The first step was to write down the\u00a0pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u2019s by-laws, something complicated since it was the first association of its kind in that region, besides the fact that the government hadn\u2019t yet established guidelines for such entities (although it was the source of plenty of obstacles and difficulties). Once this non-profit flamenco organization became legally established, it was time to seek a physical venue, which at first was located at the Pelir\u00f3n neighborhood, but soon moved to another address in Estancia Barrera, which became one of those places of obligatory pilgrimage for artists, aficionados and the new breed of\u00a0pe\u00f1istas<\/i>\u00a0who passed by. Located next to T\u00edo Juane\u2019s metal workshop,\u00a0Los Cern\u00edcalos<\/i>\u00a0started taking its first steps by hosting Antonio Mairena and other artists from the families of Agujetas, Moneo, Carpio and T\u00edo Borrico.<\/p>\n
Anto\u00f1\u00edn, as Antonio Ben\u00edtez is affectionately known, acknowledges having committed his life to the\u00a0pe\u00f1a<\/i>: \u201cWe planned to take artists from Jerez to flamenco contests in other towns, so they could win some prizes and money. We organized recitals and we established an international guitar festival in 1972, plus a street festival of\u00a0saetas<\/i>\u00a0during Holy Week. We also managed to record the flamenco album\u00a0Nueva Frontera del Cante<\/i>, in 1974\u201d. Nowadays, this entity is led by Jes\u00fas Atienza, Ben\u00edtez\u2019s son-in-law, who continues to work to preserve and enhance the history of this\u00a0pe\u00f1a<\/i>, now located at Sancho Vizca\u00edno street, in the heart of the San Miguel neighborhood.<\/p>\n
To start celebrating such special anniversary, a schedule featuring three first-class events has been announced. The first one, by Seville\u2019s guitarist Rafael Riqueni, will take place on February 3. With this recital, the\u00a0pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0wants to highlight its bond with the world of flamenco guitar and celebrate its renowned guitar contests, even as they haven\u2019t been held in the last few years due to financial limitations. This performance will take place at 9:30 PM, although we must point out that entry to the venue will be reserved for members and special guests. The following week, on February 10, Elu de Jerez will take the center stage. Elo\u00edsa (Elu) Jim\u00e9nez, the sister of\u00a0cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Salmonete, started her career at this\u00a0pe\u00f1a<\/i>, and now, over twenty years later, she\u2019ll be back \u201cfull of expectations, looking forward for the duendes to come out, and to feel at ease with my people in my neighborhood\u201d, as she stated at the press conference held at the Gonz\u00e1lez Byass cellars. She\u2019ll be joined at the guitar by Domingo Rubichi.<\/p>\n
The last of these three performances will be by Alonso N\u00fa\u00f1ez Fern\u00e1ndez as special guest. He\u2019s the\u00a0cantaor<\/i>with the tightest schedule nowadays, and he\u2019s acclaimed wherever he goes, yet he would not pass the opportunity to perform for the first time on the stage of this\u00a0pe\u00f1a<\/i>. He\u2019s scheduled for February 17 and he\u2019ll be joined by Antonio Higuero at the guitar and by Jos\u00e9 Rubichi and Manuel Cantarote at\u00a0palmas<\/i>. These events will be presented by Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Casta\u00f1o.<\/p>\n
