There are many ways to become a star, such as, for example, winning a renowned flamenco contest. I\u2019ve read and heard people say that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2016\/1\/19\/Calixto-S%C3%A1nchez-y-Eduardo-Rebollar\">Calixto S\u00e1nchez<\/a>,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>from Mairena del Alcor, became a star of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0just because he won the 1st\u00a0<i>Giraldillo<\/i>\u00a0award, in 1980, although in fact he was a well-established artist by then, having already released one album and won several other contests of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. Fourteen years before winning that important award at the\u00a0<i>Bienal de Flamenco<\/i>, he was already featured in posters rubbing shoulders with other flamenco stars of that time, the mid 1960s. Would he ever had become a big star in flamenco if he hadn\u2019t won that\u00a0<i>Giraldillo<\/i>\u00a0(incidentally, a contest which he entered by chance, after\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-y-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-El-Lebrijano\/c112t\/578855aa0cf28653c964403e\">Lebrijano<\/a>\u00a0quit)? We\u2019ll never know.<\/p>\n<p>Another example would be the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFEs-Miguel-Poveda-un-cantaor-discutido\/c112t\/56aaefe60cf205a1e853fbda\">Miguel Poveda<\/a>, one of today\u2019s flamenco stars. He was just 20 years old when he won the\u00a0<i>L\u00e1mpara Minera de La Uni\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0award, plus other prizes in that contest, when he was a total unknown outside of his hometown. The echo of his achievements in the media made him an overnight star, and we\u2019ll never know how he would have managed without that huge bang. He would go to show that those prizes were well-deserved, because he is still very much active and enjoying great success, regardless of personal tastes, although he had ups and downs after he won the\u00a0<i>La Uni\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0award. I remember that he even complained at one point that people didn\u2019t value his worth, and that\u2019s when he moved to Seville, a decision that changed everything and allowed him to become the uncontested star he is today.<\/p>\n<p>If we go back in time, to the 1920s, we could mention\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manolo-Caracol\/c112t\/5670b1be0cf274f69813e76e\">Manolo Caracol<\/a>\u2019s success in the 1922\u00a0<i>Concurso de Cante Jondo de Granada<\/i>, when he was a 12 year old kid who (as he himself said) had never sang in public, not even at home for his family, a family of\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0was the one who listened to him singing in the room of an hotel in Seville, and he didn\u2019t think twice: he took him to the Granada contest and that\u2019s where his career was born. The master from Jerez got it right (as well as the other members of the jury), because Caracol would become one of the greatest geniuses in the history of\u00a0<i>cante flamenco<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>\u00a0was already a renowned\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0when he was awarded the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!%C2%BFVuelve-lo-de-la-Llave-del-Cante\/c112t\/563987c60cf275e9c596a72e\">Key of Cante<\/a>\u00a0in C\u00f3rdoba, in 1962. Yet, the day after he received that award he went from being a well-known\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0to becoming \u201cthe number one\u201d in the eyes of many, even of those who at first doubted he had what it took to become a star. At the time, he wasn\u2019t even highly regarded in his own hometown, Mairena del Alcor. I know that some people won\u2019t like to hear this, but it\u2019s something that old, living veteran aficionados from that town have confirmed. As soon as he was awarded the Key, he became an idol in Mairena and beyond, although he was already a good\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0with a long career, who also had to contend with many other bright stars of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0of his time.<\/p>\n<p>There are also odd cases, such as that of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\">Juan Valderrama<\/a>: when he was almost a teenager, he took part in a singing contest organized by a record label. There were ten other contestants, and he was the only one rejected, as the organizers thought he wasn\u2019t worth it and had no future as a singer. Yet, not only he succeeded in becoming a flamenco star, but nothing was ever heard about the other nine contestants. Thus, this is the opposite of the previous examples.<\/p>\n<p>So, many things are at play, for an artist to become a leading star in\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>,\u00a0<i>toque<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>. Of course, if someone is no good, then it\u2019s hopeless. There are also great\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who never become stars, despite being highly talented. There are other artists who only become famous after their death, having experienced no success in their lifetime and being discovered later on. Perhaps, some of those that are not highly regarded by today\u2019s aficionados and the critics will be admired fifty years from now, when new aficionados and critics analyse their records and discover in them something we missed.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s a good topic for today\u2019s discussion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
