Flamenco artists have been, and still are, like special members of my family. I don\u2019t think this happens in other music genres, such as opera or jazz. Flamencos are closer, perhaps humbler, I don\u2019t really know. I treated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!El-a%C3%B1o-de-Juan-Valderrama\/c112t\/560dd5620cf2a7bb74c22e90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Valderrama<\/a>\u00a0as if he were my father or my older brother. Same with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Hablando-de-cante-con-Mairena\/c112t\/5760d1d50cf29542aa289730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Mairena<\/a>. I remember when Ni\u00f1o de Frenegal was in his deathbed. I called him, and he asked me to interview him. I made the interview as he lied on his bed, in his house, and he died a few days later. There was a mutual love and trust.<\/p>\n<p><b>-What are your memories of\u00a0<a>Antonio El Sevillano?<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Those are unforgettable memories. I admired him so much that we became friends and I interviewed him one evening, in a radio show, for two hours. I think that was in 1986, when his health was worsening. He had an incredible sense of humor, and a huge zest for life. He loved women, and his lyrics (most of which he wrote himself), expressed that passion.\u00a0<i>Porque el lujo te gustaba\u2026<\/i><small>(1)<\/small>\u00a0He had such speed in his throat, it was almost impossible to imitate him. He had two or three fandangos, created by him, which were incredibly difficult to sing. That\u2019s the trademark that immortalized him.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Isn\u2019t this\u00a0<i>cantaor<\/i>\u00a0almost forgotten?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Totally. Oh, well. He made his career, left a good discography and a unique style.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Is there any\u00a0<i>cantaora<\/i>\u00a0you miss, grandpa?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Lots. I can\u2019t say that I was a close friend of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Ni%C3%B1a-de-la-Puebla\/c112t\/57799c3e0cf2119db9c8edb4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ni\u00f1a de la Puebla<\/a>, but I met her many times and I admired her cante and her very positive attitude in life<small>(2)<\/small>. What a great personality that woman had, and she could sing lots of different\u00a0<i>palos<\/i>, although she was pigeonholed as a singer of\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>milongas<\/i>. One evening I listened to her singing\u00a0<i>por seguiriyas<\/i>, at the\u00a0<i>Reuni\u00f3n de Cante Jondo<\/i>\u00a0in her hometown, Puebla de Cazalla, and I was very impressed. Her voice wasn\u2019t quite suited for that\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>, yet she knew her trade and that night she moved thousands of people to tears. She\u2019s another one who has been greatly forgotten. I also miss\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!La-Paquera-de-Jerez\/c112t\/55f74acd0cf2de902a86840d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Paquera<\/a>\u00a0a lot, she was a genius of\u00a0<i>cante<\/i>. There won\u2019t be anyone like her in a thousand years, if at all. I greatly miss\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Fernanda-de-Utrera\/c112t\/55f752d80cf20cc524a8f191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fernanda de Utrera<\/a>, too. I really loved her. No one has ever sung\u00a0<i>sole\u00e1s<\/i>\u00a0with such depth,\u00a0<i>enjundia<\/i>\u00a0and Gypsy feel.<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; Not even\u00a0<a>Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-They were totally different, and from different periods, too. They can\u2019t be compared. Fernanda had an incredible depth,\u00a0<i>jondura<\/i>, yet Pastora was more musical, even as she was quite good in that\u00a0<i>palo<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>-These days was the 24th anniversary of\u00a0<a>Pulp\u00f3n<\/a>, the artist\u2019s agent. Did you deal with him a lot, grandpa?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-A lot. He was a man with an incredible capacity for work, a tireless workaholic. He has great merit for straightening the careers of many stars who originally weren\u2019t professional artists, and that&#8217;s not easy. He became very powerful in the flamenco world. He also helped many artists when they had financial troubles. Naturally, he wasn\u2019t perfect, yet I miss him because he was polite and kind with the good aficionados and with the critics. It\u2019s not fair that Seville, in particular, had forgotten him so miserably. I hope he\u2019ll be remembered on the 25th anniversary of his death.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Are you nostalgic, grandpa?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Yes, I feel great nostalgia for those years. Those were great days. I mean the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, particularly. If you attended a flamenco festival, you\u2019d meet a dozen great stars. The\u00a0<i>pe\u00f1as<\/i>\u00a0had another feel, everything was more humane, pure. I don\u2019t know, it was a special time. It surely gets embellished with the passing of time. I remember that in those years, the older aficionados missed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Aquel-jilguero-de-Marchena\/c112t\/5661105c0cf25333685e0a03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marchena<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expoflamenco.com\/archivo\/#!Cincuenta-y-seis-a%C3%B1os-sin-Vallejo\/c112t\/57a7f29a0cf2fdb0f74c5fa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vallejo<\/a>\u00a0and Ni\u00f1a de los Peines.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Everyone prizes their own time, don\u2019t they?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Exactly, Manolito.<\/p>\n<p><b>-How will you spend Christmas?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-I\u2019ll get myself disconnected from most things. All I yearn for is quiet, peace and good chat, nothing more. To have a drink with friends, to share with family\u2026 The typical things of the season.<\/p>\n<p><b>-Listening to flamenco?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>-Actually, I\u2019ll be reading. I\u2019ve bought a few books and I\u2019ll read a lot. I also like\u00a0<i>villancicos<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>campanilleros<\/i>.
