{"id":5940,"date":"2017-02-13T16:26:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T16:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/antonio-el-arenero-el-eco-alfarero\/"},"modified":"2019-03-26T22:00:23","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T21:00:23","slug":"antonio-el-arenero-the-potters-eco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/antonio-el-arenero-the-potters-eco\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonio El Arenero: the potter&#8217;s eco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been researching the\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and performers of Triana for half my life and I\u2019ve been very lucky to have met many of the good artists of that renowned district of Seville, where I lived for almost eight years, in the Voluntad neighborhood to be specific. Yet, before living there, I used to work there too, since I was 13 years old, first at Antonio Tocino\u2019s painting workshop on Constancia street, and sometime later at \u00c1ngel Sierra\u2019s tailor shop, on Trabajo street. I even married a woman from Triana, in 1986, at the Marineros Chapel, no less.<\/p>\n<p>One the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0I was best acquainted with was Antonio Gonz\u00e1lez Garz\u00f3n,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-El-Arenero\/c112t\/56f46dae0cf213d90db526d7\">El Arenero<\/a><\/em>, whom I consider to be one of the best performers of the\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0de El Zurraque, that is, the\u00a0<i>soleares alfareras<\/i>\u00a0(potter\u2019s soleares). I won\u2019t say he was the most versatile in that style, but he had a very peculiar voice and unique fortitude. Those\u00a0<i>soleares<\/i>\u00a0are meant to be sang rather slowly, and performing them doesn\u2019t require an outstanding skill. Indeed, many\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0tried to include them in their repertoires and record them for their albums, failing miserably (no need to say names).<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, it was the mythical\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-m%C3%A9dico-del-cante-jondo\/c112t\/56fb55960cf20a08ed0b1678\">Ram\u00f3n El Ollero<\/a>, born on Procurador street in Triana, the first one to excel in these soleares. Ram\u00f3n had an encyclopedic knowledge about all sorts of\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>\u00a0of his time (the late 1800s), but his main imprint was left of the\u00a0<i>soleares alfareras<\/i>. El Arenero was born twenty years after El Ollero\u2019s death in Seville, in 1905, so he never had the opportunity to listen to him. He would learn about this\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>from the oldest\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0in the district, instead. Antonio himself told me one afternoon in a bar of Triana that there were \u201cmany made-up stories about Ram\u00f3n\u201d, because many people who had never heard him sing would talk about him.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, Antonio was a late professional, his true occupation being\u00a0<i>arenero<\/i>\u00a0(sand dredger), the origin of his stage name. Antonio would tell me that when he was a kid, back then in the 1930s,\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0was something learned in taverns and in gatherings of aficionados, and that he always heard good things about El Ollero, particularly from the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/02\/09\/Emilio-Abad%C3%Ada\">Emilio Abad\u00eda<\/a>\u00a0(also from Triana), who could have never heard Rodr\u00edguez Vargas (El Ollero) either. Emilio was born in 1903, so he learned about Ram\u00f3n\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0from other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0of his time and from old aficionados, such as Garfias, for example, the\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and watchman of Castilla street.<\/p>\n<p>What is certain is that El Arenero would have been able to listen to good performers of that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, such as the above-mentioned Abad\u00eda,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Manuel-Oliver-Oliver-de-Triana\/c112t\/56f46cc90cf225c3be4b50c1\">Manolo Oliver<\/a>, El Sordillo and Domingo el Alfarero, who although not as outstanding as Ram\u00f3n, were his disciples. I heard Antonio El Arenero perform in gatherings of aficionados (such as those held in the house of Triana\u2019s dentist Paco Parejo, on Alfarer\u00eda street), and also on stages too, although at the time he was elderly and his voice was worn-out, because he was an inveterate smoker. This dwindling of skills forced him to sing in a quiet voice, with some incredible low notes and a bullfighter\u2019s measured focus. He had a wonderful vocalization and the tune of his\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1<\/i>\u00a0was perfect, even as his\u00a0<i>comp\u00e1s<\/i>wasn\u2019t the best.<\/p>\n<p>He performed until 2004, the year when he died, after he became one of the main references for Triana\u2019s\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, a role model for other\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-nueva-ilusi%C3%B3n-de-Chiquetete\/c112t\/564558210cf21009be84d126\">Chiquetete<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Sole%C3%A1-de-Zurraque\/c112t\/56f471840cf213d90db52898\">Paco Taranto<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/articulos-archivo\/entrevista-a-marquez-el-zapatero-el-decano-del-cante\">M\u00e1rquez el Zapatero<\/a>, among others. Few\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0who became professional at such an old age achieved such fame, particularly in Triana. El Arenero is today renowned for his\u00a0<i>cante por sole\u00e1<\/i>, although he also sang\u00a0<i>por seguiriyas<\/i>, managing to master\u00a0<i>A un toro de plaza<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0of La Josefa. Yet, we aficionados will always remember him for his sweet, sober and deep\u00a0<i>soleares alfareras<\/i>, and for these lyrics that he sang often:<\/p>\n<p><i>Sordo como una tapia<br \/>\ny ciego de nacimiento.<br \/>\nM\u00e1s val\u00eda que mi mare<br \/>\nme hubiera par\u00edo muerto.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Deaf like a stone<br \/>\nAnd blind from birth<br \/>\nI\u2019d rather my mother<br \/>\nHave me born dead<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don Antonio was quite a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, and quite a character. A first-class entertainer and, above all, a loyal friend.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
