{"id":5916,"date":"2016-10-31T16:42:46","date_gmt":"2016-10-31T16:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/uncategorized\/el-mitico-ramon-sartorio\/"},"modified":"2019-04-10T22:18:11","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T20:18:11","slug":"the-mythical-ramon-sartorio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/en\/blog-archivo\/the-mythical-ramon-sartorio\/","title":{"rendered":"The mythical Ram\u00f3n Sartorio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several years ago, I became interested in a\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>bailaor<\/i>from San Fernando (C\u00e1diz), Ram\u00f3n Sartorio, who used to show up in the newspapers of Seville next to such names as Jos\u00e9 Lorente, Enrique Prado, Jos\u00e9 Perea, Juraco and Cuervo Sanluque\u00f1o, who usually sang in recitals for the master\u00a0<i>bolero<\/i>dancers in that city, either in theatres or in dance halls. They are among the first professionals of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0that show up in Seville\u2019s press, and none of them was Gypsy (not that this really matters, but it\u2019s kind of intriguing). We can call them \u201cprofessionals\u201d because they performed in lots of recitals, and three of them (Sartorio himself, Jos\u00e9 Perea \u2013 from Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda \u2013 and Cuervo Sanluque\u00f1o) left their hometowns to settle in Seville to make a living out of their art, although they might have combined\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>baile<\/i>\u00a0with some other occupation, because in the middle of the 19th century very few people could make a living exclusively from flamenco.<\/p>\n<p>Ram\u00f3n Sartorio,\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0and bailaor from San Fernando de la Isla, shows up as a \u201cday laborer\u201d (\u201c<i>jornalero<\/i>\u201d) in a census record, yet in a city record from 1870 his occupation is listed as \u201c<i>bolero<\/i>\u201d. At that time, he lived at Las Palmas street, number 135, in the San Lorenzo parish, so he was a neighbor of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/56aee4800cf2683289312b98\">Dem\u00f3filo<\/a>. He was already living in Seville in 1857, when his daughter Teresa was born. She was baptized in the Santa Catalina parish that same year, and her mother was Josefa Luengo (from Seville). Yet, Josefa\u2019s relationship with Ram\u00f3n didn\u2019t last, because years later he shows up living with Amalia Alcoba Bejarano (also from Seville), with whom he had another daughter. When Sartorio passed away on the 21st of November of 1870, at that same address on Las Palmas street, Amalia shows up as his wife. The artist\u2019s age at his death was stated as 50 years old, thus he would have been born in 1820. His full name was Ram\u00f3n Sartorio Gonz\u00e1lez, son of Rafael and Francisca, both also from San Fernando, the birthplace of flamenco artists such as El Fillo and his brothers Curro Pabla and Juan Encueros, and also the birthplace of the no less famous Mar\u00eda Borrico, who also performed in Seville, where she reportedly bettered no other than Silverio himself.<\/p>\n<p>Was Ram\u00f3n Sartorio a flamenco\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>, or was he just a\u00a0<i>bolero<\/i>\u00a0dancer who happened to sing? Regardless, the fact is that he was very popular in Seville, being part of that great wave of migrants from C\u00e1diz into Andalusia\u2019s capital, an essential migration in the formation of the so-called \u201cSeville school\u201d of flamenco, which was greatly enriched by the influence of C\u00e1diz, Jerez de la Frontera, San Fernando, Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda, Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda and Puerto Real. I\u2019m publishing here for the first time this information about Ram\u00f3n Sartorio, with the promise of completing his biography on a later date, so he can be taken out of oblivion, and hoping that he\u2019ll be remembered in his hometown, if one day someone decides to write about the flamenco history of San Fernando de la Isla, the cradle of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/single-post\/2017\/06\/18\/%E2%80%8B-Un-cuarto-de-siglo-sin-Camar%C3%B3n\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and of many other important flamenco artists.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know how Sartorio sang, but it must have been quite something, because he performed regularly in the theaters and dance halls of Seville and he lived in that city for at least twenty years, perhaps much longer. He was buried in Seville, just like so many others who came to leave their legacy and essence in one of main cradles of flamenco, one of the many cradles, among several others.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translated by P.
