This may seem obvious, but some people haven\u2019t figured this out, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m writing this article. When a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0transcends time and makes history, it\u2019s for a reason. Silverio was certainly a great\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but we can be sure there were better\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0than him. Yet, it was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0who made history and dozens and dozens of\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of his time didn\u2019t. It the case of Silverio, what made the difference was not just his talent as\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, but also the fact that he was a businessman and entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, Juan Junquera, from Jerez de la Frontera, also became a businessman, following the steps of Silverio, yet he\u2019s not as renowned. Indeed, very little is known about him, even in Jerez, where he was born. People have written about him and about the fact that he was involved in the\u00a0<i>caf\u00e9 cantante <\/i>business, but they don\u2019t know exactly who he was. No one knows if he was from the Santiago or the San Miguel neighborhood, or in which year was he born, or where he lived, or when he died.<\/p>\n<p>A while ago, I was able to figure out who was Juan Junquera, although I\u2019ll leave the details for later. I also found out about his sister Tomasa, also a\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0and likewise involved in the <em>caf\u00e9 cantante<\/em> business, same as him. Quite a trailblazer: Gypsy, artist and businesswoman, in the 19th century.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/1\/31\/%C2%BFQu%C3%A9-pas%C3%B3-con-Dem%C3%B3filo\">Dem\u00f3filo<\/a>\u00a0missed this fact, because if he had known about it, he would have put her down like he did with Silverio, for daring to take\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0outside of the Gypsy home and making a public spectacle of it, which wasn\u2019t true anyway, because the\u00a0<i>cante<\/i> of Andalusia was being performed in theatres before Silverio was born, and Gypsies were already being paid to perform.<\/p>\n<p>It was Juanelo de Jerez who asked Dem\u00f3filo to stop criticizing the Junquera brothers, because his family was related to them. Juanelo was Silverio\u2019s advisor when it came to Gypsy stuff, in case you don\u2019t know this. Yet, it was Silverio who got all the criticism, perhaps because his surname was Franconetti and not Vargas or Salguero. That\u00a0<i>gach\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0(non-Gypsy) with the big feet, as he was called by an old Gypsy woman in C\u00e1diz who was trying to find something wrong with him, when she listened to him singing after he came back from South America in 1864. Incidentally, that Gypsy woman wasn\u2019t Mar\u00eda Borrico, as some people have said, because Mar\u00eda was the same age as Silverio, and that happened when Silverio was 33 years old.<\/p>\n<p>From Silverio to our days there have been many\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0who have made flamenco history:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/blog-archivo\/aquel-genial-nino-de-torres\">Manuel Torres<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>\u00a0and a long litany. Who will make history in our days?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\">La Paquera<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>\u2026? We know that already, personal tastes aside. What we don\u2019t know is who among today\u2019s young artists are capable to make history.<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell, although I don\u2019t see any 30 or 40-year old artist with the necessary ability to leave their imprint in flamenco history. There are many good singers, there\u2019s no denying, but there\u2019s no one able to contribute great things and become great stars so they\u2019ll define our days and be remembered for posterity. I know that it\u2019s increasingly difficult to be original and to create new things, but there are too many imitators in the new generation of flamenco stars.<\/p>\n<p>This topic came up one night in a conversation with Valderrama and Enrique Morente, in the house of the master from Granada, and both agreed that flamenco history was only made by those who contribute new things or do something extraordinary with the legacy of the old masters. We\u2019ll have to wait and see, of course.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
