Death appeared in the life of Juan Manuel Carpio Heredia (1979-2018) one morning in August. I was still counting the views of his latest video of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0in the social networks, where he performed together with his brother Israel in the tribute to Manuel Moneo, in the\u00a0<i>Fiesta de la Buler\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0which just ended. Two days after that display of art, which his followers had become accustomed to, the telephone relayed the tragic news: \u201cJuanillorro has died\u201d. Like a bucket of cold water, like being stepped upon by a giant, like a slap on the face\u2026 that\u2019s how the never-expected headline hit us.<\/p>\n<p>This Gypsy man, from the Carpio and Heredia families, is from Jerez\u2019s La Plazuela district, which he always stood up for, because that\u2019s where he lived, constantly paying tribute to the\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0of T\u00edo Chalao or Domingo Rubichi. Yet, he never avoided the styles of T\u00edo Borrico or Enrique\u00a0<i>El Extreme\u00f1o<\/i>, each unique in their own way, or the peculiar and charismatic Antonio Malena, always admired for his way of singing for Jerez\u2019s\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>. However, the one he really admired was Juan Moneo\u00a0<i>El Torta<\/i>, from whom he borrowed gestures,\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, and even expressions on stage.<\/p>\n<p>He started performing on stages very young, as flamenco existed in his home in a natural way and he often watched his father accompany his cousin Manuela Carpio (who is now devastated) to the festivals when she was in her prime, at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. He inherited his dad\u2019s way of dancing (and his build), admired by the public who watched enthralled as he stitched one step after another with an extraordinary, uncommon rhythm, and I\u2019m not exaggerating. That early popularity in parties and family gatherings prompted him to debut at the\u00a0<i>Tertulia Flamenca Pepe Alconchel<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0of his hometown, when he was just 17 years old, excelling in the\u00a0<i>cantes a comp\u00e1s<\/i>, such as\u00a0<i>alegr\u00edas, tangos<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>. At about that same time, he became a regular at the\u00a0<i>tablao \u201cLagar de T\u00edo Parrilla\u201d<\/i>, and later at \u201c<i>Taberna Flamenca de Santiago<\/i>\u201d or \u201c<i>Tablao Bereber<\/i>\u201d, and more recently at \u201c<i>Puro Arte<\/i>\u201d, without forgetting his long stint at Seville\u2019s \u201c<i>El Arenal<\/i>\u201d or Barcelona\u2019s \u201c<i>Cordob\u00e9s<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What is clear about this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0is that he had been one of the most active of the last few years, rarely having the opportunity to perform as a soloist, but always making the best of any performing opportunity available. He was a regular in the\u00a0<i>zambomba<\/i>\u00a0ensembles, in the most\u00a0<i>flamenco<\/i>\u00a0tents in the various fairs of Andalusia, in\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>tabancos<\/i>, and was also a member of the group\u00a0<i>Sabor Jerez<\/i>, successfully led by the guitarist Fernando Moreno in the early 2000s\u2026 He was always in high demand by his colleagues due to his deep personality. He was part of Mar\u00eda del Mar Moreno\u2019s company,\u00a0<i>Jerez Puro<\/i>, a was a regular\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0for other\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0of his generation, such as Juan Antonio Tejero, Gema Moneo, Saray Garc\u00eda, Fernando Jim\u00e9nez and Miguel \u00c1ngel Heredia, a close friend who would have witnessed how Juanillorro left us when he was in his house, at 12:30 on Tuesday the 28th.<\/p>\n<p>One of his celebrated performances was in 2010, in the production\u00a0<i>Cien A\u00f1os de T\u00edo Borrico<\/i>, which took place at the Villamarta theater, where he shared the lineup with Capullo de Jerez and T\u00eda Juana la del Pipa. Two years earlier, in 2008, the CD\u00a0<i>Nueva Frontera del Cante de Jerez<\/i>\u00a0was released, where he took part singing\u00a0<i>por tangos del Borrico<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>buler\u00edas<\/i>, together with other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0from Jerez of his same generation. He used to travel to Japan often, more than ten times in his life, and he had dear memories of a particular trip with Diego Rubichi and his family. In 2016 he released his CD \u201c<i>Plazuela Viva<\/i>\u201d, with 12 tracks of good\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, visiting the classic\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>:\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1, taranto, canti\u00f1as, martinete, fandangos, seguiriyas, buler\u00edas<\/i>\u2026 It was presented at Seville\u2019s Quintero theater, in the Bienal\u2019s \u201coff\u201d festival, having sold out the event and being joined by Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez, Juan Jos\u00e9 Amador, Enrique\u00a0<i>El Extreme\u00f1o<\/i>, Manuela Carpio, Juan Antonio Tejero, Mara Rey, Juan Manuel Moneo, Miguel Salado\u2026<\/p>\n<p>This summer he had performed in the\u00a0<i>Viernes Flamencos<\/i>\u00a0series organized by his\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>, \u201c<i>La Buler\u00eda<\/i>\u201d, his most intimate and familiar corner, his second home, and also the one organized by\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0\u201c<i>Fernando Terremoto<\/i>\u201d, as well as in the\u00a0<i>Fiesta de la Buler\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0festival last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>My friend Manuel, my dear Juanillorro: I give you a kiss among tears, may Christ,\u00a0<i>Cristo de la Expiraci\u00f3n<\/i>, and the Virgin Mary,\u00a0<i>la flamenca del manto rojo<\/i>, be with you always.
