We could say, widening the scope, that the same is true in the rest of Adalusia. Yet, if you allow me to say so, the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0of Jerez are special in one regard: they are non-profit entities, to the point that all recitals performed can be attended by visitors for free, with the costs covered by the members who generously open the doors of their venues to promote flamenco culture. Don\u2019t get the wrong the impression that this only happens in the city of T\u00edo Pepe, though, as other renowned\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0also do this, such as the\u00a0<i>Sociedad del Cante Grande de Algeciras<\/i>, for example. Yet, it\u2019s true that it has become increasingly common to see the word \u201c<i>donativo<\/i>\u201d in the recital\u2019s promotional posters, indicating admittance by donation, typically a token amount to help covering the costs of the event<\/p>\n<p>The operation of these entities which have been such an intrinsic part of flamenco for half a century is crucial to the city\u2019s flamenco scene.\u00a0<i>Los Cern\u00edcalos<\/i>\u00a0was the first\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0to open in Jerez, following the steps of\u00a0<i>La Plater\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0in Granada or\u00a0<i>Juan Breva<\/i>\u00a0in M\u00e1laga. Then came\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a La Buler\u00eda<\/i>,\u00a0<i>El Garbanzo<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Buena Gente<\/i>,\u00a0<i>T\u00edo Jos\u00e9 de Paula<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Los Cabales<\/i>\u00a0(now vanished),\u00a0<i>Los Juncales<\/i>\u00a0(on Nueva street, about to be demolished due to dereliction),\u00a0<i>Chac\u00f3n<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Terremoto<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Pescaero<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Alconchel<\/i>&#8230; Nowadays there are more than fifteen\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0in Jerez, most of them belonging to the\u00a0<i>Federaci\u00f3n Local de Pe\u00f1as<\/i>. They are active during the Christmas season, organizing the traditional\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>, during Holy Week, with the performance of\u00a0<i>saetas<\/i>, during Jerez\u2019s fair, in its tents at the Real (much sought-after by the tourists), and in summertime, tanking part in the\u00a0<i>Viernes Flamencos<\/i>\u00a0events and other local festivals. Yet, above all we must highlight their commitment to live performances (\u201clive\u201d indeed). Recitals in\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0are special, filled with magic and meaning, inviting the public to retreat into the real deal, without scripts or distracting light shows. Autumn, particularly in October and November, has become an important season of activities for those cultural associations with so much history.<\/p>\n<p>The official programs of events of two\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0have already been made public, and they are such good programs! It\u2019s no wonder that the aficionados who come to Jerez from elsewhere are amazed to see so many first-class artists in the promotional posters. Let\u2019s go in order. First, the\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a T\u00edo Jos\u00e9 de Paula<\/i>\u00a0celebrates, starting on Saturday, October 6, the 34th edition of\u00a0<i>Oto\u00f1o Flamenco<\/i>\u00a0(\u201cFlamenco Autunm\u201d), featuring artists such as Rancapino Chico (whose performances in theaters cost 15 or 20 euros), Manuel de la Fragua, a young cantaor from the house of T\u00edo Juane, Antonio Malena, a leading expert in\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>, and In\u00e9s Bac\u00e1n, the matriarch of Lebrija\u2019s cante. Four Saturdays in October with open doors in the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u2019s venue on Merced street, in the heart of the Santiago district. In November, this\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0continues its it\u2019s courses of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0with lectures about Juaniqu\u00ed\u2019s\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>, by Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Casta\u00f1o and\u00a0<i>Los Caminos del Cante<\/i>, T\u00eda Anica la Peri\u00f1aca\u2019s\u00a0<i>seguiriya<\/i>, by Estela Zatania, and Jos\u00e9 Cepero\u2019s\u00a0<i>fandangos<\/i>, by Antonio Conde Gonz\u00e1lez-Carrascosa.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0with a strong program is\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Buena Gente<\/i>. It has presented a first-rate series, starting last Saturday with Vicente Soto and Nono Jero, something we must highlight since the son of Sordera, although born and raised in Jerez, seldom performs in his hometown. The series continues with other artists such as Juan Villar and Periqu\u00edn &#8216;Ni\u00f1o Jero&#8217;, Esperanza Fern\u00e1ndez and Miguel \u00c1ngel Cort\u00e9s, Jos\u00e9 Valencia and Juan Requena, Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez with Diego del Morao and Gema Moneo, Ezequiel Ben\u00edtez and Paco Le\u00f3n, and Macarena de Jerez with Diego del Morao. This is a lineup more suitable for the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Sevilla<\/i>\u00a0than a humble\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0of Jerez which, as stated above, opens its doors to all aficionados. This makes us think about the impact of the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0in the local tourism and the economy of Jerez. We can\u2019t help asking ourselves, is the city aware of the importance of its\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/i>? Is the local government aware of it, too?<\/p>\n<p>The lineup of the November program of the\u00a0<i>Asociaci\u00f3n Cultural Flamenca Fernando Terremoto<\/i>\u00a0hasn\u2019t been finalized yet, but can name some names such as Jos\u00e9 Carpio &#8216;Mijita&#8217; and Ana de los Reyes. Then there\u2019s next year program of\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a La Buler\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0on occasion of the 26th\u00a0<i>Exaltaci\u00f3n de La Buler\u00eda<\/i>\u00a0festival, the program of the\u00a0<i>Centro Cultural Flamenco Don Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0with its recital just before Christmas, the program of the\u00a0<i>Pe\u00f1a Los Cern\u00edcalos<\/i>, on the 50th anniversary of its foundation, and the programs of all other\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>. Then there are the programs in the local theaters\u2026 So, isn\u2019t it time to enforce admittance by donation to be able to cover the costs, just like happens in other parts of Andalusia? Isn\u2019t it better to instill the habit of paying in advance, particularly when it comes to art, than getting used to free stuff which implies a lacks of value? It\u2019s a topic for debate in the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0of Jerez, and it must be discussed.
