It was a night of angels in Alcal\u00e1 de Guada\u00edra, the Alcal\u00e1 of the\u00a0Gordos<\/i>and of the\u00a0La Paula<\/i>, the city with the aroma of freshly baked bread in the early mornings. Alcal\u00e1 covered itself with a blanket of chilly fog, but the hot embers still glowed in its famous\u00a0pe\u00f1a, \u201cLa Sole\u00e1 de Alcal\u00e1\u201d<\/i>warming everyone inside. There awaited good aficionados, friends who would follow the faintest track of flamenco. Look, that\u2019s\u00a0Mario de Alcal\u00e1<\/b>, a living legend who still has a lot to teach; and there is the young\u00a0Antonio Hermos\u00edn<\/b>, who seems to have fallen into a cauldron of the\u00a0soleares panaderas<\/i>\u00a0when he was a child, and who can tell the subtle differences in the\u00a0cantes<\/i>\u00a0of Joaqu\u00edn el de la Paula, Enrique and Manolito de Mar\u00eda just by knocking on a table with his knuckles\u2026<\/p>\n

Juan Ruiz Coronel\u00a0\u201cCoronel Chico\u201d<\/b>\u00a0(born in Linares in 1984), winner in 2017 of the Second Group in the 25th\u00a0Concurso Nacional de Cante Flamenco \u201cSole\u00e1 de Alcal\u00e1\u201d<\/i>, came to town. At 33 years old, the age of you-know-who, he\u2019s not yet able to walk on water and isn\u2019t planning to expell anyone from the temple, but he does marvels\u00a0por tarantas<\/i>, fluttering hints of jasmine and honey with his Gypsy throat, and uttering dark notes which could bring the dead back to life.<\/p>\n

He was joined by the guitar of\u00a0Juan Manuel Flores<\/b>\u00a0(born in Alcal\u00e1 de Guada\u00edra in 1963), who is without a doubt the best guitarist which this land of bakers has produced. His strumming pierces our souls, either for the sounds it makes of for its moments of silence. He brought a guitar which was given to him by an adopted alcalare\u00f1o: Ni\u00f1o El\u00edas, no less.<\/p>\n

Coronel didn\u2019t have a good start with the\u00a0caracoles de Chac\u00f3n<\/i>, although when he got to the\u00a0preg\u00f3n<\/i>, people in the audience were already dipping their bread in the spicy and well-prepared soup. He then soared\u00a0por malague\u00f1as<\/i>, those of Chato de las Ventas and a very personal version of the\u00a0chica del Mellizo<\/i>\u00a0which got some people off their seats. His\u00a0soleares<\/i>\u00a0were erratic, though, and a bit strident in some verses, although he revealed a deep understanding of this\u00a0palo<\/i>.<\/p>\n

His great talent sometimes made him go too high (\u201cPut it on the sixth, Juan\u201d), but when he came down to the medium and low notes, with his very unique heartfelt way of singing, the\u00a0duendes<\/i>\u00a0came all the way down to the back of his chair. In\u00a0tarantas<\/i>, those of his grandfather Francisco Coronel Melero\u00a0Coronel de Linares<\/b>, he caused quite a stir, like people say. And he was good, really good,\u00a0por seguiriyas<\/i>, enough said. When he sang his personal\u00a0fandango<\/i>, and those of El Chocolate, we no longer had any emotions left inside, not even for the\u00a0buler\u00eda de Lebrija<\/i>\u00a0and the\u00a0buler\u00edas<\/i>\u00a0of Antonio EL Chaqueta. Juan Coronel Chico had proven himself next to the bust of the great Joaqu\u00edn,\u00a0el de la Paula<\/i>. Sitting by the bar, the presidents of several\u00a0pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0took note, mindful of their programming roster.<\/p>\n
