I wanted to be a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and I gave it a try until I realized this was not my calling. I didn\u2019t like the stages, and I still don\u2019t, although in my youth I sang several times on stage, and I\u2019ve been talking about flamenco on stages for over forty years, which is something I don\u2019t like either, but I had to overcome my shyness to be able to make a living. Having to sing at a scheduled time, for different kinds of public, in all sorts of stages, is something that I consider quite difficult. Professional\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0must do this on a daily basis, whether they feel at ease or not, whether they like the public or not. That\u2019s professionalism.<\/p>\n<p>I mention this topic today because I notice the amount of festival performances by artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Jes\u00fas M\u00e9ndez<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jes%C3%BAs-M%C3%A9ndez\/c112t\/55f77c2d0cf2db6dcfb5d9c8\">Antonio Reyes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Rancapino-Chico-y-Paco-Cepero\/c112t\/55f77d1d0cf2db6dcfb5da89\">Rancapino chico<\/a>, perhaps the busiest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0year-round. I wonder how they are able to be always in a good mood, singing with duende, at ease and focused. One day I asked\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0about this, and he answered: \u201cPlaying the record\u201d. That coming from a genius who was a true\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, visceral, one of those who would get his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0from the deepest reaches of his blood. It was like a miracle, seeing how he would sometimes sing without any strength left, not feeling well, or even sick, and even so being able to communicate the deepest of emotions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0had a friend a La Alameda de H\u00e9rcules in Seville, called Fernando el de las Losas, who would spend a lot of money listening to him sing in private. This man would sometimes call Tom\u00e1s for him to sing in the terrace of his house on Feria street, yet Tom\u00e1s not always obliged. \u201cI\u2019m not feeling well today, Fernando\u201d, he would tell him sometimes. Eventually they agreed that Tom\u00e1s would only sing when he felt like it, and not always for money. That\u2019s how this Gypsy genius was able to make a living for years, particularly during the 1936 Spanish Civil War, when his sister\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora<\/a>\u00a0and his brother-in-law\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sevilla-se-olvid%C3%B3-de-Pepe-Pinto\/c112t\/56a8644c0cf2296307164596\">Pepe Pinto<\/a>\u00a0moved to the Spanish capital and he had a very hard time in Seville.<\/p>\n<p>The last time I saw\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0singing on stage, he was at the edge of it, looking sickly, pale, almost gaunt, and I asked him if he was ill. \u201cNo, it\u2019s all the responsibility\u201d, he answered me. \u201cLook, I\u2019ve been performing for years, but a stage is a scary beast\u201d, he said. Then, he sang in a way I can\u2019t quite describe here, very professionally and, oddly, with duende. He closed his eyes, found strength, and soon was at ease performing before more than a thousand people who, to be sure, were there because they adored the master from Mairena del Alcor, and their timely \u201cOl\u00e9s\u201d helped him forget his anxiety and his fear to disappoint them.<\/p>\n<p>Although I don\u2019t sing, I do write, and I have to admit that sometimes it\u2019s hard for me to finish an article. I write more than forty articles each month, which is too much. That\u2019s why I greatly esteem the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>cantaoras<\/i>\u00a0who are able to sing one day in Algeciras and the next in N\u00eemes, for different types of public, and sometimes on unsuitable stages. Whether they have enough repertoire for all these performances is another story, but we can leave that topic for another day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
