It can be felt in the most unexpected corners and is the protagonist in all traditional celebrations. While in the Christmas season\u00a0<i>villancicos por buler\u00edas<\/i>can be heard, and during the city\u2019s\u00a0<i>feria<\/i>\u00a0the splendor of the spontaneous\u00a0<i>juergas<\/i>\u00a0is reborn, during the Holy Week flamencos pay homage to the\u00a0<i>saeta<\/i>. To the\u00a0<i>saeta por seguiriyas<\/i>, to be precise.<\/p>\n<p>It would also be fair to highlight the essential role of the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/i>\u00a0when it comes to promote the\u00a0<i>arte jondo<\/i>\u00a0year-round, preserving certain traditions which define the city\u2019s singularity. The\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Buena Gente<\/i>\u00a0has once again presented its Lent season programming focused on the\u00a0<i>saeta<\/i>, the \u201csoundtrack\u201d of Jerez\u2019s Holy Week. This entity in the San Mateo neighborhood made public the details of the two most important events in its programming: the\u00a0<i>Exaltaci\u00f3n de la saeta<\/i>\u00a0(\u201c<i>Saeta<\/i>\u2019s Exaltation\u201d) and the\u00a0<i>Saetas<\/i>\u00a0National Contest.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>Exaltaci\u00f3n<\/i>, in its 30th year, will be performed by Zurita Mart\u00edn, Eldest Brother of the Desconsuelo brotherhood. This brotherhood is historically associated to the\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Buena Gente<\/i>\u00a0on account of being located in the same neighborhood, and that\u2019s why its Eldest Brother is entrusted with telling about the feelings and memories that the\u00a0<i>saeta<\/i>\u00a0has created through his whole life. Paco Zurita, son of the renowned Santiago Zurita, will be introduced by Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1o Rubiales and the event will have the participation of the\u00a0<i>saeteros<\/i>\u00a0Macarena de Jerez, \u00c1ngel Vargas, Jos\u00e9 de Cantarote and Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez, as well as the Municipal Band of Music. The\u00a0<i>Exaltaci\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0will take place the evening of March 9, at 9 PM in the San Mateo church.<\/p>\n<p>The other event presented was the\u00a0<i>Saetas<\/i>\u00a0National Contest (<i>Concurso Nacional de saeta<\/i>s), now in it\u2019s 40th edition and held in honor of the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0Curro de la Morena, a distinguished reference for this style. This is an event which every year has had an increasing number of contestants, and for this reason the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0wished to \u201cincrease the budget allocation\u201d for its prizes, thus this year the total amount of prizes awarded surpasses the previous edition by 5,000 euros, totalling 10,900 euros overall. The First Prize will be awarded 2,500 euros, the second prize 1,500 euros, there will be six secondary prizes of 900 euros and one special prize \u201cManuel Torre\u201d of 600 euros. This last prize may or may not be awarded. One novelty this year worth mentioning is the fact that all the contest\u2019s winners will sing from a city balcony during the Holy Week during the procession of the brotherhoods Desconsuelo, Buena Muerte, Tres Ca\u00eddas, Soledad, Defensi\u00f3n and Mayor Dolor. The contest will take place in two stages: semifinals, and final. The semifinals will be held at the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u2019s venue, in the\u00a0<i>Nave del Aceite<\/i>\u00a0building, on March 10 (Saturday) and March 16 (Friday), and the final will take place on Saturday, March 24, in the\u00a0<i>Sala Compa\u00f1\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0venue.<\/p>\n<p><i><small>By Juan Garrido<\/small><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
