February 16, 2018 (photos: cienxcienflamenco)<\/p>\n<p>The bells in the\u00a0<i>Giraldilla<\/i>\u00a0tower of Lebrija ran the Angelus, at the\u00a0<i>sixth<\/i>\u00a0hour of that wintery Sunday, and the souls in white in the\u00a0<i>Salones Diego de Ojo<\/i>\u00a0could be heard, soon to be followed by darker sounds. It\u2019s a tribute to the great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Francisco Carrasco Carrasco,\u00a0<b>Curro Malena<\/b>, as his children wanted to honor him seven years after that night in February when Juan Pe\u00f1a\u00a0<i>El Lebrijano<\/i>\u00a0and Miguel Poveda, together with Dorantes and Manuela Carrasco, put Seville\u2019s Lope de Vega theater upside down, on occasion of Curro being awarded of the title \u201c<i>Favoured Son of Lebrija<\/i>\u201d and bestowed the city\u2019s Gold Medal.<\/p>\n<p>Three in the afternoon, the\u00a0<i>ninth<\/i>\u00a0hour, the hour of mercy. El Funi hasn\u2019t showed up, neither has Antonio Reyes, but it doesn\u2019t matter, as the buffet room in the Gonz\u00e1lez Palacios cellar is filled with artists, a sure sign that this is a big occasion.<\/p>\n<p>A true feast of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, a\u00a0<i>jart\u00e1<\/i>, like people say here. Not just any\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, but the good kind, filled with truth in the heart and sorrow in the throat, without\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>, because colleagues can\u2019t be fooled. They have come from far and wide: Seville, Los Palacios, Utrera, Jerez, Guillena, Puebla de Cazalla, to be where friends should be in hard times. The artists of Lebrija are missing, only In\u00e9s Bac\u00e1n is around, but that\u2019s enough for me. It\u2019s due to the carnival celebrations in C\u00e1diz, she says. Ah, OK.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to write a review about six hours of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Sitting behind me is\u00a0<b>Jos\u00e9 de la Tomasa<\/b>, who has shrunk my heart with his\u00a0<i>taranta de Manuel Torre<\/i>\u00a0and some personal\u00a0<i>tarantos<\/i>\u00a0which would open a mine in the soul with one single verse. He has sung like never before, perhaps spurred because minutes earlier his 18-year-old grandson\u00a0<b>Manuel<\/b>\u00a0performed accompanied at the guitar by the very young\u00a0<b>David de Arahal<\/b>. \u201cYour grandson has hiked the price of fish for you!\u201d, joked Manuel Curao with the Tomasa patriarch. In fact, after a superb performance by\u00a0<b>Manuel Reyes<\/b>\u00a0<i>por sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>por seguiriyas<\/i>, the great-grandson of\u00a0<i>Pies de Plomo<\/i>\u00a0got a standing ovation with a round of\u00a0<i>soleares de Alcal\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0which will remain for a long time in the memory of those present.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the memory of the attendees will remain the\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0by the only artist from Lebrija (besides the Malena family), the great\u00a0<b>In\u00e9s Bac\u00e1n<\/b>, who sang until exhaustion, to the very limit of her abilities.
