{"id":7518,"date":"2019-02-02T23:30:45","date_gmt":"2019-02-02T22:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/?p=7518"},"modified":"2019-02-09T23:33:57","modified_gmt":"2019-02-09T22:33:57","slug":"marcelo-sousa-beyond-orthodoxy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/chronicles\/marcelo-sousa-beyond-orthodoxy\/","title":{"rendered":"Marcelo Sousa, beyond orthodoxy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> in Seville that often flies under the radar of the wider public: the <b><i>Tertulia Flamenca Jumoza 3<\/i><\/b>, in the Parque Alcosa neighborhood. What kind of name is that? \u201cWell, I\u2019ll tell you the story: in Marchena there was a <i>tertulia<\/i> [cultural club] that was called <i>jumoza<\/i> [<i>smokey<\/i>] because of a chimney it had, which smoked everywhere except by the top\u2026 That\u2019s where it took its name from, as most of the founders of this <i>pe\u00f1a<\/i> were from Marchena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among <i>cabales<\/i>, the authentic <i>gourmets<\/i> of <i>cante jondo<\/i>, talking about <b>Marcelo Sousa<\/b> (born in Guillena, Seville province, in 1949) is talking about the very best. Just short of his 70th birthday, after a career spanning several decades, he\u2019s able to sing for two hours without missing a beat. He\u2019s what we call <i>orthodox<\/i>: faithful to traditional <i>cante<\/i>, deep and <i>largo<\/i>, that is, well versed and skilled in all flamenco <i>palos<\/i>. He\u2019s a <i>mairenista<\/i>: a disciple of Antonio Mairena (ay!), at a time when such thing is frowned upon. \u201cWho? I\u2019ve never heard of him\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a pity he\u2019s not well-known. When was the last time we heard <i>palos<\/i> such as <b><i>rosas<\/i><\/b>, <b><i>arbore\u00e1s<\/i><\/b>, <b><i>mirabr\u00e1s<\/i><\/b>, the <b><i>canti\u00f1as<\/i><\/b> of Luisa Butr\u00f3n, of Sanl\u00facar, of Los Puertos; or a <b><i>tirana<\/i><\/b>, or the <b><i>jotilla<\/i><\/b> of Perico el Guitarrito immortalized by the great Ni\u00f1a de los Peines:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Dile si la ves pasar,<br \/>\ndile, pero muy bajito,<br \/>\ndile que estoy medio loco,<br \/>\nloco, loquito perd\u00edo.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Marcelo says: \u201cYou can ask me whatever you want, except money. I\u2019ve come with this kid, <b>Jos\u00e9 Luis Scott<\/b> (b. Seville, 1972) who plays the guitar amazingly, and whom I love like a son\u201d. Luis plays the guitar wonderfully indeed, he has the traditional <i>toque<\/i> of the Seville school, a splendid rhythm and makes sounds with his guitar that leaves us dumbfounded.<\/p>\n<p>Superb <b><i>tientos<\/i><\/b>, lots of <i><b>tangos<\/b> trianeros de comp\u00e1s<\/i>. Everything happens naturally, and yet we\u2019re all amazed. Now a <b><i>guajira<\/i><\/b>, with Marcelo making good use of his voice and his volume control, his chest being like a volcano from which gets a <i>pellizco<\/i> whenever he has to. When he sings the <b><i>mariana<\/i><\/b> finished off by his <i>Tangos a Sevilla<\/i>, we\u2019ve already run out of <i>oles<\/i>. Hard to believe that this man still has to make a living singing in contests of <i>cante<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>After the snacks, the best is still to come. \u201cAre you kidding me, doesn\u2019t this man ever get tired?\u201d It\u2019s time for the <b><i>soleares<\/i><\/b>, so good, all with his own lyrics perfectly adapted to the styles of Alcal\u00e1 and Triana. Marcelo has a natural voice, strong like a torrent, which for this <i>palo<\/i> is kind of excessive. Yet, it\u2019s perfectly suitable for <b><i>seguiriyas<\/i><\/b>, and he sings like El Nitri and Antonio Mairena in one sitting. What a heck of a voice you have, master! In between, some exquisite tremolos <i>por <b>malague\u00f1as<\/b><\/i> bring us peace once again, as if we were enjoying a walk in Lucena in the company of El Ni\u00f1o de Cabra and Dolores de la Huerta.
