{"id":5980,"date":"2017-06-16T15:57:21","date_gmt":"2017-06-16T15:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/no-son-ya-demasiados-genios\/"},"modified":"2019-03-01T00:20:57","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T23:20:57","slug":"too-many-flamenco-geniuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/too-many-flamenco-geniuses\/","title":{"rendered":"Too many flamenco geniuses?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think I\u2019ve read almost everything that has been written in newspapers about flamenco and its artists, and I don\u2019t recall the word \u201cgenius\u201d being used so lightly as it has ben done in the last few years. I admit that occasionally I myself have done the same thing, describing as \u201cgenius\u201d some moment of brilliance by an artist, one detail in a particular performance, sometimes carried away by the emotion of a sense-muddling magical moment. Yet, is it possible to be a genius for just three seconds? I don\u2019t remember who said that a genius is like a lighting whose thunder can be heard for centuries, but I think that describes very well my own concept of \u201cgenius\u201d: a genius lives forever.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0were two geniuses of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, because we couldn\u2019t conceive flamenco without them, not only in their own time, but in ours too.<\/p>\n<p>When people ask me why is that Chac\u00f3n was so important in flamenco\u2019s history, I tell them to listen, not just Chac\u00f3n\u2019s recordings, but also his contemporaries\u2019. This will show the huge difference that Chac\u00f3n made when it comes to the development of singing technique, vocalization, rhythm, tuning and sound. That\u2019s why this master of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>has transcended so strongly, even as his recordings had been forgotten for years, until Jos\u00e9 Blas Vega and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Enrique Morente<\/a>\u00a0brought them back to light, one by writing and the other by singing. It\u2019s true that artists such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cuarenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Pastora\/c112t\/565548780cf2a1cf6d1811d5\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juanito-Mojama-%C2%BFredescubriendo-a-un-genio\/c112t\/5600abed0cf25fa7fe12dd39\">Juan Mojama<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\">Vallejo<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Pepe-de-la-Matrona\/c112t\/55f753be0cf20cc524a8f1fd\">Matrona<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Valderrama<\/a>\u00a0and others never forgot Chac\u00f3n, yet Blas Vega and Morente were crucial to rediscover this historical personality of\u00a0<i>cante jondo<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>It took me a while to get hold of records by Chac\u00f3n in the hands of collectors (slate records, that is), yet I finally succeeded, in the 1970s, and I couldn\u2019t understand why there was so much bad press against him, as he was blamed of \u201csoftening\u201d\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and of popularizing the\u00a0<i>\u00f3pera flamenca<\/i>, which actually was a period when Chac\u00f3n had barely any influence, because he died in 1929 and the\u00a0<i>\u00f3pera flamenca<\/i>\u00a0movement only started three or four years earlier. At the time when I became interested in flamenco, there were\u00a0<i>palmeros<\/i>who were more widely known than Chac\u00f3n, and I hope that I don\u2019t offend anyone saying this, because the are truly brilliant\u00a0<i>palmeros<\/i>\u00a0out there, particularly in Jerez de la Frontera.<\/p>\n<p>When geniuses make an impact in any genre, they change everything. That\u2019s what Chac\u00f3n, Manuel Torres, Ni\u00f1a de los Peines, Marchena and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Caracol<\/a>\u00a0did (to name just a few).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ram%C3%B3n-Montoya\/c112t\/5695df660cf263fc5a881f60\">Ram\u00f3n Montoya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Ni%C3%B1o-Ricardo\/c112t\/569584120cf2e099256bbfdd\">Ni\u00f1o Ricardo<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Sabicas-Recital-de-Guitarra-Flamenca\/c112t\/55f748230cf24af6ea3c1d07\">Sabicas<\/a>\u00a0revolutionized flamenco guitar way before\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Paco-de-Lucia-Light-and-Shade\/c112t\/55f74ed90cf20cc524a8ee8e\">Paco de Luc\u00eda<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-soledad-de-Manolo-Sanl%C3%BAcar\/c112t\/566a47510cf2391068765f14\">Manolo Sanl\u00facar<\/a>, and\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0was forever changed by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%A1Carmen-La-Capitana\/c112t\/55f749310cf23d0ff003f44d\">Carmen Amaya<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-El-Bailar%C3%ADn\/c112t\/569858ac0cf2e94e3fb86c0f\">Antonio Ruiz Soler<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Farruco\/c112t\/566e47370cf2bbe8cab82498\">Antonio el Farruco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Siete-a%C3%B1os-sin-Mario-Maya\/c112t\/5604c1250cf2375d99dbfea0\">Mario Maya<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuela-Carrasco\/c112t\/569858210cf2e94e3fb86b22\">Manuela Carrasco<\/a>. I know that there are many more, but we can\u2019t go on and on. Even so, I\u2019m sure that the readers will start giving out names, and some of these will rise a few eyebrows. That\u2019s my point.<\/p>\n<p>It has become fashionable in the world of flamenco to call \u201cgenius\u201d any artist who dies young, particularly if they were eccentric, anarchic, misunderstood or callous. We\u2019re unable to conceive as \u201cgenius\u201d someone with great talent who leads a normal life. We expect geniuses to be lunatic and crazy, oblivious to material necessities and unbound by social clich\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Many years from now, when academics research the flamenco archives of our days, they\u2019ll be shocked to find out how many \u201cgeniuses\u201d we had. Flamencologists will wonder what happened in this period. Well, nothing happened, in particular. Geniuses are unpredictable like that, there may be none for centuries, and then lots of them suddenly show up, which is what has been happening for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>Aren\u2019t there enough geniuses, already?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
