We have come to the San Miguel neighborhood of Jerez heeding the call of a courageous man devoted to adding to his already-great legacy. Carlos Mart\u00edn Ballester, collector for over 20 years, focused his latest work on Manuel Torres, who for many aficionados is the greatest flamenco genius of all time. The book-CD launch party took place in this venerable\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0of C\u00e1diz province,\u00a0<i>Los Cern\u00edcalos<\/i>, where we were welcomed by Antonio Ben\u00edtez, the honorary president of this entity established over eighty years ago. This goes to illustrate the relevance of the stories kept by the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1istas<\/i>of the neighborhood where Manuel Soto Loreto, a.k.a. Manuel Torres, was born on December 5, 1878. He was also known as \u201c<i>Ni\u00f1o de Jerez<\/i>\u201d and defined as the \u201ccelebrated performer of\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>and superb creator of the most difficult style of\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u201d by the aficionados who in November 1959, with the help of Jerez\u2019s Town Council, erected a memorial plaque in the house where he was born on \u00c1lamos street (incidentally, the plaque ha since been removed, with unknown destination).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t crazy, not at all. It\u2019s about time to stand up for Manuel Torres, who created a style for performing\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, which is something exceptional\u201d, stated the journalist and writer Jos\u00e9 Manuel Gamboa, who contributed to this book. In the presentation event we could also listen to the perspectives on this publication (and on the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0who is its subject matter) by\u00a0<i>Los Caminos del cante<\/i>\u2019s Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Casta\u00f1o, the Culture Delegate of Jerez\u2019s Town Council, Francisco Camas, and a representative of the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0who made the initial greeting. Plus, of course, by Carlos Mart\u00edn Ballester, the creator of this book-CD.<\/p>\n<p>Among the public there were artists of the stature of Fernando de la Morena, Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez, Antonio Reyes, Macarena de Jerez, Ni\u00f1o de la Fragua, Momo Moneo, Melchora Ortega, Ana Mar\u00eda L\u00f3pez, Manuela Carpio, Salmonete, Alfonso &#8216;El Mijita&#8217;, Antonio Puerto and a multitude of aficionados who didn\u2019t want to miss this event.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos made special emphasis about the importance of the recordings gathered in this publication, \u201cbecause to be able to study them, they must have sufficient quality so we can verify the highly refined technique of Manuel\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u201d, in order to disprove some myths about this artist from Jerez who \u201cwas conscious about his talent, using it whenever he wanted to\u201d. He also wanted to acknowledge the \u201ccrisis of today\u2019s flamenco aficionados\u201d, stating that one of the goals of this publication was to \u201callow young people to know, as they deserve, one of the most important\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in flamenco history\u201d. In that regard, he continued: \u201cfor me, it was essential to continue the collection with Manuel Torres, after seeing how well-received the first volume about Don Antonio Chac\u00f3n was. They are the two faces of flamenco, the two faces of Jerez\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, two streams full of emotion. In one hand, we have the musical abilities of Chac\u00f3n, and on the other the secret of the expression and voice that Manuel had\u201d. This second volume in the\u00a0<i>Colecci\u00f3n Carlos Mart\u00edn Ballester<\/i>analyses \u201call the trajectory of his life, music and discography\u201d, with the collaboration of reputed specialists and including anecdotes such as the\u00a0<i>mano-a-mano<\/i>\u00a0with Manuel Vallejo at the Alc\u00e1zar de Jerez (which in those days was the\u00a0<i>Teatro Eslava<\/i>), and also includes two CDs featuring all known Torres\u2019 recordings, that is, 49\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, originally available in 78 rpm records, reproduced with \u201cextraordinary fidelity\u201d. In this presentation, which took place in Jerez on April 7, we could listen to some of the recordings\u00a0<i>in situ<\/i>, such as the\u00a0<i>seguiriya de Santiago y Santa Ana<\/i>, which prompted a member of the public say \u201cTo do that, three different singers would be needed!\u201d. Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Casta\u00f1o also announced that this year\u2019s University of C\u00e1diz\u2019s study conference sessions will be devoted to the guitarist Javier Molina, who accompanied Manuel Torres in two\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0and two\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0featured in the recordings.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the presentation we had the privilege to listen to Luis Moneo\u2019s\u00a0<i>cantes por sole\u00e1, seguiriya<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>, joined by the guitar of Domingo Rubichi. There were moments of deep flamenco feel with a knowledgeable public which connected with the performers from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p><i>Juan Garrido<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img
