI told you that you\u2019d be amazed\u201d, \u201cTrue, but all he does is imitate Antonio Mairena, not a good model for a kid so young\u201d. After the wonderful break given by Joselito\u2019s guitar, Alonso performs his version of Tom\u00e1s El Nitri and Antonio\u2019s \u201c<i>Huye ust\u00e9 pa all\u00e1<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019ll sing a little <i>por buler\u00edas<\/i>\u201d. The public is overwhelmed with joy, because after showing that he can handle the rhythm of the <i>buler\u00edas cortas<\/i> of C\u00e1diz and Jerez and demonstrating that he knows by heart all the recordings of Antonio Mairena, Alonso stands up unexpectedly, showering us with grace from his huge hands <i>a comp\u00e1s<\/i> of the <i>oles<\/i> from the public. He should make an effort to stop trying to imitate Perico El Pa\u00f1ero, his idol among the living <i>cantaores<\/i>, from whom he copies even the way he dresses. Yet, at that age many great artists have imitated their idols and later developed their own personality.<\/p>\n<p>Before finishing the recital, some <i>fandangos<\/i>, completely captivating the demanding public.
