Well, you know, they say 2, but it\u2019s really 2:30 or 2:45. What an un-flamenco time, lunchtime. Have a glass of wine and some\u00a0<i>tapas<\/i>\u00a0with your stew, and you\u2019ll see that the duendes don\u2019t care about the clock, but only about\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, guitar and art.<\/p>\n<p>What about some good bread, Paco? These winter stews always go well with\u00a0<i>migaj\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0bread. I look after the bread. The thing is that Francisco Morillo Castro,\u00a0<b>Paco Morillo<\/b>\u00a0(born in 1974) is a baker by trade. Baker, not from Alcal\u00e1, but from Mairena del Alcor, the hometown of Antonio Mairena, recipient of the famed Golden Key of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, and of all his family: Curro, Manuel and the newer generation, such as Fernando Mairena and Fernando Porrito\u2026 Mairena is also the hometown of Calixto S\u00e1nchez, Antonio\u2019s great supporter and friend.<\/p>\n<p>The sourdough bread requires time and patience. It\u2019s made of just flour and water, without any added yeasts, and it\u2019s as good in the morning as in the evening, as it doesn\u2019t get hard or chewy. Either at two in the afternoon or in the early morning, Paco Morillo kneads breads and\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, as the name of his first album proclaimed, back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Paco is joined by the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u2019s official guitarist, Marcos Serrato (born in Dos Hermanas in 1991), who is a conservatory musician and twice the runner-up for the coveted\u00a0<i>Bord\u00f3n Minero<\/i>\u00a0award at the La Uni\u00f3n flamenco festival. As soon as his right hand gets free, the air gets filled with tremolos, while his left hand takes the pulse of the guitar\u2019s neck with the poise of a concertist. An spontaneous ovation interrupts the prelude of the\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a<\/i>, establishing a solid bond between the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and his accompanist, a complicity which lasts the whole recital.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Mairena then soars with his natural voice. \u201c<i>Malague\u00f1a de Calixto S\u00e1nchez y malague\u00f1a de Antonio Mairena<\/i>\u201d, announces Francisco, meaning to honor his admired artists with the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0of La Trini and Enrique El Mellizo, closing with a beautiful\u00a0<i>jabera<\/i>, an \u201c<i>abandolao de Paco Moya<\/i>\u201d, points out the master baker.<\/p>\n<p>It gets even better with the\u00a0<i>tientos de Mairena<\/i>, and Paco continues steady, with Serrano\u2019s guitar focused on his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>:<\/p>\n<p><i>Si yo pudiera borrar<br \/>\nlas besanas y los linderos,<br \/>\npondr\u00eda una raya en el mar,<br \/>\ny har\u00eda otro mundo nuevo.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Paco Morillo<\/b>\u00a0has a very unique and personal way of singing, approaching the verses by throwing to the sky his powerful and well-projected voice, and then retreating to a sorrowful and tender half-voice where he cradles the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0comfortably at ease. That\u2019s when he creates his best\u00a0<i>pellizcos<\/i>\u00a0and when he better connects with his audience.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as Paco glows and everything seems complete, Marcos comes up with his\u00a0<i>falsetas por seguiriyas<\/i>, with hints of Melchor and Ni\u00f1o Ricardo. The\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0feels at ease on stage, better than ever, better than when he won the\u00a0<i>Antonio Mairena<\/i>\u00a0prize in his hometown seven years ago, something that few now remember. That village should be more mindful of the excellent bunch of young\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in has nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>seguiriya<\/i>\u00a0is his\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>, we can tell. It shows that Paco has been long kneading the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0of El Nitri and T\u00edo Jos\u00e9 de Paula. As the recital wraps up, Francisco offers his truth with the\u00a0<i>cabal de Antonio Mairena<\/i>, his throat warm and devoid of\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>, finishing with a wonderful rendition of\u00a0<i>El Polo<\/i>, \u201cthat\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0that should be sung now and then, lest we forget it\u201d, he says.
