That\u2019s not my case at all. When I worked in radio broadcasting, in the 1980s, I was first criticized for being too conservative and intolerant of innovation. Then, as I started playing records of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/01\/17\/Gerardo-N%C3%BA%C3%B1ez\">Gerardo N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/a>\u00a0(his most commercial and catchy tunes), it was the total opposite. Die-hard purists would mumble \u201cThis guy will screw up\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When we talk about \u201ctraditional flamenco\u201d, what are we talking about, exactly? What is \u201ctraditional flamenco\u201d and to which period does it belong? Flamenco wasn\u2019t born overnight during a party, but it surely came into being as the result of a centuries-long process. It appears as such, evolved with well-defined\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>, in the mid 1800s. I say \u201cevolved\u201d and not \u201cin evolution\u201d. That is, as a finished art form, although with its last layer of varnish still fresh. Who can possibly believe that a traditional Gypsy seguiriya or a classic\u00a0<i>ca\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0would have been invented by one genius in one inspired evening?<\/p>\n<p>Every genius and innovator has been criticized at the beginning of their careers. That\u2019s natural, due to the jealously of the so-called purists or\u00a0<i>cabales<\/i>, who fear the disappearance of the traditional\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0brought by the pioneers.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>, Morente and Camar\u00f3n were all very controversial artists among the aficionados. Are Chac\u00f3n\u2019s\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0classic pieces with a great artistic and cultural value? Sure they are, as classic and as of much value as any piece by Turina, Falla or T\u00e1rrega. Yet, Chac\u00f3n was heavily criticized for singing those \u201clittle malague\u00f1as\u201d in the caf\u00e9s of Seville.<\/p>\n<p>Some people still believe that a\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1a<\/i>\u00a0or a\u00a0<i>fandango<\/i>\u00a0are \u201cless flamenco\u201d than a\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0or a\u00a0<i>tango<\/i>. Who made that decision, which lead to Lorca and Falla to categorize the\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>\u00a0according to their worth in the Granada contest of 1922? In Granada and in other contests that followed. Still in our days, there are contests which give better prizes to bad\u00a0<i>seguiriyas<\/i>\u00a0than to good\u00a0<i>malague\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>tarantas<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional or classic flamenco, that is, the one that has survived against all odds, is essential for the big national and international festivals, because they project this art the world over, and the whole world wants traditional flamenco. Those who come every year to the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Sevilla<\/i>\u00a0or to the Festival de Jerez don\u2019t come to be tricked or fooled with experiments that are forgotten three days after their debut. They come essentially to experience traditional flamenco, because they don\u2019t have it in their countries. Yet, they are offered fusion, contemporary dance and all sorts of weird things, but very little authentic flamenco, if at all.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Sevilla<\/i>\u00a0or in any other flamenco festival in the world there is room for all the trends and types of flamenco, and it has always been this way. I remember having seen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/03\/14\/Lole-y-Manuel\">Lole and Manuel<\/a>\u00a0in the traditional flamenco summer festivals in the towns of Andalusia, sharing lineups with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fosforito\/c112t\/5674793c0cf203da56e4658c\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/04\/20\/Honores-a-Menese-en-Guadalajara\">Menese<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\">La Paquera<\/a>. Yet, I also remember when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pepa-Montes\/c112t\/5750ec860cf245cf719deb1a\">Pepa Montes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Ricardo-Mi%C3%B1o\/c112t\/578c426e0cf26df1ae592aa5\">Ricardo Mi\u00f1o<\/a>\u00a0would be banned from performing in festivals because they included a caja in their ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>What I think is essential in festivals such as the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>Las Minas<\/i>\u00a0is that they are well organized. Regarding the festival of Seville, the so-called \u201cfestival of festivals\u201d, I have to say that its last editions have been a disaster, like a big gazpacho where anything was thrown in. In a festival of such category and repercussion the world over, there can\u2019t be any doubt if it features flamenco or not. Only flamenco must be featured, otherwise they would be ripping off the aficionados who come from so far away.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s flamenco doesn\u2019t have to be like that of the 1800s, or 1960s, or 1970s. There is a type of flamenco unique to our days, and we can\u2019t ignore it. Thus, to conclude, the secret is programming with talent, without sidelining the flamenco of the old days (which has become classic for a reason) and also including the new trends that come up. Flamenco must evolve, but with talent and without the fakeness of\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>. It\u2019s like preserving La Giralda while building the new Torre Pelli, if you know what I mean.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
