{"id":6087,"date":"2018-11-02T12:05:40","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T12:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/arsenal-beat-by-bayern-and-loses-the-tournament\/"},"modified":"2019-02-13T21:44:58","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T20:44:58","slug":"after-remembering-the-dead-come-the-non-zambombas-of-jerez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/articles\/after-remembering-the-dead-come-the-non-zambombas-of-jerez\/","title":{"rendered":"After remembering the dead, come the \u201cnon-zambombas\u201d of Jerez"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Traditionally, the\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0in Jerez were never celebrated before the Immaculate Conception or Constitution holidays (December 6 \u2013 8th). Around those dates, the\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as flamencas<\/i>, religious brotherhoods, neighbor associations and other organizations typically associated with Christmas celebrations in this land, such as the\u00a0<i>Asociaci\u00f3n de Belenistas<\/i>, organized choirs around bonfires with the intent of remembering and singing the ages-old\u00a0<i>coplas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>romances<\/i>\u00a0that have always been sung in the Christmas season in a spirit of brotherhood. For most people, sharing a good time of laughter and fellowship around the sounds of\u00a0<i>villancicos<\/i>\u00a0was the main reason to go back in time and relive that yearned childhood which brought so many good memories. At the same time, we have to say it, each of these events was an opportunity for those organizations to collect funds to help balancing former and future budgets, considering that admittance to their events was for a token price. As recently as the 1990s (so, not from as far back as half a century ago)\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0were seldom public and were primarily family affairs.\u00a0<i>Zambombas<\/i>\u00a0were never meant to be performed for financial gain. That is, until now. It\u2019s not that I\u2019ve become a radical or that this is apocalyptic, but the fact is that since a few years ago the demand for\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0has far outstripped the offer, resulting in a free-for-all where everything goes. We can already see posters in bars and nightclubs advertising \u201cTraditional\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0of Jerez\u201d which are not even from Jerez and are as traditional as plastic tambourines\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Actually, no. Not everything goes. It\u2019s rather shocking that nowadays\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0start being celebrated as early as November 16, while traditionally November was a sacred month of remembrance for those who had passed away. It\u2019s true that we shouldn\u2019t necessarily have to wait until December 5 to celebrate\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>, but at least we could wait until the last hours of November.<\/p>\n<p>All of this may seem silly and unimportant, but traditions exist for a reason, and if the basic elements of a tradition are removed, they become pointless. It\u2019s not just\u00a0<i>when<\/i>\u00a0we celebrate, but\u00a0<i>how<\/i>. In many cases the\u00a0<i>zambombas<\/i>\u00a0themselves (the percussion instruments these celebrations are named after) don\u2019t even feature, the traditional\u00a0<i>almirez<\/i>\u00a0and anise are kept on the bar shelves just as decorative elements, no one uses a spoon and a bottle as a musical instrument anymore, and not even the organizers know the lyrics of those old\u00a0<i>romances<\/i>\u00a0that are meant to be remembered. It\u2019s just an ensemble of five people with microphones, drinks for five euros and cha-ching. No one seems to care about the things that really matter.<\/p>\n<p>What happens with this celebration of Jerez is the same that happens with flamenco: there is a constant need to point out what is and what isn\u2019t, and to use the right terminology when speaking about it. Wouldn\u2019t it be easier to change the name of the product, instead of selling a fake one? They could call it \u201cChristmas Performance\u201d instead of \u201c<i>zambomba<\/i>\u201d, and that would do. This matters, because a lot of tourists come seeking something authentic and they end up greatly disappointed. Additionally, the young people of Jerez are mostly unaware of the greatness of their culture, and with the exception of two or three well-known\u00a0<i>villancicos<\/i>\u00a0(such as\u00a0<i>Calle de San Francisco<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Los caminos se hicieron<\/i>\u00a0and some other) don\u2019t participate unless the ancient\u00a0<i>romance<\/i>\u00a0being performed has been remixed by someone of their generation in the last few years, so it\u2019s a modern creation (by the great Antonio Gallardo, Parrilla de Jerez and Terremoto).<\/p>\n<p>Not all is lost, though.
