I know it\u2019s a touchy subject, so let\u2019s not say \u201cdrunk\u201d, rather \u201ca little tipsy\u201d. I have a good collection of recordings of flamenco festivals from the 1960s and 1970s, without a doubt the best years of the town\u2019s festivals, in places such as\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-d%C3%ADa-de-lujo-en-Utrera\/c112t\/56e62cfa0cf27db4b02abf17\">Utrera<\/a>, Mor\u00f3n, Lebrija, Alcal\u00e1 de Guada\u00edra, Mairena del Alcor, La Puebla de Cazalla and Ceuta. In those two decades there were both established flamenco artists such as\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\">Mairena<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Juan-Talega-y-Diego-del-Gastor\/c112t\/56ef6b400cf276e9de24fd1a\">Juan Talega<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Perrate-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7c600cf29064e5f24d50\">Perrate<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\">Fernanda<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Bernarda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56cf7eca0cf2f9aefdc453ee\">Bernarda de Utrera<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Honores-a-Don-Antonio-Fosforito\/c112t\/571d84e50cf26b6d68419e56\">Fosforito<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Terremoto-de-Jerez\/c112t\/569c5f4c0cf224d46570178e\">Terremoto<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Maria-Vargas\/c112t\/56b269570cf2b4e0b61861af\">Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Joselero-de-Mor%C3%B3n\/c112t\/5750eeb70cf231679147ff6b\">Joselero de Mor\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\">La Paquera<\/a>\u00a0and also young up-and-coming stars such as\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Grandpa-and-Juan-Pe%C3%B1a-%E2%80%9CEl-Lebrijano%E2%80%9D\/c112t\/578861310cf28653c96446aa\">Lebrijano<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Jos%C3%A9-Menese-y-Enrique-de-Melchor\/c112t\/571706bd0cf28d4bbf4e66d2\">Menese<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Un-dolor-llamado-Morente\/c112t\/5665034b0cf203d325ed5a96\">Morente<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Camar%C3%B3n-de-la-Isla\/c112t\/5670af830cf2fb0fe5aff7eb\">Camar\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In those days, most radio stations would record the festivals and broadcast them at a later date, while some stations would make live broadcasts. Sometimes I listen to those recordings and I have a lot of fun, because there were some memorable evenings in those years. I have all the recordings of the Ceuta festivals, where Paco Vallecillo ruled and where Antonio Mairena, the foremost star of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>\u00a0at the time, performed every year. In one of those recordings, the announcer, probably wasted, bestowed unending praises upon the\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>, in the excitement of the live broadcasting, declaring that\u00a0<i>duendes<\/i>\u00a0had appeared and that it was not humanely possible to sing any better than what was being sang that night in Ceuta.<\/p>\n<p>Listening to those old and priceless tapes, I understand how the announcer felt, intoxicated by the wonderful atmosphere and by Sanl\u00facar\u2019s cider, but the truth is that everyone was singing horribly, out of tune, off-beat, giving loads of\u00a0<i>ojana<\/i>. Drunk as a skunk. Smashed like that, trust me, it\u2019s not possible to sing well, even if the singer feels completely at ease and believing to be surpassing\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Silverio-y-la-desmemoriada-Sevilla\/c112t\/5626e3090cf2c6c64380ea3b\">Silverio<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Antonio-Chac%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56771a790cf28854b38dc92e\">Chac\u00f3n<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Aquel-genial-Ni%C3%B1o-de-Torres\/c112t\/5785bdb80cf2e25833791608\">Manuel Torres<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-abuelo-recuerda-a-Tom%C3%A1s-Pav%C3%B3n\/c112t\/56ef66b60cf276e9de24fb4d\">Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perrate de Utrera told me several times that when he was called to perform in private parties, the\u00a0<i>se\u00f1oritos<\/i>would get him drunk so he could drink at ease, with\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>, forgetting about everything else so he could completely focus on his\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. There is a well-known story that Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca told about\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Forty-six-years-without-Pastora\/c112t\/56554a2b0cf20a760c4c9583\">Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>\u00a0in a party in C\u00e1diz, where, reportedly, she didn\u2019t quite feel at ease. According to the poet, Pastora then took a glass of Cazalla moonshine and drank it all in one sitting. After that, Federico said that she sang as if she were on fire, with her\u00a0<i>duende<\/i>\u00a0alive in her throat. Yet, according to Pastora\u2019s daughter, Tolita, who was a good friend of mine, Federico made up that story, because Pastora never drank moonshine, and she didn\u2019t use to drink alcohol. Perhaps it was Lorca who was at ease, and because he was a writing genius, he made up that wonderful story for posterity.<\/p>\n<p>Pastora\u2019s brother, Tom\u00e1s Pav\u00f3n, recorded his best albums when he only drank milk, as attested by\u00a0<i>cantes<\/i>such as Cagancho\u2019s\u00a0<i>seguiriya \u201cEl Reniego\u201d<\/i>\u00a0and Diego el Lebrijano\u2019s\u00a0<i>debla trianera<\/i>. Thus, a lot has been written about this, about the supposed need for\u00a0<i>cantaores<\/i>\u00a0to drink alcohol to sing with\u00a0<i>duende y pellizco<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In one occasion,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!So%C3%B1ando-con-El-Chocolate\/c112t\/567771680cf203da56e68612\">Chocolate<\/a>\u00a0was scheduled to sing in the town of Herrera, in the province of Seville, near Puente Genil. I was that night with him and we drank a whole bottle of \u201cScotland\u2019s water\u201d, with no ice, in plastic cups. His wife,\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!El-grito-de-Rosa-Montoya\/c112t\/56b186300cf2683289365685\">Rosa Montoya<\/a>, keep telling him to stop, warning that we would end up wasted, but don Antonio was in a drinking mood that night. When he got up on stage, helped by the guitarist\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.expoflamenco.net\/#!Gaspar-de-Utrera\/c112t\/56e6209c0cf201bfd277ec0a\">Antonio Carri\u00f3n<\/a>, he had forgotten all the lyrics, and his guitarist had to write them down for him. The master certainly sang \u201cat ease\u201d, but without any control of his technique, not knowing what he was doing and having memory problems. Whoever thinks that it\u2019s better to sing drunk, is delusional.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">Translate by P.
