After the great success of the first edition of the\u00a0Festival Flamenco Mediterr\u00e1neo de Alicante<\/i>, the organizers have wanted to keep alive what originally was an idea by a handful aficionados in the city. The commitment of\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Caja Mediterr\u00e1neo<\/i>\u00a0to back a high-level programming featuring great contemporary artists, promoting once again\u00a0comp\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0in eastern Spain, is truly praiseworthy. While last year this festival featured names like the well-known guitarist Dani de Mor\u00f3n, as well as Jes\u00fas Guerrero, and the\u00a0bailaores<\/i>\u00a0Jes\u00fas Carmona and Fernando Jim\u00e9nez, among others, this year\u2019s edition continues to bet on quality, above all.<\/p>\n

This is a festival that not only features performances, but also has a great program of master classes, following the example of other leading festivals such as the one in Jerez, which is kept alive by students who come to learn different styles of\u00a0baile<\/i>, always keeping the rhythm with\u00a0cante<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0baile<\/i>. Besides, two renowned documentaries will be screened, featuring two iconic artists, La Paquera de Jerez and La Chana. The former will be screened on Monday, November 5, with the title \u201cPor Oriente sale el sol: La Paquera de Jerez en Tokio<\/i>\u201d, by Fernando Gonz\u00e1lez Caballos, and the following Monday will feature one of the most charismatic\u00a0bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0from Catalunya, Antonia Santiago Amador ‘La Chana’, directed by por Lucija Stojevic.<\/p>\n

The first gala is scheduled for the evening of\u00a0November 2<\/b>, with\u00a0La Lupi<\/b>\u2019s show \u201cRETOrno\u201d. The challenge (\u201creto<\/i>\u201d) is to put together many years of work, looking into the past, remembering the\u00a0baile<\/i>\u00a0of the old days, the\u00a0baile<\/i>\u00a0of the tenement yards and emulating them\u00a0por tangos<\/i>, evoking the mastery of good traditional flamenco with\u00a0bata de cola<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0mant\u00f3n<\/i>, honoring the\u00a0baile<\/i>\u00a0of\u00a0sombrero cordob\u00e9s<\/i>, without forgetting her many years of work, and always maintaining the \u201cless is more\u201d mantra. The following day, La Lupi will give a course\u00a0por tangos<\/i>.<\/p>\n

November 9<\/b>\u00a0with be the turn of\u00a0Ballet Flamenco de Andaluc\u00eda<\/b>\u00a0which has been, through its 23 years, a quarry for great talent, producing artists who have later become renowned\u00a0bailaores<\/i>. From Israel Galv\u00e1n, Mercedes Ruiz or Juan Jos\u00e9 Ja\u00e9n \u201cEl Junco\u201d, among many others, this institutional company has been a good school where\u00a0bailaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0have the opportunity to learn from the great masters. This teaching approach has been reinforced in this new period of its history, as the project chosen for this stage, led by Rafael Est\u00e9vez, has turned the Ballet Flamenco de Andaluc\u00eda into a kind of artistic agora, where the dance troupe finds a place to express and develop its creative concerns. The following day, Saturday\u00a0November 10<\/b>, the stage will belong to the dance schools of\u00a0Pastora S\u00e1nchez<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Fefa G\u00f3mez<\/b>, two of the most popular teachers in Alicante.<\/p>\n

‘Mujeres en el Flamenco<\/b>‘ is the name of the production that the group\u00a0Jerez Flamenco Internacional<\/i>\u00a0will bring to Alicante the evening of\u00a0November 16<\/b>. Leading artists in women\u2019s\u00a0cante<\/i>\u00a0such as T\u00eda Juana la del Pipa, Lela Soto, Gema ‘la Cantarota’ and Tomasa Pe\u00f1a will evoke, each in their own way, legendary artists of this genre such as La Paquera de Jerez, Perla de C\u00e1diz and the sisters Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera. In\u00a0baile<\/i>, Carmen Herrera will evoke\u00a0bailaoras<\/i>\u00a0who have also made history, such as Matilde Coral and Angelita G\u00f3mez. Pepe del Morao, grandson of Manuel, will accompany all of them at the guitar, as his grandfather once did. The following day Carmen Herrera will offer a master class\u00a0por tientos<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Arc\u00e1ngel<\/b>, born in Huelva in 1977, has been a leading flamenco artist practically since he became a professional\u00a0cantaor<\/i>\u00a0when he was 15 years old. This\u00a0cantaor<\/i>\u00a0will be the protagonist on the evening of Friday,\u00a0November 23<\/b>. His echo and his concept of\u00a0cante flamenco<\/i>\u00a0coexist in natural harmony with a deep knowledge and respect for the roots of\u00a0arte jondo<\/i>, having a boundless interest in finding new inroads in the development of flamenco art: it\u2019s in this delicate and beautiful line (often mentioned but seldom heard or even sensed) that separates tradition and modernity where this\u00a0cantaor<\/i>\u00a0from Huelva conceives his art. In the morning of the following day, Saturday November 24, the teaching will be done by Patricia Guerrero,\u00a0bailaora<\/i>\u00a0from Granada,\u00a0por alegr\u00edas<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Finally, closing the lineup on\u00a0November 30<\/b>, Jerez is back once again with its traditional\u00a0zambomba<\/i>, one of the most typical popular events in that city.\u00a0Zambomba Jerezana<\/b>: Around a bonfire, in a tenement\u2019s yard, sharing the few things people have: sweets, wine\u2026 That\u2019s the atmosphere of the authentic\u00a0zambomba de Jerez<\/i>, one of the most cherished traditions of that city in C\u00e1diz province. The celebration of the birth of Baby Jesus (\u201cNi\u00f1o Dios\u201d) is at the core of the festivities, and that\u2019s the topic of the many verses and\u00a0villancicos<\/i>\u00a0that echo in all corners as a symbol of the celebrations. For some time, Jerez has become an epicenter of Christmas musical culture, being a tourist attraction for thousands of people eager to witness first-hand that coexistence that still exists in its original form. Eva Rubichi, Coral de los Reyes, Jos\u00e9 Mijita, Ana de los Reyes, Joaqu\u00edn ‘El Zambo’ and Domingo Rubichi will add\u00a0comp\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0to the Christmas spirit. The following day, Fernando Jim\u00e9nez, also a member of the zambomba troupe, will offer a master class por buler\u00edas, closing the festival.<\/p>\n
