The trouble is that nowadays everyone and their dog wants to be a flamenco concert guitarists, as if it were that easy. I\u2019m sorry for being so blunt, but that\u2019s not possible. Everyone has the right to record a solo album, either paid by themselves or by others, but claiming to be a concert guitarist is something else. With flamenco guitarists it often happens the same as with the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who sing for\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>, who one day decide to become solo singers, yet they fail to take\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0off their heads.<\/p>\n<p>All great flamenco guitarists, without exception, started as accompanists. Before Paco el Barbero began to perform in concerts in Spain, having already a flamenco repertoire, he poured his heart and soul accompanying\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio Franconetti<\/a>\u00a0all over the country. It was this master who brought Paco to Seville at the end of the 1870s, where he setup an academy and owned a\u00a0<i>tabanco flamenco<\/i>\u00a0in the Plata street, in downtown Seville, the same street where Manuel de la Barrera and his follower La Campanera had their bolero academy.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it\u2019s not correct to credit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/05\/09\/Ni%C3%B1o-Miguel\">Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/a>\u00a0with having laid the foundation of Seville\u2019s flamenco guitar school, as it often happens, because that school got started much earlier, even before Ricardo was born, at the time when guitarists such as Maestro P\u00e9rez, Pepe Robles, Baldomero Ojeda, Antonio Moreno and Antonio P\u00e9rez\u00a0<i>hijo<\/i>\u00a0were active, not forgetting guitarists who came from elsewhere in Andalusia such as Barbero himself, Juan Gandulla Habichuela, Javier Molina and Antonio Sol.<\/p>\n<p>One of the best guitarists of Seville was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Guitarra-Flamenca-de-Pepe-Mart%C3%ADnez\/c112t\/57327dac0cf2e405158b7656\">Pepe Mart\u00ednez<\/a>, from La Macarena, a follower of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ram%C3%B3n-Montoya\/c112t\/5695df660cf263fc5a881f60\">Ram\u00f3n Montoya<\/a>, who was barely able to perform as a concert guitarist in his hometown, having to travel to London every year to perform in concerts. He has been completely forgotten in Seville and beyond, although he was one of the great guitarists in flamenco history, having accompanied\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Pastora Pav\u00f3n<\/a>, to name just two of the greatest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0he performed with.<\/p>\n<p>In our days, there are lots of young guitarists who aspire to become concert guitarists, having barely ever played as accompanists.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/a>\u00a0once complained publicly about this. Paco himself was a concert guitarist who struggled to take\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0off his head, and I know I\u2019ll probably be crucified for saying this. The last time I watched him perform in Seville, at the\u00a0<i>Bienal<\/i>, he spent twenty minutes playing for Carpeta, and that\u2019s the model of flamenco concert followed by his disciples,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Tomatito\/c112t\/5695871e0cf21038318e2d08\">Tomatito<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Vicente-Amigo\/c112t\/569587c40cf20ee37c7115e6\">Vicente Amigo<\/a>among them: they typically play two or three solo pieces and then they wear their fingers off playing for the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaores<\/i>\u00a0of the\u00a0<i>cuadro<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I miss the concert guitarists of the old days, those who came to Seville to perform true concerts of flamenco guitar, such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/12\/29\/Victor-Monje-Serranito\">Serranito<\/a>, to name one example. Not to mention\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Mario-Escudero-Buler%C3%ADas\/c112t\/5695856e0cf20ee37c711246\">Mario Escudero<\/a>. They delighted us with flamenco music and didn\u2019t come to play some rowdy entertainment, as it happens in our days, the exception being the master\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/20\/Rafael-Riqueni\">Rafae Riqueni<\/a>, who is a true flamenco concert guitar player, because he\u2019s a prodigy of technique and creativity, since he was a kid, when his guitar sounded like that of Pepe Mart\u00ednez and had the splendour of Ricardo or Montoya.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d love if today\u2019s young flamenco guitarists brought back those concerts where the guitar was the true protagonist, and not just an ornament for\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>,\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>,\u00a0<i>cajas<\/i>, flutes or other instruments. Among us, there are truly great guitarists, yet concert guitar players, I\u2019m sorry to say, there are very few, even if they perform in theatres.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
